Rajesh Khanna – The Phenomenon – 5
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Welcome to today’s post (albeit one day late) under this series. Today’s post under this series is coming after a long gap of almost two years, though in between I had written two articles on Rajesh Khanna’s anniversaries.

29th December 2018 is the 76th birth anniversary of Rajesh Khanna (29.12.1942-18.07.2012).

In the previous article under this series we had a song from the ‘1978 movie ‘Chakravyuh’ and today we move forward to the year ‘1979’ …

I had mentioned it earlier and our Atul ji has also been writing this that by ‘mid-seventies’ the Rajesh Khanna magic started declining and his ‘golden period’ was almost over.

Why I am writing ‘almost over’ was because though his movies were failing at the ‘box-office’ they were still coming and he was seen in doing many different types of roles.

The difference was that his movies were not getting commercial success or they do not generate the same hysteria as his movies had been from ‘1969 to 1975’ or we can say from the period of ‘Aradhana’ to ‘Prem Kahaani’.

In ‘1976’ we had his much awaited and talked about movie ‘Mehboobaa’ directed by Kaka’s favorite director Shakti Samanta and the ‘team’ of RD-Anand Bakshi-Kishore together though creating the magical ‘mere naina saawan bhaadon’, ‘parbat ke peechhe’, etc it was not successful at the ‘box-office’.

In ‘1977’ Kaka had a ‘hit’ in ‘Chhaila Baabu’. And the critically acclaimed ‘Palkon Ki Chhaaon Mein’…

‘1978’ again was not seen as good for him though his performances in ‘Chakravyuha’ and ‘Naukari’ were appreciated by the critics.

If we go through the filmography of Rajesh Khanna for these years i.e. 1976 to 1979, we can see his seeking different roles like and some of them like a ‘common man’ or ‘man next door’ viz. in ‘Mahaachor’, ‘Palkon Ki Chhaon Mein-1977’ (where he played a ‘postman’), ‘Chakravyuha-1978’, ‘Bhola-Bhala-1978’- an insurance agent (another role is of a ‘dacoit),

Then we can just see the range of directors he was working with for example if we talk of his ‘lean period’ or I can say those years where he was still a ‘under current’ existing strongly and waiting to hit on the ‘top’ again;

He had movies with directors like B.R. Chopra, Basu Chatterjee, Hrishikesh Mukherji, Narinder Bedi, Ramanand Sagar, Mehmood, Joy Mukherji, Omprakash and his favorite Shakti Samant.

Year Passed by Censor on Movie Director
1976 19.07.1976 Mehboobaa Shakti Samant
1976 * 29.07.1976 * Tyaag Deendayal Sharma
1976 16.10.1976 Mahaachor Narinder Bedi
1976 04.12.1976 Bandalbaaz Shammi Kapoor
1977 31.01.1977 Anurodh Shakti Samant
1977 20.04.1977 Chhaila Babu Joy Mukherji
1977 27.04.1977 Karm B.R. Chopra
1977 16.06.1977 Chalta Purza Bhappi Sonie
1977 18.11.1977 Aashiq Hoon Bahaaron Ka J. Omprakash
1977 04.11.1977 Palkon Ki Chhaon Mein Meraj
1978 25.04.1978 Bholaa Bhaalaa Satpal
1978 02.06.1978 Naukari Hrishikesh Mukherjee
1978 22.07.1978 Chakravyuha Basu Chatterjee
1978 26.12.1978 Prem Bandhan Ramanand Sagar
1979 10.01.1979 Jantaa Hawaldaar Mehmood
1979 18.04.1979 Amar Deep K. Vijayan and R. Krishnamurti

(* I have not included his movies with ‘Special Appearance’ like ‘Tinku’, ‘Hatyaara’, ‘Naya Bakraa’ etc in above list and corrected myself by including ‘Prem Bandhan’ for ‘1978’ which I missed to include in my previous article 😊)

And if we include ‘awards’ in our discussion he was nominated for the Best Actor Award by BFJA (Bengal Film Journalists’ Association Awards) for ‘Mehboobaa’, ‘Anurodh’, ‘Chakravyuha’, and ‘Amar Deep’ during this period.

He won the ‘All India Critics Association Award’ for ‘Best Actor’ for the movie ‘Chhaila Babu-1977’.

At the ‘Filmfare’ awards he was nominated in ‘Best Actor’ category for the movie ‘Amar Deep-1979’ (and this nomination for him at ‘Filmfare’ came after 1974 when he was nominated for the ‘Best Actor’ award for ‘Prem Nagar-1974’).

(for that matter sometimes, I think that he was loved very much by ‘Bengal’ and they loved him the most. I have a personal experience related to this, which I intend to share in my future articles under this series).
***

In my previous posts I start giving the details of the movies of Rajesh Khanna in that particular year of the song I was presenting therewith. And so, in the last two posts where we discussed the songs of Rajesh Khanna movies of 1977 and 1978, I am presenting today’s post with a song of a movie released in 1979.

His movie list of 1979 is as given below;

SNo Movie Year Passed by Censor Board
01 Jantaa Hawaldaar 1979 10.01.1979
02 Nayaa Bakraa 1979 16.02.1979*
03 Amardeep 1979 18.04.1979
04 Muqaabalaa 1979 14.09.1979*

(*special appearance)

(So, that is one change that I have made in my ‘presentation’ of the posts in this series. And, while I find it interesting, I am sure that readers will also enjoy this.)

Because, in this journey we have started from the years where Rajesh Khanna’s golden period was over and his movies in row were getting flopped at the box-office and he was ‘trying hard’ to get over to the ‘top’ again.

