Last year, I had presented a pair of hamradeef ghazals of Jigar Moradabadi and Mirza Ghalib wo jo rootheen to manaana chaahiye sung by Mukesh and Talat Mehmood, respectively as a duet making them into one combined ghazal. The main features of hamradeef ghazals are that they have the same ‘qaafiya’ (rhythmic patterns), the same ‘baher’ (meter) and the same radeef (the last word in the second line of each she’r).

There is something very special about his voice. Not that other thespians of the industry are any way less impressive. Mohammed Rafi – The Incomparable – 2
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
We all know that Mohammed Rafi Sb is the one playback who had many singers copying and imitating his singing style during his lifetime. After his passing away, the tendency only increased. There are a few shining examples like Sonu Nigam who started with Rafi Sb’s style and made a name for themselves. He is, in my view, closely followed by Udit Narayan and Mohammed Aziz. During the 1970s, when Rafi Sb was alive, there was Anwar who reportedly trained under him, and Rafi Sb himself regarded him highly. All these singers strived to imitate the inimitable Rafi magic.

Today (5 february 2015) is the first death anniversary of Juthika Roy (20 April 1920-5 february 2014).
As a tribute to the empress of bhajans, here is a sweet Kabir Bhajan sung by Juthika Roy. Details of this song regarding its year, music director etc are not known. Seeing that the word Kabir appears in the lyrics, it appears to be a Kabir bhajan.

Considerable effort of musicians and music arrangers, besides the sound recordist, goes into the creation of any song that finally result in the song ending up becoming hummable for public at large. Some of the great musicians and arrangers who worked ‘behind the curtain’ in creating these songs were Antony Gonsalves, Antanio Vaz (Chic Chocolate), Sebastian D’souza, Frank Fernand, Enoch Daniels, Van Shipley, Manohari Singh, Kersi Lord, Maruti Rao Keer among many others.

So today (1 january 2015) heralds the arrival of a new year viz 2015. Many people try to go to a new year heralding get together parties but I did not share their enthusiasm and decided to keep indoors, considering the weather conditions. I feel that the weather conditions this time are colder and bleaker than they were the previous year and I feel that the advisable thing to do under the circumstances is to bid one’s time and hope that this kind of weather will go away in a few weeks.

behti hui ye nadiyaa ghulte huey kinaare
koi to paar utre koi to paar guzre
I heard this recital by Meena Kumari for the first time ‘ Yoon teri rehguzar se deewana war guzre ‘ when Sudhir Sir’s post appeared in the blog, I was spell bound and could not stop hearing it for days on. The recital was so heart wrenching and full of sadness. I recorded the audio on my mobile and shared with all my friends.

The Unforgettable was the first album of ghazals and nazms launched by Jagjit-Chitra. It was released in 1977.
These days television and FM radio stations bombard the viewers/listeners with new film songs. A song becomes popular at once, or not at all. In a month or two, another song takes its place at the top of the Pop charts and it’s gone forever.
