A hundred songs ! Given that the film industry generates many thousands of songs every decade, a hundred songs is a small number. But these hundred are special. These hundred belong to a very exclusive set of a total of 185 songs. And this exclusive set is the musical fortune, each song a jewel studded with priceless gems. Available for the pleasure of all, yet this treasure is a mine of gold and diamonds. Priceless, for this is all that is. There cannot be any more additions to these jewels. Yes, I refer to the recorded legacy of Saigal Saab – a list of 185 recordings in all. Of these, 110 belong to Hindi films, 37 are non filmi songs, in Hindi / Urdu. Of the remaining, a set of 30 recordings are part of Bengali cinema, and the remainder are in other languages (Punjabi, Tamil, Persian). So yes, this blog now hosts 100 of the total of 147 renditions (in Hindi/Urdu) by Saigal saab. An important accomplishment and an occasion to celebrate. Congratulations all.

In my teen and pre teen days, I was a cricket enthusiast. In addition to doing the usual thing line playing it and listening to its radio commentary, I was also into maintaining cricket records. Personal computers were obviously not invented them, and I kept my records manually on registers. I had several thick registers with me, and the scores of all test matches played til them was available with me, and I had collected all these records by painstakingly culling records from many publications. When a new test match began (that was the only form of international cricket back then), I already knew what record was likely to get made in that match. Those were the days when centuries, especially centuries by Indian cricketers were rare. Also, hitting sixes was a rare phenomenon. One Indian player called Salim Durrani had hit a six sometime in 1972 and based on that one six, he was touted in Indian magazines as Mr Sixer.

These days, I no longer maintain cricket records. We already have such records being maintained by professional cricket sites. But I find that these days I am maintaining similar records for Hindi movie songs that I am discussing. And the suggestion for maintaining these song statistics came from Raja, who also grew up with similar passion for cricket and Hindi movies in a neighbouring state in the eastern parts of the country those days.

The name Vasant Desai brings to memory a long list of songs rooted in the classical and folk traditional music of India. On this blog, today we have another celebration. With this post, the blog now carries 100 songs composed by Vasant Desai. In a career that lasted more than four decades, Vasant Desai was selective in the associations he made and never strayed away from his musical foundations. He scored the music for less than fifty films during this time. Thirty of these films are represented on this blog.

Even as I type out this write-up, my fingers are trembling. And I am not exaggerating! I have written over 50 write-ups for this blog so far and yet I find myself struggling to put down my thoughts coherently for this particular piece. It is not as if I have writer’s block (which I may also well have) ; it is just that the occasion seems to have got the better of me. I find myself totally inadequate to the occasion, and although I’ve just started, I have this nasty foreboding that I am going to make a mess of this, I am going to end up “choking”. I am suddenly beginning to empathise and sympathise with the South African cricket team. 😀

Regular visitors of this blog may have been noticing that I was discussing lots and lots of songs composed by Anil Biswas these days. And a few regulars may also be aware of the reason behind that. These days I am quite particular to see that major artists who have less than 100 of their songs in this blog reach their century of songs as quickly as I can help it.

When I first began this blog, this was not the only songs related blog that I began. I also began a blog on vishesh Jaimala where I would post the transcripts of vishesh Jaimala programmes presented by celebrities from the movie world. They would share their experiences and play a few songs. This programme, to my mind, is one of the best ever radio programmes that one can think of. And what celebrities ! Almost all big names (with a few exceptions) presented Vishesh jaimala programmes those days.