And though his movies, acting wise some the best of his career, had miserable failures at the box office his fans were still there and while Kaka was ‘as always’ in his heart saying to them ‘is kadar itnaa tumhe ham pyaar kartein hain’, his fans were waiting and more fans were waiting, to welcome him back again with ‘tum nahin jaanoge, tum nahin maanoge ‘kis kadar kitnaa’ tumhe ham pyaar kartein hain’ …

With this movie ‘Amar Deep-1979’ we move to the ‘eighties’ where Kaka’s style and mannerisms hit the screens again and Rajesh Khanna days were back again reaching to its heights (in terms of number of his number of movies in a single year) …

***

‘Amar Deep-1979’ was directed by K. Vijayan and R. Krishnamurti for ‘Sujatha International, Madras’. Presented by K. Balaje.

It had Rajesh Khanna, Vinod Mehra, Shabana Azmi, Deven Verma, A.K. Hangal, Roopesh Kumar, Bindu and others. Ashok Kumar had a special appearance in the movie while Mithun Chakravarty had a ‘guest appearance’ in this movie. This movie introduced actress Deepa (from South).

Dialogues of this movie were written by Ali Raza, and Prem Kapoor was the dialogue director. Editing for this movie was done by B. Kandaswamy.

Music of this movie was composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. This movie had four songs written by Anand Bakshi. Anuradha Paudwal, Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar had given their voices to these songs.

Rafi Saab had sung a song (few lines) which appears at the end of the movie and had already been posted on the blog here.

In the very beginning of the titles of the movie ‘sincere thanks’ have been expressed to Kaifi Azmi and Rafi Saab, so I guess that these lines were written by Kaifi Azmi.

HFGK Vol-V does not mention this song in the list of songs of this movie. (However, I would request editors to correct the number of songs of this movie to ‘five’ on the blog, with the today’s song it will be (3/5))

One other song from this movie ‘koi na tere pehle thhi’ was posted earlier on the blog in 2013.

I get to watch this movie after Rajesh Khanna’s sad demise in 2012 on a TV Channel.

Let us now enjoy today’s song. The song is picturised on Rajesh Khanna and Shabana Azmi.

Song-Tum nahin maanoge (Amardeep)(1979) Singers-Kishore Kumar, Anuradha Paudwal, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-Laxmikant Pyarelal

Lyrics

Tum nahin maanoge
Tum nahin jaanoge
Iss kadar itnaa tumhe
Ham pyaar kartein hain
Zindagi hai tumse
Har khushi hai tumse
Hum tumhaare saamne iqraar kartey hain
Tum nahin maanoge
tum nahin jaanoge
Kiss kadar kitna tumhen hum pyaar kartein hain
Aankh jhuk jaati hai
saans ruk jaati hai
Jab kabhi hum pyaar ka ijhaar kartey hain
Tum nahin maanoge

Arey tum nahin jaanoge ae

Har ik din ahaa milan ka din
Ahaa
Har ik din ahaa milan ka din
Har ik raat milan ki raat

Ab tumse kahen kaise
Lab pe jo ruki hai baat
Hum kahaan us baat se inkaar karte hain
Kiss kadar kitna tumhe hum pyaar kartein hain
Tum nahin maanoge ae

Tum nahin jaanoge ae

Rut badli samaa badlaa aa aa
Rut badli samaa badlaa
Lehraaya naya mausam
Aise mein kaho tum to
Kaanon mein kahen kuchh hum

Jo kaho manzoor hum sarkaar kartey hain
Ham tumhaare saamne iqraar kartey hain
Tum nahin manaoge
Tum nahin jaanoge

Jhaanko to mere dil mein
Samjho kya kahaani hai

Ye apni mohabbat ki
Badi pyaari nishaani hai
Oon oon oon oon oon oon oon
Ye apni mohabbat ki
Badi pyaari nishaani hai
Dillagi kya yoon sarey bazaar karte hain
Are iss kadar itna tumhe hum pyaar kartein hain
Tum nahin maanoge
Tum nahin jaanoge
Kiss kadar kitnaa tumhe hum pyaar kartey hain

Iss kadar itnaa tumhe hum pyaar kartein hain
Tum nahin maanoge
Tum nahin jaanoge

# Superstar Child Artist – Jr. Mehmood # 5
—————————————————————————

Welcome all to this fifth article in this series, where I am presenting songs picturised on Superstar Child Artist Junior Mehmood and simultaneously exploring his filmography along with his biographical information too.

So far, we have enjoyed the following songs under this series;

Lagey koi lottery koi jackpot lagey

Na koi paisa na ilm

Mera naam hai Mehmood

Birha ki rain sooni sooni sejariya

As I have mentioned in my articles earlier, Junior Mehmood was a familiar name for us children who were growing and still young in the years of the ‘seventies’, and he was the most loved ‘child artist’ in those years of early seventies.

And because of those memories and nostalgia associated with the movies he acted, some of the songs picturised on him became a part of my permanent memory.

Today’s song is one such song and which surprisingly have remained to be posted on the blog so far.

Naeem Sayyad whom we know by the name of Junior Mehmood was born on 15th November’1956 in a middle-class family in Mumbai. His father was a railway engine driver in the railways and Naeem was among the six siblings in the family.

His elder brother was a photographer and used to work for films and during one such shoot when little Naeem accompanied him to watch the shooting it so happened that when a child star working in the movie ‘Kitna Naazuk Hai Dil’ (shelved) was not able to deliver his dialogues properly that little Naeem took a dig at him saying ‘you cannot even speak these simple lines’. The director of the movie was present there and he asked little Naeem if he can speak those lines without mistake and there little Naeem got his first break to work in Hindi movies and the rest is history, as he was noticed (on the sets of ‘Suhaag Raat-1968’) by the great comedian Mehmood who not only give his name to him and recommended him to many producers/directors. Thereafter it was not looking back for Junior Mehmood and he had gone on to become the most famous and beloved ‘child artist’ during those years and also one of the richest among other junior artists then.

