The first solo song that Kishore Kumar sang in his playback career was for Dev Anand in the movie “Ziddi” (1948) under the music direction of Khemchand Prakash. Then S D Burman, his mentor used his good offices to get Kishore Kumar to give plaback for Raj Kapoor in “Pyaar” (1950). But from that time onwards, Kishore Kumar sang for himself or for Dev Anand, in case it was a Dev Anand movie with S D Burman’s music direction. I can think of one more exception during 1950s though where Kishore Kumar sang for someone other than himself or Dev Anand. It was the iconic song Din hai suhaana aaj pahli taarikh hai(Pahli taarikh) (1954) which was picturised on Raja Nene.

Asrar-ul-hasan Khan, better known as Majrooh Sultanpuri (1st October 1919 to 24th May 2000), was one of the foremost Urdu poets to have graced the Hindi film industry. His first film as lyricist was “Shahjahan” which immortalised him in the annals of Hindi film music. The film’s music was by Naushad and it starred K. L. Sehgal in the title role.

Here is a classic “what ! This song was not yet posted !” category of song. 🙂 All these days, I was firmly under the belief that this song was discussed long back. 🙂

It took the occasion of Mahendra Kapoor’s birthday (9th january) for me to realise the fact that this song was not yet discussed in the blog.

There are some songs that I heard in my younger days and liked them without having much clue about their details. with time, these songs were forgotten. I have become reacquainted with several of these songs again after a passage of three decades or so. And I am not the only one. Several readers of the same generation also offered similar remarks about these songs.

When I meet people and I tell them that I have a blog of old songs, I get some well meaning advices, suggestions etc. One of these well meaning suggestions is that I need not re invent the wheel as far as writing down the lyrics of the song is concerned. Lyrics of all these songs are available in many sites, I am told almost patronisingly.

During 1970s, Amitabh Bachchan had taken over the crown of the number one male actor of the decade. The one actor, who looked like a challenger was Vinod Khanna, but Vinod Khanna’s mind was not into his career. He became a devotee of Achaarya Rajneesh (that is how he was then known, before he began to call himself “Osho”). As a result, he ended up nowhere. He neither got the spiritual nirvaana from his spiritual guru nor could he devote himself whole heartedly to his movie career. If he could only devote himself whole heartedly to his movie career, he could have been number one, at least briefly, and who knows, may be for even longer durations.

“Aap To Aise Na The” (1980) was a small budget movie with new actors viz Deepak Parashar and Raj Babbar and the seasoned Ranjeeta. What I remember the most about this movie was its radio advertisement on Vividh Bharati, where this song “tu is tarah se meri zindagi me shaamil hai” was played repeatedly.

I have mentioned in the past that I had a diary in 1970s, in which I noted down the lyrics of the songs that I liked the most. A few of the songs noted at that time have become forgotten, though they are just as good to listen to now as they were then.
