Hullo to Atuldom

Its been a few weeks since I wrote a post. I have missed the birthdates of a few of my favourites. I won’t put the blame of these misses on the festival season as then we will have to excuse Atulji his numerous blank dates on the blog which we don’t do; we expect at least one post per day from him.

Today’s song is from an old film Ek hi Rasta-39. The film was made by Sagar movietone. It was directed by Mehboob Khan and the music was by Anil Biswas. These two legends actually established themselves in the cinema industry through Sagar Movietyone, which rightly included their names in their list of ” Jewels of Sagar “.

Today’s song is from film 102 Not Out-2018.

Readers who identify me as a writer on old films, may be shocked, as I am about to write on a New Era song, as new as not even 1 year old ! But honestly, when I accidentally bumped into this song’s credit, which said that Amitabh Bachhan was the Music Composer of this song, I was myself surprised. Out of curiosity, I found out that song on You Tube and heard/saw it. Frankly, I was not only impressed but even I liked the song. Of course, much of the liking came from seeing the wonderful video of the song- which is just superb !

Hindi Songs in Bangla Films – 2
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

The troika of Satyajit Ray, Ritwik Ghatak and Mrinal Sen had taken Indian cinema to a great height from the 1950s onward. They were regarded as the harbinger of the new wave cinema, also called the parallel cinema. They were all from Bengal and made the films mostly in Bengali. But they had not only had the pan India reach but also, they were globally famous through their films. They won many awards – both National and International.

Today’s song is a Parody song from film Phoolwari-46. It is sung by Mohantara Talpade. Jayashree T and Meena T were her brother’s daughters, I believe. Mohantara was a major female playback singer in the 40s. Starting with film Mamaji-42,she sang 117 songs in 54 films, till Inaam-55. Though she got married in 1950 to Dr. Ajinkya, she continued with using her maiden name to avoid confusion. Mohantara was a popular Bhavgeet and film singer in Marathi also.

Today’s song is a lovely duet by Lata and Hemant Kumar, from film Daaka-59. The film was made by Starland productions, Bombay for Hasmukh Kheda. The film was directed by Nanubhai Bhatt and the 6 songs of the film were written by Majrooh Sultanpuri (2 songs) and by Prem Dhawan (4 songs). Their music was composed by the King of Melody – Chitragupta. Dilip Dholakia was his assistant for this movie.

Today’s song is from the film Gokul ka Chor-1959. My last post was from film Gokul ka Raja-54. Its now time to get out of Gokul Town – after this post. Not that there are no more films on Gokul. There are still 2 more films with same title ” Gokul”, one of 1946 and the other of 1985. I always wondered why there were no films on Mathura or Vrindavan… two more places closely connected to Krishna. As far as Dwarka is concerned, there is a sole film ” Dwarkadheesh”, made in 1956.

Today’s song is from film ‘Gokul Ka Raja’ (1954). This is the first song of this film to be discussed here. I am surprised how this film was not featured on the blog so far, because songs of this film have been on You Tube for quite some time. May be, because the entire team of this mythological film was from Marathi film industry and the names of producer, director, MD, or the cast were not familiar to the most people. It is because this was a bilingual film, made first in Marathi as ‘Gokulcha Raja’ (गोकुळचा राजा) way back in 1950 and the Hindi version was released only in 1954.

First of all, my apologies for my infrequent appearances here. Even calling it a cameo is unfair to a cameo, because, to be honest, it is not even that. It is more like, a “blink and you miss” situation.

Anyway, here I am today, back with a post. The occasion is the Remembrance Day of someone very special to the Hindi film industry, and also to me. He has millions of fans around the world and is easily one of the legends of the industry.

I am talking about Kishore Kumar, of course.

Today’s song is from film Ajamil-1948. This was the maiden venture of Sanskar Chitra, Bombay, of owner Moolraj Kapadiya, who was also the producer of this movie. The film was directed by his close relative-Jamnadas Kapadiya, for whom this was his only film as a director. The film was made in Gujarati and Hindi simultaneously. The story, screenplay and songs for the Gujarati version were by Kavi Prabhulal Dwivedi and for Hindi version it was S P Tripathi, who wrote all the 12 songs of the film. While HFGK mentions name of Dwivedi as the Lyricist, according to Girdharilal Vishwakarma ji, the famous Music Historian and Record collector, the records of the songs of Hindi version carry the name of Tripathi. The Music Director of this film was Master Mohan Junior.