Junior Mehmood celebrated his 62nd birth anniversary during last month (15th November) and though I personally wished him on his birthday on the 14th evening itself I got late in sending this article for the blog due to some hectic work schedule at workplace. (I also apologise to our Editors for the delay on my part in sending this article to them, even though I had sent them a message of sending the article then).

Well, coming back to the today’s song, it is from the 1970 movie ‘Ghar Ghar Ki Kahaani’.
Yes, the movie which is mostly famous for its song ‘samaa hai suhaana suhaana, nashe mein jahaan hai’. And very aptly this movie was launched with this song on the blog ( almost ten years back now 🙂 ) in 2009.

I also mentioned in my earlier articles under this series that I am trying to list out the filmography of Junior Mehmood since I found that the filmography mentioned by various sources had some discrepancies in it.

‘Naunihaal-1967’ was his first released movie.

He shot to fame with his performance in ‘Bramhachari-1968’ wherein he also performed on Mehmood’s ‘ham kaale hain to kya hua’ (from ‘Gumnaam-1965’).

Mehmood was his ‘Guru’.

In ‘1971’ he again performed on Mehmood’s famous ‘Mehbooba mehbooba bana leo mijhe dulha’ (from ‘Sadhu Aur Shaitaan-1968’) in the movie ‘Johar Mehmood in Hong Kong’ wherein Mehmood and I.S. Johar were the main leads.
I have mentioned the above in my earlier article in this series here.

We also saw him repeating Mehmood’s ‘Hamjoli-1966’ act in the song ‘birha ki rain sooni sooni sejariya’, which was covered in the previous article in this series.

However, during the preparation of today’s article I came across a link from the movie ‘Baalak-1969’ where Junior Mehmood is performing on Shashi Kapoor’s ‘Affo Khudaa’ from the 1965 movie ‘Jab Jab Phool Khile’. I am giving this link for interested readers to watch it here (just watch it and enjoy 🙂 ).

In the song being presented today we can see him doing a ‘Shammi Kapoor, Raj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar and Mehmood’ 😊

From 1967 to 1970 he acted in twenty-three movies as mentioned in the table given below.

And from this list we can guess how popular he was in those years.
(The HFGK Vol IV (1961-1970) does not mention the release dates of the movies so it is difficult to arrange the movie according to their date of release unless otherwise I watch each movie and note down its date of release from its certificate.)

Sno Movie Name Year
1 Naunihaal 1967
2 Gunehgaar 1967
3 Parivaar 1967
4 Brahmachari 1968
5 Farishta 1968

7 Suhaag Raat 1968
8 Vaasna 1968
9 Anjaana 1969
10 Baalak 1969
11 Chanda Aur Bijli 1969
12 Do Raaste 1969
13 Nateeja 1969
14 Pyaar Hi Pyaar 1969

20 Ghar Ghar Ki Kahaani 1970
21 Harishchandra Taramati 1970
22 Kati Patang 1970
23 Yaadgaar 1970

‘Ghar Ghar Ki Kahaani-1970’ was directed by T. Prakash Rao for ‘Vijaya International, Bombay’.

It was produced by B. Nagi Reddi & Chakrapani.

It had Balraj Sahni, Nirupa Roy, Bharati, Gajanan Jagirdar, Sulochana Chatterjee, Shabnam, Maruti, Praveen Pal, Jalal Agha and Rakesh Roshan with Mahesh Kumar, Baby Sonia, Master Ripple and Junior Mehmood and supported by many others.

Om Prakash, Jagdeep and Shashikala made a ‘guest appearance’ in this movie.

The story of this movie was written by Poovanan M.A while the dialogues were written by Inder Raj Anand. Editing of this movie was done by C.P. Jamboolingam.

This movie had total five songs written by Rajinder Krishan (2), Hasrat Jaipuri (2) and Qamal Jalalabadi (1).
Music for this movie was composed by Kalyanji-Anandji.

Hemlata, Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar and Mahendra Kapoor had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

(going by the titles of this movie I guess it was passed by the Censor Board on 04.11.1970) …

This movie ‘Ghar Ghar Ki Kahaani-1970’ is important from the point of view of Junior Mehmood films because he was nominated for the National Award for the best child actor for this movie. However, it awarded to Rishi Kapoor for the movie ‘Mera Naam Joker-1970’.

I was curious to know how he had felt that time and want to know from Junior Mehmood himself. When asked about it, he was very humble to say that it was a quite happy moment in his life as he was appreciated and he didn’t have any regrets on not winning the award then.

Today’s song is sung by Hemlata and written by Qamar Jalalabadi. Music is composed by Kalyanji-Anandji.

Let us now enjoy the song …

Note *** (there are some parts of the old songs of Hindi movies used in this song of which the lyrics were already available on the blog and I have copied the respective ‘antaras/song’ from the blog and reproduced here, instead of noting down the lyrics again)

Today 24th December 2018 is the ninety-fourth (24 December 1924 – 31 July 1980) birth anniversary of the ‘divine voice’ Mohammad Rafi Saab.
And today 24th December also happens to be the birth anniversary actor Mahipal (24 December 1919 – 15 May 2005).
I have very deep respect and great admiration for both of them in my heart and it will be until we are associated with Hindi Films and Hindi Film Music.

