“Desh Premi” (1982) was one movie that I actually liked rather whole heartedly, but it appears that I was once again in the minority. While Manmohan Desai movies that I disliked turned out to be big hits, this movie was regarded as a damp squib at the box office.

“Chaandni” (1989) was a movie full of classy songs. And that was no mean achievement at a time when the quality of music in Bollywood movie music had hit rock bottom.

Kahaan se aaye badra

“Chasme baddoor” (1981) was a small bugdet non mainstream movie. This kind of movie, sans fights and sans lost and found storylines had their own fan following. There were several movies like this in 1980s that did reasonably well.

Music director Ravi is one person who entered Bollywood music scene in 1940s ( as an assistant music director) and he was around for the entire period that is regarded as the golden era of Bollywood music. He in fact can be described as one of the very few such persons who was there when the golden era began and he was still around when that era was over. All this while, he held his own . He was never jobless and he continued to churn out hit songs without fail.

In 1980s, “disco” songs became the rage in Bollywood. This “disco” epidemic was endemic in Bollywood movies for about 5-6 years. Most “disco” tunes were direct lifts of westen numbers.

When I was a young kid, I was made to believe that the hero-heroine would always be seen singing their love songs while running around trees. I am not very sure because I have not seen too many such songs.

“Chaandni” was like a welcome musical oasis among the desert of plagiarised disco music in 1980s. And the fact that the music directors of this movie, shiv Hari had worked with legendary music directors of the golden era of Bollywood music certainly helped.

The golden era of Bollywood movie songs was supposed to have ended circa 1980 when lyrics took the backseat and music became synonymous with plagiarised disco beats. Most songs of 1980s had trouble maintaining their popularity for more than a few weeks. Creation of all time great timeless classics became a thing of the past in 1980s.

“Kaalia” was a movie starring Amitabh Bachchan and Parveen Babi. This movie had music by R D Burman and he came up with some memorable music.
