Genius of Jaidev – 21
—————————
My last song in the ‘Genius of Jaidev’ series was posted on 6th January 2015. So it is after a gap of more than half a year that I resume the series with Asha’s song from the 1956 film ‘Samundari Daku’. Three(actually four, as ‘Dil Jawan Hai Aarzoo Jawan’, both solo by Talat and Talat-Asha duet are posted as one posting) out of six songs of this movie are already there on our blog. This one is from the remaining two solos of Asha.

We will discuss today a song from film Daaman-51. This song happens to be one of Lata’s favourite songs and also a Milestone song in her early career, when she was getting settled in her playback singing career. I am pleasantly surprised to note that this song still remained undiscussed here so far, thus giving me the opportunity to discuss this song now.

In my childhood and growing years thereafter I was very fond of listening to songs on Radio (Transistor). Other than ‘Binaca Geetmala’, some of the programs that I regularly listened to were S. Kumar’s ka filmi mukaddama, ek hi film ke geet, etc etc.
Other than filmi songs I used to listen mainly to BBC London service for news and especially for news on ‘cricket’ (‘khel samachar’).

Now, on recalling those days, I think that I started with this love for Radio when I was 9/10 yrs old, i.e. from 1977-78. It continued up to 1986 when I bought my first mono-cassette player (Philips). TV had invaded our lives by that time and I think that our first TV- a color Uptron TV- also came in 1986-87.

Mukesh and his Composers – 6
————————————
Jaidev ! The very name brings to mind some of the most beautiful and melodious creations in our film industry. Sadly, barring a few, the films for which he composed music did not fare well at the box-office. In spite of being a three time national award winner, luck and good fortune eluded him till the very last days of his life in terms of fame, money, happiness, health, marriage and a settled life.

When I came across the name of this film ‘Ek Khilaadi Baawan Pattey-1972’ in HFGK, I became curious and I started looking for its songs.

I still remember my school days when our cricket playing group used to meet every evening at the Colony recreation club. After going through the newspapers/ magazines in the library, we would hold discussions on various topics. Hindi films and their songs were naturally among the topics of discussions.

The discussions then were only in general terms and nowhere near as serious or detailed as the discussions on this blog now. We used to discuss the songs we liked and why we liked them, or songs that were popular and how one ranked them in order of our likings etc etc.

After film music became popular among the masses, Non film songs were relegated to the background. They not only became difficult to locate, but also became unknown for the newer generation. Compared to the fast, foot tapping songs of today, NFS were very slow and poetic. In most of the NFS ( except a few Jagmohan songs),the use of orchestra was not even worth a mention. I am aware of the names of a few Hindi film names that have ‘Haathi’ in their title. The most famous of them being ‘Haathi Mere Saathi’. ‘Main Aur Meraa Haathi’, ‘Safed Haathi’ are two other such titles. Then there was another film having an Elephant as the central character in it which I watched in my childhood days and cannot forget (because of one of its songs – ‘maa tujhe dhoondhoon kahaan’) viz. ‘Maa-1976’.
