It is one of the immortal ghazals of Bollywood. When one of the biggest music directors of that time, Naushad, heard the ghazals of Anpadh ( other ghazal being ” hai isi mein pyar ki aabroo”), he found out who the composer was, and then phoned Madan Mohan and took an appointment with him. When Naushad met Madan Mohan, Naushad said that these two ghazals by Madan Mohan were equal to all the compositions that he ( Naushad) had ever created.

Yesterday was 15th august, the independence day of India, and today, the very next day, is another important festival of India, namely Rakhi or rakshabandhan. As far as Bollywood songs are concerned, there are quite a few Rakhi songs that have made their mark. But this song, perhaps the oldest one, continues to set the benchmark, and this benchmark is yet to be bettered.
So enjoy this fabulous rakhi song sung by Lata. Lyrics are by Shailendra and music is by Shankar Jaikishan. The movie is Chhoti Behan ( 1959). wow, they do not make songs like this now a days.

This was one song that I found extremely romantic on its day. The lyrics say it all, and say it directly, no beating about the bush. And as a kid not even in my teens, I certainly loved such direct approach.
It was supposed to be a timepass song, but I like this song even today. This song shows that even such songs which are not aiming for immortality could become memorable if they are carefully crafted. Those were the days when Rajesh Khanna was on his ascendancy, and whatever he touched, turned to gold, and this movie “Aan Milo Sajna” was no exception.

Most of the time we like to listen to songs that are of high quality- viz evergreen song, songs touching our hearts etc.
Then there are some songs that are created without such lofty ideals in mind. These songs are just the need of the story- they serve the need of the story and are forgotten.
Here is one such song. The girl (Hema Malini) is unhappy with the boy (Dharamendra ) and wants to “teach” him a lesson by flirting with another person and thus making Dharamendra jealous.

The lyrics would really move you, in case you get the context of the song. And one need not know the story line to get the context. Just look at the video. The actors Rajesh Khanna and Rekha, as well as the singers Kishore and Lata make the context so clear that I need not fill in the background details. Very powerful emotions have been penned in very simple language by Gulshan Bawra. It was one of the last hits of R D Burman before the trend of chaalu songs lashed Bollywood like a thunderstorm.

Simple plain words can sometimes create good lyrics. And Gulzar was one lyricist who could create magical lyrics out of simple words, and here is a wonderful example of his lyrical wizardry. Follow the lyrics carefully, and one notices how well they express the feelings of joy that the lady is experiencing.
Lata has sung this song with some passion, and R D Burman has suitably tempered the exuberance of his music.

What makes a song tick and makes it hummable? Here let me talk about just this song. If you have not seen the movie or the visuals of the song, you can still visualise the theme by listening to the lyrics and the tune. One can make out that the two persons are on a hill station and are yearning for those days when they had time and the life went on at a leisurely pace. A mast mast song from 1970s, that had everyone dancing on their feet. The song is great, sung wonderfully by Kishore and Lata,and it has a characteristic foot tapping music by R D Burman. It was filmed on the reigning heart throbs Rajesh Khanna and Mumtaz.And let us not forget the lyrics. It is the lyrics of Anand Bakshi, so simple, so effective, and so easy to sing that has made this song one of the perennial favourites for most Bollywood music lovers.