It was in 2017 that I came to know about the birth anniversary of Mahipal ji and its falling on 24th December (because of this article on BHD by our own Shishir ji) – the same date – we have birth anniversary of Rafi Saab. So, last year I presented a song from the movie ‘Maharaja Vikram-1966’ here.

This year too I wish to present a song and thus was looking a song sung by Rafi Saab and lip synced by Mahipal. I think most of the songs may be have already been covered and I was able to find a ‘duet’ sung by Rafi Saab and Sudha Malhotra and lip synced on screen by Mahipal and Anita Guha.

This song is from the 1957 movie ‘Pawanputra Hanuman’.

It was directed by Babubhai Mistry for ‘Basant Pictures’. It was presented by Homi Wadia for ‘Wadia Brothers Productions’.

It had S.N. Tripathi, Mahipal, Anita Guha, B.M. Vyas, Krishna Kumari, Ratnamala, Heera Sawant, Indira Bansal, Korega, Amirbai Karnataki, Praveen Paul, Mumtaz, Master Prithvi, Helen, Kanchanmala, Shiela Vaz, Samar Roy, Dalpat, Sudesh, Ramshastri, Bhujbal Singh Uma Dutt, S.K. Singh, Shri Bhagwan, Ajit Kumar, R.S. Dubey, Abdullah, Yadav, Julian and others.

This movie had as many as ten songs composed by Chitragupta and written by G.S. Nepali (Six songs) and Saraswati Kumar Deepak (four songs).

Asha Bhonsle, Geeta Dutt, Manna Dey, Mohmmad Rafi, Shamshad Begam, Sudha Malhotra and Usha Mangeshkar had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

Today’s song is written by Gopal Singh Nepali.

Actually, I came across this song as a song from the movie ‘Hanuman Chalisa – 1969’ on YouTube. As I was not aware of the details of this movie, I asked for the movie page from HFGK Vol IV from my daughter. Going through the details as mentioned in HFGK it is mentions that: –
“As per information from the production house ‘Basant Pictures, Bombay’ (1) this film was a collection of some parts of the previous movies produced by them, (2) also including songs from those movies, (3) and this movie ‘Hanuman Chalisa-1969’ was not a full-length feature film.
That made me more curious to know about its songs (if any) presented on the blog and if the today’s song was already there.
From the list I could not found any songs on the blog and keep repeatedly searching for titles with ‘Hanuman Chalisa’… until I find a link on YT which mentions the name of the movie as ‘Pawanputra Hanuman-1957/ Hanuman Chalisa-1969’ for this song ‘mere Raam kahaan ho tum …’

Three songs from this movie ‘Pawanputra Hanuman-1957’ have already been posted on the blog wherein our two respected Seniors Arun ji and Sadanand ji have shared two and one posts respectively sharing songs of this movie.

Let us now enjoy the today’s song sung by Rafi Saab and Sudha Malhotra and performed on screen by Mahipal and Anita Guha.

#the Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #

# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 75# Dharmendra- Memories of the Seventies #
————————————————————————————————–

Welcome all to this article of mine which comes after a long gap of more than a month, and though I am late in sending this article, I hope our editors will consider this for post. And that will also help me in getting back into the ‘article writing’ again, because since last two months I am trying to complete and send some of my unfinished articles, but the schedule at work front and very less time after official work is not allowing me time and the concentration to focus on the articles I wish to share.

Well, with this article I hope I get back into writing and share my thoughts taking you down memory lane into the ‘seventies’ again 🙂

***

8th December 2018 is the 83rd birth anniversary (08.12.1935) of actor Dharam Singh Deol whom we fondly know as Dharmendra. And, ‘maa kasam …’ 🙂 , he will be there in our fond memories of the movies from almost every decade ever since he began his career in the Hindi movies with ‘Dil Bhi Tera Ham Bhi Tere’ (1960) till the very recently released movie ‘Yamla Pagla Deewaana-Phir Se’ (2018).

For me I have fond memories of watching many of his movies with my uncles, like ‘Shikaar’ (1966), ‘Yakeen’ (1969), ‘Kab? Kyun? Aur Kahaan?’ (1970), ‘Mera Gaon Mera Desh’ (1971), ‘Resham Ki Dori’ (1974), ‘Raja Jaani’ (1973), and more. Then I also remember some of his movies which I must have watched with my parents like ‘Yaadon Ki Baarat’ (1973), ‘Dost’ (1974), ‘Sholay’ (1975), ‘Maa’ (1976), ‘Charas’ (1976), ‘Dream Girl’ (1977), ‘The Burning Train’ (1980) etc. I still remember watching his ‘Devar’ (1966), during the Ganpati Festivals on the small 16mm screen in open grounds in the seventies.

Then there were movies which I watched with my brothers and cousins during the ‘summer vacations’ like ‘Dharam-Veer’ (1977), ‘Chacha Bhatija’ (1977), ‘Ram Balram’ (1980), ‘Teesri Aaankh’ (1982), ‘Samrat’ (1982), ‘Main Intaqaam Loonga’ (1982). And then movies like ‘Aap Ki Parchhaayiyaan’ (1964), ‘Main Bhi Ladki Hoon’ (1964), ‘Izzat’ (1968), ‘Mere Hamdam Mere Dost’ (1968), ‘Khamoshi’ (1969), ’Sharaafat’ (1970), ‘Samadhi’ (1972), ‘Jheel Ke Us Paar’ (1973), ‘Chaitaali’ (1975), ‘Chupke-Chupke’ (1975), ‘Ek Mahal Ho Sapnon Ka’ (1975), ‘Kinaara’ (1977), ‘Blackmail’ (1978), ‘Dillagi’ (1978) which I watched during the weekly screening of movies in the re-creation club building in our colony where we were staying then.

