When India won the world cup on 2nd april 2011, it was a great feeling for millions of Indian cricket fans and they celebrated late into the nights and well into the next day and the next. The fact that the final was played on saturday and there were two days of holidays on the following days (Sunday being the normal holiday and monday being Indian calender’s new year day), people had enough time to celebrate and get over the hangover.

Loris, or lullabies, have always had a special place in Indian life, and many of these are sung by mothers and grandmothers as they rock the baby to sleep in the old fashioned cradle formed by hanging a long piece of cloth from a hook in the ceiling or in a regular cradle. Some loris have also been sung by men, generally widowers, and these tend to be melancholy ones, but there are some exceptions. In Carnatic music, the raga Neelambari is the one used to induce sleep and most lullabies in the South are sung in this raga.

Just like we these days lament the deterioration in the quality of Bollywood music, people used to lament about such deterioration even in the past. I personally thought that many of the songs of 1970s were pedestrial and chaalu songs. But now with the passage of time, when I came across far worse songs, then I realised that the so called poor songs of 1970s were gems in comparison.

Though boy and girl falling in love and singing love songs is a standard theme in Bollywood movies, such an activity is not as easy to carry out in real life India as is made out in Bollywood movies. In 1970s, when Amitabh Bachchan ruled the roost, I found it perplexing that Amitabh Bachchan movies with silly plots did good business whereas movies which were truly good in my judgement failed at the box office. To my mind, movies like “The Great Gambler”, and “Deshpremi” weere better movies than say “Muqaddar ka Sikandar” and “Suhaag”, but that is not what the public thought at that time.
