Today’s songs from a Mythological film ‘Gaj Gauri’ (1958). The cast of this film consisted of Sulochana (Latkar), Ratnamala, Shahu Modak, Anant Kumar, Nana Palshikar and a host of mostly Marathi artistes plus an elephant named Ram Prasad.
When the talkie films era came to India, the early filmmakers tended to make films on folk tales and mythological stories in the first decade, i.e. 1931 to 1940. In the second decade of 1941 to 1950 many religious films were made. Some of them like ‘Ram Rajya’ (1943) being an all India blockbuster. And the third decade from 1951 to 1960 achieved the peak for mythological films made, worth calling it ‘The Golden Period of Religious films’. As many as 124 such films were made in this decade. From 1961 to 1970 and 1971 to 1980 were ok, but 1980 onwards there was a decline in such films and mythological films became scarce except some dubbed films from the South, where such films are made even today regularly. The television became a competition to this as many dharmik serials were shown on TV.

The film was made by National Studios, Bombay, which started after the closure of Sagar Movietone. Automatically, all the artists under contract with Sagar were transferred to National Studios. The film was directed by Ramchandra Thakur and the music was by Anil Biswas (7 songs) and Ashok Ghosh (5 songs). Lyrics were by Dr. Safdar ‘ Aah ‘ Sitapuri and Pt. Indra.

Today’s song is from a social film ‘Rangeeli’ of 1952.
1952 was a year which was going through a lean period for Hindi films. Increased costs of film production, escalating rates of stars and music directors, establishment of star system in place of earlier studio system, increasing taxes, decreasing number of cinema halls etc caused a worry in the film industry. Financiers with black money were making films – in 1952 the number of Hindi films made went up to 105 from 97 of 1951, but dropped again to 98 in 1953. Most films were of lower quality. Because of superior music there were some great films too, but the situation was grave nevertheless.

Today’s song is from a comedy film ‘Halla Gulla’ (1954).
It was produced by Master Bhagwan for his own banner Bhagwan Art productions, Bombay. It was directed by Bhagwan himself and the music was by Nisar Bazmi. The story was by Devendra Mukherjee, screenplay by Vyankatesh Madgulkar and the dialogues were by Ehsan Rizvi. The cast included Shakeela, Sajjan, Bhagwan, Leela Gupte, Leela Gandhi, Baburao Pehalwan, Yeshvant Dave and many regular artists of Bhagwan team.

Today’s song is from the social film ‘Dhobi Doctor’ (1954).
The film was made by Ranjit Movietone, Bombay. It was directed by Phani Mujumdar (husband of actress Monica Desai, the younger sister of actress Leela Desai), and the music was by Khayyam. This was his 4th film (3rd independent film) after he took the name Khayyam. Earlier he was using the pseudonym of Sharma ji. He gave music independently as Sharma ji in two films = ‘Parda’ and ‘Parivartan’ (in 1949) and working as part of the team Verma ji-Sharma ji, for 1 film – ‘Heer Ranjha’ in 1948.
[Editor Note : The full name of Verma ji of this duo is Rehman Verma. He worked as MD in Bombay till 1947, and then migrated to Pakistan when partition happened. As per Geet Kosh his name appears only in one film, ‘Heer Ranjha’ of 1948, as part of the duo Verma ji-Sharma Ji.]

The film was made by Dogra films, Bombay, a banner owned by the producer of this film CR Dogra. The film was directed by Balwant Bhatt, elder brother of another director Nanabhai Bhatt. Music was by Nisar Bazmi who migrated to Pakistan and became a big name there. The cast of the film was Shammi, Mahipal, Satish, Kammo, Rajan Kapoor, Omkar Devaskar, Helen (Richardson), Rajni and many others.

The film was made by Homi Wadia’s Basant Pictures, Bombay. It was directed by the B and C grade film specialist Nanubhai Bhatt. Music was by another specialist SN Tripathi. Lyricists were BD Mishra and Ramesh Pandey. The cast of the film included Meena Kumari, Mahipal, SN Tripathi, Dalpat, Urmila, BM Vyas, Sulochana, Vasant Rao Pehalwan and many others.