Then, when I was a grown-up boy 🙂 there was a phase in my life when I was learning in 11 -12th std but was less on studies and more on cricket and movies. I watched many of his movies like ‘Haqeeqat’ (1964), ‘Pyaar Hi Pyaar’ (1968), ‘Jugnu’ (1973), ‘Patthar Aur Paayal’ (1974), ‘Pratigya’ (1975), and the other movies released during those years (1983-1985) i.e. ‘Naukar Biwi Ka’ (1983), ‘Qayaamat’ (1983), ‘Jeene Nahin Doonga’ (1984), ‘Baazi’ (1984), ‘Dharam Aur Kanoon’ (1984), ‘Jaagir’ (1984), ‘Jhoothha Sach’ (1984), ‘Raj Tilak’ (1984) etc. And then I got to watch some movies like ‘Bandini’ (1963), ‘Neela Aakaash’ (1965), and ‘Satyakaam’ (1969), ‘Phagun’ (1973), on television (‘Doordarshan’) during this period.

The above was when we were still located in the Akola District of Maharashtra (CP & Berar circuit for the movies). And by that time I was already a Rajesh Khanna fan 🙂 . Reading the film magazines then I came to know that it was Dharmendra whose movies were still running good even during the Kaka’s Superstardom days. After that we shifted to Parli Vaijnath – Marathwada region of Maharashtra (and known as in the Nizam Circuit for the movies).

There I had already taken up working in a construction company and during this period till 1988 I watched many of the old and new movies. I remember I watched Dharmendra’s ‘Aaayi Milan Ki Bela’ (1964), ‘Kaajal’ (1965), ‘Aaye Din Bahaar Ke’ (1966), ‘Anupama’ (1966), ‘Dil Ne Phir Yaad Kiya’ (1966), ‘Phool Aur Patthar’ (1966), ’Aankhen’ (1968), ‘Aaya Saawan Jhoom Ke’ (1969), ‘Rakhwaala’ (1971), ‘Loafer’ (1973), ‘Keemat’ (1973), ‘Baghaawat’ (1982), ‘Hukumat’ (1987), ‘Aag Hi Aag’ (1987) etc.

Then I shifted to Kota (Rajasthan) in Nov 1988 for my professional career and there also watching the movies was the ‘main source of entertainment’. I got to watch many old Hindi movies as well as the new ones. I got to watch Dharmendra’s movies like ‘Batwaara’ (1989), ‘Naakabandi’ (1990), ‘Farishtey’ (1991) and after many years I got to watch ‘Mera Gaon Mera Desh’ (1971) again in a theater. I watched the film repeatedly on consecutive days and enjoyed it a lot. Later on, based at Kota and traveling around places like Nimach, I watched ‘Tehalka’ (1992). I also remember correctly that I watched his ‘Man Ki Aankhen’ (1970), on VHS cassettes on ‘VCR’ we use to hire to watch movies then during our weekly get-together or holiday. Later I bought VCDs of the films ‘Ganga Ki Lehren’ (1964), ‘Dulhan Ek Raat Ki’ (1967), which has one of my favorite songs “Ek Haseen Shaam Ko. . .“.

And there are other movies like ‘Aadmi Aur Insaan’ (1968), ‘Bahaarein Phir Bhi Aayengi’ (1966), ‘Chunaoti’ (1980), ‘Do Chor’ (1972), ‘Ishq Par Zor Nahin’ (1970), ’Jeevan Mrityu’ (1970), ‘Jwaar Bhaata’ (1973), ‘Kahaani Kismat Ki’ (1973), ‘Mohabbat Zindagi Hai’ (1966), ‘Naya Zamaana’ (1971), ‘Razia Sultan’ (1983), ‘Tum Haseen Main Jawaan’ (1970), which I don’t remember correctly but I think I watched them either in theatre or on TV. As I was going through his filmography for this article, I was thinking that there are still many movies of him (till seventies) which I have not watched and should watch them as and when possible.

The latest movies that I have seen of Dharmendra is ‘Apne’ (2007), which I could not watch in theatre when I was in Kachchh-Gujarat and had later bought its DVD and watched with my parents and family at home.

Watching his movies has always been a different experience and entertaining and enjoyable too. I think me, and many others like me, will always be thankful to him for the joy he has given to us through his movies. His fight scenes with Shetty are always a favorite of mine and those were the main attractions from his movies too, wherever Shetty was co-star in the movies he acted.

Then there are songs from his ‘black and white’ movies and many other ‘musicals’ of the ‘seventies’ which I cannot forget and many of them are ‘songs that brings back memories’ for me. I have watched many of his movies more than once and it is always pleasant to watch him on the screen. I cannot forget his ‘emotional speech’ in the ‘Filmfare awards function’ when he was felicitated with the ‘Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award’.

His movies also have many emotional scenes between a ‘mother and son’ where I always find him very natural and touching. For today’s occasion I am presenting a song from the 1976 movie ‘Maa’. As I had mentioned earlier in one of my articles that there are few Hindi movies where an elephant has been a central character in the movies and few of these movies have been a part of my permanent memory since then. I remember to have watched this movie with my parents but have forgotten it now except Dharmendra, the elephants in the movie and this song that I am presenting today.

Though the song is a background song and not lip-synced by Dharmendra, I want to introduce it with this article. (I had earlier sent this song to Atul ji in Oct 2012). Also, this is the song which brings back memories of those years for me. It is part of that ‘nostalgia’ of Hindi movies and the songs for me over the years.

