I would prefer to stop counting the numbers, and rather go by the impressions in the memory. Well, it sounds so unbelievable that Nitin Mukesh turns 70 today. It seems like just a little while ago that we heard him sing for the first time in ‘Mera Naam Joker’ (1970). It was actually an unlisted song, in English. A song of good wishes and greetings – “Wish Me Luck”.
Then in 1981, when the song “Zindagi Ki Na Toote Ladi” from the film ‘Kranti’ was doing the rounds of popularity, my first impression on hearing this voice was – how come, was this song recorded earlier? The voice sounds so close to the voice of Mukesh, his father. Well yes, the voice is distinct, if one is listening carefully. But it also has an unmistakable shade of Mukesh’s voice.

Hullo Atuldom
27th June- birth anniversary of our beloved Panchamda a.k.a RD Burman. We have many posts on this blog which gives us details of his birth, his lineage, and many many other trivia connected with how he got the nickname “Pancham”.
So without wasting time or as some people would like to say ‘zyaada footage khaaye bagair’ I will come straight to today’s song. It is from the 1989 released, Vidhu Vinod Chopra written-produced & directed “Parinda”. It had Madhuri Dixit, Jackie Shroff, Anil Kapoor, and Nana Patekar in a rather grey role. Anupam Kher was there in a special appearance.

Today’s song is from the film Ismat-1944 – a Muslim Social film made by Fazli brothers. This film was directed by the younger brother Sibtain Fazli, making his Debut as a Director. This was the second film of Fazli brothers to be made in Bombay, after the earlier film Fashion-43 also made in Bombay. Prior to that, they began their film making from Calcutta. This was to avoid the possible hindrance from the Muslim fundamentalists in Bombay, who were against making films depicting Muslim social life. Their first such film was Qaidi-40, made at Calcutta. It was followed by Masoom-41 and Chauranghee-42-all at Calcutta. Then they shifted to Bombay.

In Hindi film industry, there are very few producer-directors who make the films out of their passion for bringing to the notice of the public at large, the social issues which they consider to be important. The mainstream film makers would generally avoid in their films such subjects as they are not money spinners at the box office unless they add ‘spices’ to those social issues to make it the box office success. I had earlier discussed such producers/directors like Nagesh Kukunoor and Sai Paranjpye. I guess, the main driving point for them in making socially relevant films is the creative satisfaction and probably the international recognition they may get. Showmanship in terms of top star actors, music directors, lyricists, costly sets and costumes and the marketing blitz before the release of the films do not fit into their budget.
‘Lakshmi’ (2014) was one socially relevant film based on a true story of child trafficking and prostitution. How did Nagesh Kukunoor got the idea of making ‘Lakshmi’ (2014)?

A special anniversary, of an artiste or celebrity.
And it is.
Today is the birthday of the most important celebrity for this blog.
In fact, without this celebrity, the blog would not even have existed.
Yes, I’m talking about Atul himself.
Wish you a very very happy birthday, Atul.

Songs Repeated in Hindi Films – 20
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
It is like cherry picking a hit parade – the repeat songs are almost always the popular hit songs that have made a serious mark on the collective memory of the audiences and lovers of Hindi films and film songs. And this song is no exception. Rather this song has been so popular – with its catchy lyrics and a very hummable melody – that one hears this song being used in many different avatars outside of the film frame – remixes, revival melodies, even background music for recorded dance performances. One can find such samples online on YT.
