Entertaining Sales Pitch Songs – 6
—————————————————–

Aha, a very fragrant addition to this series.  We now have a song that is sung by the seller of ‘itra’, or ‘attar’ or Indian fragrant oils.

The word ‘attar’ ‘itr’ brings to mind the sensations of exotic perfumes, that is a world and a vocabulary all by itself.  It also brings with itself, the long list of glamorous and mysterious names such as Zaafraan, Shamaama, Majmuha, Motia, Raajgir, Chameli, Chandan (or Sandal), Firdaus, Nargis, Mushq-Amber, Gulab, Kesar (Saffron), Khas, Kasturi and many more.  These fragrant oils from India, are prepared from natural plant sources viz. flower petals, leaves, wood and plant resins.  (Except for ‘Kasturi’ (Musk), which is derived from animal origin viz. the musk deers.  Pure and authentic ‘Kasturi’ is a very rare thing to locate these days.  A sure test of its authenticity is that if you bring just a few grains of pure Kasturi near your nostrils, you will have a nosebleed, such is the power of this aroma.)

This iconic song from ‘Pyasa” was posted in the blog way back in 2009. I just revisited the page. There is only one comment there, so I was in two minds whether to leave my take on this song there on the page or include them in this post . I choose the latter so here goes:

The best thing about Holi songs is that in most cases, the message of colors is immediately apparent in the coloring of the lyrics. The songs get created in the spirit of Holi itself. It is a social and group celebrations, and the songs of this festival are sung by multiple singers, and performed by a multitude of players on the screen. And as we sit down to color code the lyrics, the resulting view is as colorful as the festival itself.

Shyamlal Babu Rai, who wrote endearing gems in the golden era of melody, such as “Bade Armaanon Se Rakha Hai Balam Teri Kasam”, and also popular hits for the new generation in the 1970s, such as “Aap Jaisa Koi Meri Zindagi Mein Aaye, To Baat Ban Jaaye”, had started his career back in the 1946 with two completely obscure and now unknown films – ‘Double Face’ and ‘Jungle Ki Pukaar’.  Information about these films is not easily traceable, and neither have the songs of these films have surfaced so far.

Remembering Indeewar, song writer par excellence, on the anniversary of his passing away today (27th Feb).

Mohammed Rafi – The Incomparable – 2
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

We all know that Mohammed Rafi Sb is the one playback who had many singers copying and imitating his singing style during his lifetime.  After his passing away, the tendency only increased.  There are a few shining examples like Sonu Nigam who started with Rafi Sb’s style and made a name for themselves.  He is, in my view, closely followed by Udit Narayan and Mohammed Aziz.  During the 1970s, when Rafi Sb was alive, there was Anwar who reportedly trained under him, and Rafi Sb himself regarded him highly.  All these singers strived to imitate the inimitable Rafi magic.

         Bombay Gangout – Part 4
         After The Meet.

After the gangout session, as everyone dispersed and proceeded to their respective destinations, Srinivas (SignalTimer) and I headed to the local train station, that is just like across the road from the gangout meeting place.  We took the train going south; we had a visit scheduled, to meet another common friend who is beset with the same passion of the Hindi film music from the Golden Era.  The name is Kushal Gopalka.  Some of the group members in Bombay may be familiar with this name, as he is active in this space, in a very different and interesting manner.

It is winters in north India.  Delhi continues to be cold.  The day temperatures have started to rise and the sun shines brightly in clear skies these days.  However, the nights still continue to be chilly.  And I so heartily empathize with the sentiments that Atul ji had expressed in one of the posts a couple of days ago – that how inviting is the warmth of a quilt these days, and how the cold weather has effected the productivity and the progress of the blog ticker.  A ha, someone else with the same issues of how this year’s extreme weather has disturbed the working routines.  If one wakes up very early, like I did today, at around 5.10 am, मन ही नहीं किया कंबल छोडने का, and the snooze took away another hour and a half before I felt brave enough to leave the warm refuge of the covers.

         Bombay Gangout – Part 3
         Lunch and After.

The arrangement for the lunch was in an adjacent cave in the dungeon itself.  We took leave of Mastermind, who had thus far been connected online with us, with the promise to reconnect, once the luncheon proceedings were done with.

So, yesterday afternoon we receive this message from Peevesie’s Mom.  There is a Chitalkar song.  A friend of hers is looking for it.  As it was revealed in later part of the thread, this friend had heard this song on the ‘Bhoole Bisre Geet’ program on Radio Ceylon (now called the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation).  When he switched on the radio, the song had already started so he missed the introductory information, like film name and artist etc.  Singer he could recognize from the voice.  It is Chitalkar (C Ramchandra).

Aha,

lailaa ki ungliyaan hain
majnoo ki pasliyaan hain
do do paise mein le lo babu
naram taazi kakdiyaan hain

I remember this jingle from childhood.  Occasionally used to hear it from the roadside hawkers, and once I even heard it in a radio play on Vividh Bharti.  Then many years later, I encountered this song also.  I used to wonder, whether the song came first or this jingle came first – which is based on which.  As I prepare this post, just casually I googled it, and found references to Lucknow and Agra where fresh vegetable vendors are known to use this jingle.  So maybe this is more of a folk tradition, converted into a film song later on.  Just like “Jumkha Gira Re Bareilly Ke Bazaar Mein“.  😉