So, I when decided to share an article for Dharmendra’s birth anniversary (now belated), I searched for other songs from his movies where he also lip-synced the songs, or even from this movie ‘Maa’, but I strongly feel sharing of this song sung by Rafi Saab which is a trip down memory lane for me from the movies of Dharmendra of the seventies.

‘Maa-1976’ is edited and directed by M.A. Thirumugam for ‘Devar Films, Madras’. It is produced by Sandow M.M.A. Chinnappa Devar who had also written the story of this movie. It has Dharmendra, Hema Malini, Nirupa Roy, Ranjeet, Padma Khanna, Devar, Om Prakash, Paintal, Bramhachari, Shashi Kiran, Rajan Haksar, Urmila Bhatt, Umesh Sharma, Raj Baldev, Viju, Kalpana, Gemini Balu, Narayan Mustafa, Anand Kumar and others. Dialogues for this movie were written by Inder Raj Anand and editing was done by M.G. Balurao (assisted by K. Ramu). The movie was passed by Censor Board on 10.09.1976.

The movie has total seven songs in it as per HFGK and all the seven songs are written by Anand Bakshi and composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. HFGK also mentions about two tracks as club dance music and dance music in this movie. Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, and Mohd Rafi had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

I am reproducing below the ‘plot summary’ of this movie as mentioned on IMDB

Vijay lives with his mother in a palatial house deep in the jungles in South India where he makes a living trapping animals for circuses, zoos – both nationally and internationally. He meets with beautiful US-returned Nimmi, both fall in love with each other and want to get married. Vijay’s mother cautions them both against separating new-born animals from their birth mothers, but both refuse to listen. Then the unexpected happens, a mother lioness, angered at Vijay for taking her cubs, attacks him, and leaves him badly wounded. With the help of his mother, and Nimmi, Vijay recovers and despite of what happened, and his mother’s warning, he again goes to trap animals – this time a baby elephant for a circus. He does manage to trap the elephant in a pit, but the angered mother elephant pursues them, even after they transport it in a truck. Her maternal and protective instincts come to fore, she overtakes the truck, dismantles it, but is chased away by Vijay and his employees. She turns to attack Vijay, but his mother intervenes – and is instantly attacked and crushed. Holding his mother in his arms, Vijay swears to hunt them the elephant as well as all other animals and kill them one by one, but his dying mother makes him promise that he will not do so, but instead return all cubs to their parents, as well as the baby elephant. Vijay promises to do so, and his mother passes away. Vijay is devastated, in heart-wrenching sorrow & pain, he calls out to his mother, and carries out her promise. He releases all trapped animals, and returns the cubs to the jungle. But returning the baby elephant, Ganesh, is another issue altogether as it has been transported to the city, and must be brought back. When Vijay goes to bring it back, he finds out that the truck had broken down, the elephant had escaped and is lose in the city. He desperately goes around looking for it. In the meantime, back home, the mother elephant is on a rampage, enraged at being separated from its child, it crushes vegetation, attacks villagers, and tears down their dwellings. And the next target that looms before it is none other than Vijay’s beloved – Nimmi…

Today’s song is sung by Mohd Rafi and composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. Lyrics are by Anand Bakshi. The movie ‘Maa’ also makes a debut on the blog today …!!!

Belatedly wishing Dharam ji a very happy birthday and a healthy and peaceful life ahead …

[Author’s Note: This also serves one of my purpose of introducing movies having ‘same title’ too. We already have the movie ‘Maa-1952’ and ‘Maa-1960’(UR) on the blog. And fortunately, I had the opportunity to share couple of songs from the ‘1952-Maa’ and one song from the ‘1960-Maa’ on the blog].

किसीकी बद्दुआ लग जाती है
अपनी ही बन्दूक से गोली
खुद पे भी चल जाती है
मैंने कैसा खेल ये खेला
रोऊँ बैठा आज अकेला

3755 Post No. : 14720 Movie Count :

4022

Welcome all to this article which comes after my last post on 13th October in Remembrance of Kishore Kumar. In between I was supposed to send couple of articles which I could not do because of the project work now in full swing at site and we have to sometimes work for extended hours too. I was also trying to finish two of my earlier posts which got stuck up due to the same reason and then even though they were in my mind I was trying to get back to the rhythm to re-start and complete them.

Our Peevesie’s Mom generally mentions about the anniversaries of the artists and she also tries to keep sending posts for such occasions and simultaneously she also tries to combine anniversaries of various artists and anniversaries of our team members too. 🙂 Her last post on the blog was for celebrating our beloved Raja Saab’s birthday and of Raveena Tandon too.

Well the reason for today’s post is also a birth anniversary occasion which we missed and which even I was not aware till yesterday.

It so happened that after leaving the site (office) on Saturday afternoon me and my colleagues had to visit a nearby town around 40 kms from here to do some minor shopping and have a coffee at the only mall in the town. While travelling our drivers generally listen to the songs in local language here. And that triggers our mood too to listen Hindi songs. I keep my two pen drives full of HFM every time with me. After listening to many albums or Pancham we switched over to the nineties and to the songs of the movie ‘Maya Memsaab’ (1993). If anybody has listened to them might be aware that this movie had all good songs penned by Gulzar Saab. Lata Mangeshkar has sung four solo songs in this movie and all of them are very very nice compositions. And poetry of Gulzar Saab as usual is at his best in the songs of this movie.

The music for this movie is composed by Hridaynath Mangeshkar. I had been listening to his compositions and many of his albums in Marathi are just pure classics and then in Hindi we had ‘Dhanwan’ (1981), ‘Mashaal’ (1984), ‘Lekin’ (1991). ‘Lekin’ is also one of my most favourite albums and I had sent a few of its songs to Atul ji when I was a newcomer on the blog, which are yet to be posted on the blog. 🙂

Well, it just piqued my interest to read about Pandit Hridaynath Mangeshkar since I immensely like his compositions – Marathi as well as Hindi and Non-filmy. As I for information about him I noticed that 26th October (26-10-1937) was his birth anniversary too.

