“Masoom” (1982) was inspired from “Man, Woman and Child written” by Erich Segal. And it must be said that the tale was very well adapted by Gulzar who wrote the screenplay and directed with great sensitivity and understanding by Shekhar Kapoor. There were few people in the audience who remained unmoved by the plight of eight year old Rahul (played by Jugal Hansraj), a result of one night affair between an unwed Bhawna (played by Supriya Pathak) and a happily married DK (Naseeruddin Shah) at Nainital at a time when DK’s wife Indu (Shabana Azmi) is expecting their first child. DK goes back home and has a happy family life with two daughters Pinky (Urmila Matondkar) and Minni (Aradhana).

Today (19 august) is Utpal Dutt’s death anniversary. Utpal Dutt was typically known to play the role of an idiosyncratic oldie. During early 1980s, he got somewhat typed cast as a lecherous old man eyeing women greedily. He played such roles in movies like “Naram Garam” (1981) and “Shaukeen” (1982). In “Shaukeen”, he had company of like minded oldtimers viz Ashok Kumar and A K Hangal, but he was on his own in “Naram Garam” (1981).

Today (19 august) is the death anniversary of Utpal Dutt (29 march 1929- 19 august 1993). In Hindi movie he typically played a comedian or character actor and I do not think he may have ever got any song to lip sync. So any songs that I want to discuss will necessarily will have to be a song where Utpal Dutt is present, without doing any lip syncing.

Gulzar is one of those lyricists who has not yet reached his individual century of songs in the blog. Hopefully he will reach there in a few weeks time.

Just a little while ago Peevesie’s mom was informed by her son (Peevesie’s brother) that today (14 august) was Johny Lever’s birthday. I was aware of this fact, but I was not aware of any songs for the occasion.
