I made a quick call to Atulji to confirm that this movie has not yet made its debut. I was making sure that it doesn’t appear under any other spelling. Heard this song today in the noon program of Vividh Bharati -Desh Ki Surili Dhadkan (the channel’s tagline). And immediately recalled a 2001 release which featured the off-springs of the actors from the above song. ‘Farz’ from which today’s trigger happened is 54 years old, the off-springs of the actors are themselves 44 and 40..everything seems like yesterday but all things that I mentioned are decently in the PAST. Even a movie that released in 2001 is 20 years old, ooh!!!

“Main Khiladi Tu Anari” (1994) was a normal masala- action- emotion- comedy filled movie. It was directed by Sameer Malkan, produced by Champak Jain for Venus Records and Tapes. Dialogues were by Kadar Khan, story by Sachin Bhowmick, lyricists were Anwar Sagar, Maya Govind, Rahat Indori, Rani Malik, Zameer Kazmi and Hasrat Jaipuri. Anu Malik was the music director. It had Shilpa Shetty (in a double role) with Akshay Kumar, Saif Ali Khan, Raageshwari, Shakti Kapoor, Beena, Mukesh Khanna, Shiva, Johnny Lever, and Kadar Khan in the cast. The movie was largely borrowed from the 1991 Hollywood movie ‘The Hard Way’ and some reviews of MKTA said (and I quote) ‘it was a notch above the original because of the presence of one of India’s biggest action stars, martial artist Akshay Kumar’; comparing his martial arts skills to Jean-Claude Van Damme and also praising his stunt work, and concluding that it “is a fun action-comedy” film. It was the second release in 1994 of the Akshay Kumar- Saif Ali Khan duo, the other one being ‘Yeh Dillagi’. It was also Akshay Kumar’s fourth success for 1994 others being ‘Mohra’, ‘Suhaag’ and ‘Elaan’ (all of them being multi-hero movies).

The song with this post was suitable for 19th August. 19th was the remembrance day of Khayyam the music composer who began his journey in Bollywood in 1947, when he sang a song with Zohrabai Ambalewali. His first as a music director was in 1948 as ‘Sharmaji’ of the ‘Sharmaji-Varmaji’ composer Duo. The statistics page of the blog says that Khayyam saab has given music to 377 songs in 42 movies. That may seem too little when compared with music directors who were active during that period; but each song of his were ‘pure pleasure on the ears’. Songs like ‘shaam-e-gham ki kasam’ (1953) or ‘tum apna ranj-o-gham’ (1964) are still popular as also the hits from the ’70s and ’80s: ‘aa jaa re, aa jaa re o mere dilbar aa jaa’, ‘kabhi kabhi mere dil mein khayal aata hai’, ‘dikhayi diye yun ke bekhud kiya’, and many more that I grew up listening to, of course at that age only the songs used to play in my head, I never knew details about singer, composer, lyricist etc.