I remember that our beloved Kamath Sir had written an article on him in details in 2012 on his birth anniversary with the song from the movie ‘Lekin’ – “Suniye Ji Araj Mhaaro“.

Later on, on Hridyanath ji’s birth anniversary in 2014, Atul ji has posted the song “O Baawri Re“, from the 1969 film ‘Prarthana’, shared by Prakash ji.

On the blog so far, we have the following songs of Pandit Hridaynath Mangeshkar represented as Composer/Singer;

Going by the details available on the internet sources, about his filmography I list the following movies where he has composed music, remaining yet to be represented on the blog,

‘Harishchandra Taramati’ (1970), ‘Chaani’ (1977), ‘Chakra’ (1980), ‘Ram Ki Ganga’ (1984), ‘Pyaari Bhabhi’ (1986), ‘Maya Memsaab’ (1993), ‘Laal Salaam’ (2002).

Today I present a song from the 1993 movie ‘Maya Memsaab’, which makes its debut on our blog. The film is produced and directed by Ketan Mehta. It has Shah Rukh Khan, Deepa Sahi, Raj Babbar, Farooq Shaikh, Paresh Rawal, Raghuveer Yadav and many others.

This movie had seven songs (including one multiple version song) penned by Gulzar. Music for this movie is composed by Hridaynath Mangeshkar, and Hridaynath Mangeshkar, Kumar Sanu and Lata Mangeshkar have given their voices to the songs in this movie. As mentioned above all songs in this movie are very nice and I like them very much. I had watched this movie then when it was released in 1993.

Today’ song is sung by Pandit Hridaynath Mangeshkar. A female voice accompanies him in this song. Although not credited, I think the voice is of S. Janaki. I request other listeners to please comment on this guess.

Incidentally, I was thinking to introduce this movie for Gulzar Saab’s birth anniversary in August (with the multiple version song) but could not do so. Later, when I was going through the HFGK Vol-IV (1961-1970), I came across the movie titled ‘Harishchandra Taramati’ (1970), I thought to do a post presenting this movie as I was doing earlier whenever I go through a HFGK Volume for first time and find something interesting. However, I could not write and share the posts then.

Now, though late by couple of days, I do not want to miss this opportunity of presenting this movie on the occasion of ‘birth anniversary’ of Pandit Hridaynath Mangeshkar. Hence, belatedly though wishing Pandit ji a ‘very Happy Birthday’ and a ‘healthy-peaceful-musical’ life ahead I wish to present this song sung by him.

I hope you will like and enjoy this song …

# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 74# Remembering Kishore Kumar on his Remembrance Day #
———————————————————————-

Today (13th October’2018) is the 31th Remembrance Day of – singer, actor, director, producer, lyricist, music director, writer – and our ‘most beloved and versatile genius’ Kishore Kumar.

I had planned a write-up for this occassion several months back and had even started work on it but it kept getting delayed for various reasons. My recent travel to India and the work load after getting back to work also prevented me from finalizing that write up.

Yesterday I browsed through the list of Kishore Kumar songs earlier shared by me to Atul ji and still to be posted. I found that many of these songs are yet to be posted on the blog. Despite this list, I was not able to pick the song to cover on this occasion.

Whole day yesterday(12 october 2018),I was just thinking and it was looking like I may not be able to send a song at all for this occasion. But how can I miss this occasion without a song …

Finally, I turned to my list of ‘songs that bring back memories’ which I had compiled in 2014 for one of my write up on the blog, to find if any Kishore Kumar songs in that list were yet to be covered in the blog.

I found many such songs in this list that are still to make it on the blog. From these many songs I selected today’s song as my presentation on this occasion here…

This song is from the movie ‘Ram Bharose-1977’ …

I had not watched this movie in those years and even till now so I cannot write much about this movie.
However, this song somehow has been stuck up in my mind and I like it very much, may be because of its tune and singing of it by Kishore Kumar. Or May be because of its frequently heard on the loud speakers and radio I guess.
I think it’s a nice hummable song 😊

I watched the video of this song only now during the preparation of this post and I think this song is better heard than to watch 😊

‘Ram Bharose-1977’ (alias ‘God’s Own Man’) was directed by Anand Sagar for ‘Sagar Art (International) Films, Bombay’ and Ramanand Sagar.
It was produced by Subhash Sagar.

Star cast of this movie includes Randhir Kapoor, Rekha, Amjad Khan, Dara Singh, Keshto Mukherjee, Kanan Kaushal, Madan Puri, Nazir Hussain and Sujit Kumar. It also had Raza Murad, Tom Alter, Shailesh Kumar, Jagirdar, Jagdish Raj, Chaman Puri, Master Baboo, Javed Khan, Shiv Raj, Sole, Shahid Bijnori, Ram Murthy, Deepak Raj and Shetty.
Editing for this movie was done by Lachmandass. Dialogues of this movie were written by (Late) Krishan Chander. This movie was written by Moti Sagar.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 21.04.1977.

There were Six songs in this movie composed by Ravindra Jain. Hasrat Jaipuri, Ravindra Jain, Tajdar Taj and Dev Kohli were the lyricist for this movie. Asha Bhonsle, Narinder Chanchal, Kishore Kumar and Mohd Rafi gave their voices to the songs of this movie.

