A voice that is a signature of mysteries. The deep bass vibrations resound like the echoing sound waves passing through the gullies and valleys of the mountainside, covered with moist and heavy fog, adding to the bass heaviness. Reminds one of ‘sannaata’ and ‘kahmoshi’ and ‘kohraa’ of the lonely pathways, being tread by a ‘raahgir’ – the ‘banjaara’ traveler walking alone and humming ‘chal akela. . .’.

Remembering Hemant Da on the anniversary of his passing away (26th September).

Yesterday evening Vividh Bharati was playing a whole lot of songs penned by Gulzar in the last two decades. And I was like “Oh My God! What a selection to post on the upcoming occasion of Gulzar Saab’s birthday”. But then I had this problem of zeroing into the right song for the blog as each and every song was a WOW! Just when I had thought of an appropriate number the next one would follow and I felt “nahin re, this should be the one!”. In the process I had selected all the songs played in that half an hour.

June 30th is the date of the publication of Saratchandra Chaterjee’s famous novel Devdas. It was published in 1917, thus we celebrated its 97th birthday on 30 june this year (2014). Devdas has, like no other novel before it or after, captured the imagination of film-makers in India. According to Wikipedia, there have been 16 films based on this story. Two of them have been made in Pakistan and Bangladesh each.

Khaamosh! Now that is what most mimicry artists would like us to remember this star by. But actually he is more loved for his stylized acting which was not or never a copy of any of the then reigning superstars…. Dilip Kumar- Raj Kapoor- Dev Anand or for that matter Shammi Kapoor. He had a great voice, didn’t have the classic good fair looks of the Pathan descendant actors of those times. Yet he always managed to keep his fan following in the face of stiff competition of Amitabh, Dharamendra, Rajesh Khanna Vinod Khanna etc. And he didn’t mind doing blink and you miss roles at the start of his career. Remember the inspector or havaldaar (don’t remember which he was) assisting Raj Mehra in Saajan (1969- Manoj Kumar Asha Parekh starrer)? He was also seen in a bit role in Pyar Hi Pyar (1969 Dharamendra starrer) (Wikipedia says that he was there in that movie, I have not seen it).

Two years have passed. Well, almost, just about two weeks short. It was another cool night of November that I was busy typing the write up for the 5000th song on this blog. There was much exhilaration and excitement that the 5000th milestone was reached. There were some very cautious and guarded comments, pointing towards the 10,000th song. But at that time, although the 5000th was already capped, the 10,000th still seemed daunting and unthinkable. That was two years ago.

If one is asked to select the most impish naughtiness on the Hindi film screen, one would be hard pressed to choose between two names. One of them is Geeta Bali, a prodigal performer that the industry lost in 1965, at an unbelievably young age – just 35 years.