Going by the list of the songs of this movie in HFGK the other song I am familiar with is ‘Chal Chal Re Kathmandu’. 🙂

Today’s song is the first song from this movie to appear on the blog… and ‘Raam Bharose-1977’ is thus making a debut on the blog.

I have noted the lyrics as per the longer audio version having three stanzas, whereas the video link I find is having two stanzas only.

Let us now enjoy today’s song sung by Kishore Kumar which is composed by and written by Ravindra Jain …

Raam se badaa Raam ka naam …Banaaye sabke bigde kaam …

(PS :- Incidentally after few days we are going to celebrate ‘Vijay Dashmi’ and remembering Lord Shri Raam, my best wishes to all in advance )

# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 73 # Aaayo aayo Navratri tyohaar #
———————————————————————-

Season’s greetings and best wishes to all for the Navratri Festival starting today (10 october 2018)!!!

I have mentioned in a few of my earlier write-ups that festivals too bring back many memories and they in turn bring back memories of songs which we have heard years before… in my case ‘years before’ generally means ‘in my childhood days or in those years when I was growing’ 🙂

Today’s song is one such song which normally comes to my mind during celebration of the ‘Navratri festival’ every year. I was under impression that this song must have been posted on the blog earlier, however much to my surprise, this song is mot yet covered till now. And that gives me this opportunity to share this song today on the blog.

I vaguely remember that in our colony where we were staying then (for me after my birth in 1968 to 1984 when I was in eleventh standard :)) during Navratri Festival or Durga Pooja Festival the Durga Pooja Idol would be worshipped in the Colony Club or special ‘pandals’ arranged near the ‘Club Building’ and the ‘Stage’ (meant for the various programs held during the festival). However, unlike the ‘Ganpati Festival’ during which various ‘cultural programs’ would be held, during ‘Navratri’ it was mostly the staging of ‘Ramleela’ for nine/ten days.

I do not have any more special memories except a few songs that were played on the loud speakers and the “Ramleela” which I vaguely remember. Ttoday’s song is one such song that was frequently played on loud speakers during this festival and had been lying dormant in my memories since then.

The song that I am going to present today is from the ‘1971’ movie ‘Johar Mehmood in Hong Kong’.
Going by the date of passing of this movie by the Censor Board I was almost three years old then, when the movie was released. Johar whenever he combined with Mehmood in movies and Mehmood specially for his movies were always a point of discussion among the elders in the family. I remember watching ‘Johar Mehmood in Goa’ and ‘Johar Mehmood in Hong Kong’ with my Uncles. I do not remember if I also watched ‘Johar Mehmood in Kashmir’. These movies had good songs or good entertaining songs, so the songs were also not easily forgettable given their performances on these songs.

“Johar Mehmood in Hongkong” (1971) was produced by Madan Chopra and K.Z. Sheth. It was directed by S.A. Akbar.

It was M.O. Bawazir’s presentation for Mahesh Ashish.

The movie had I.S. Johar, Mehmood, Sonia Sahni, Aruna Irani, Tiwari, Kamal Kapoor, Tuntun, Manorama, Madhumati, Haroon, and Pran. Agha, Mukri, Jr. Mehmood, Polson, Shaikh, B.B. Bhalla, Raj Kishore, Khairati, Murad appear as Guest Artistes in this movie.

This movie was written by I.S. Johar who also wrote the screenplay and dialogues for this movie. Vithal Bankar was the editor for this movie.

Music for this movie was composed by Kalyanji Anandji who were assisted by Babla and where Parte was the arranger and Frank Fernand the Conductor.
There were Six songs in this movie penned by Qamar Jalalabadi (four songs) and two songs are jointly credited to Qamar Jalalabadi and Indeevar (as per HFGK).

Asha Bhonsle, Mohd Rafi, Mukesh, Shamshad Begam, Manna Dey and Usha Timothi gave their voices to the songs in this movie.
As per HFGK Lakshmi Shankar, Usha Khanna and Usha Mangeshkar’s voice has been in one song each, however their names are not mentioned in the titles of this movie (available on YT).

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 04.01.1971.

So far two songs from this movie have been posted on the blog. Today’s song is the third song from this movie to appear on the blog.

Today’s song happens during the ‘Navratri Celebrations’ which all ‘Hindustanis’ living in Hong Kong celebrate every year and send the ‘Garba matka’ to India. Our heroes Mahesh and Ramesh (readers can easily guess who is Mahesh and who is Ramesh) who successfully flee away from jail with other accomplices after giving ‘Jamal ghota’ to Kamal Kapoor, Pran & Co and reach Murad (who is head of the Indian Embassy in the movie I guess) with the ‘secret formula’. Murad advices them that the formula can be easily sent to India in this ‘matka’.

‘Ambe maiyya’ ab hamaari aur hamaare desh ki raksha tere haath hai, desh ke drohi e pujaariyon ko Bharat bhejne se pehle hi khatm kar dena chahte hai, magar Ambe maiyya agar Ramesh aur Mahesh khatm ho jaayen to tu apni chhah bhujaaon se chhah Ramesh aur Mahesh paida kar ke desh ke drohiyon ko chakkar mein daal dena.
Jai Ho …

That is what Ramesh praises to Ambe Maa before the song …

And that is why we have this patriotic garba and seeking the blessings of the goddess to save the mother land and our country …

The movie ends with this song on a happy note where the enemies die their own death and our heroes board the flight for India dancing and enjoying with the ‘secret formula’ in the ‘Garba Pot’.

From today the auspicious festival starts all over India. In Gujarat especially the excitement and preparations for the festival had already begun much earlier when I was there. The ‘garba and dandia’ bhajans and songs had already started playing on in shops, restaurants and public places where the celebrations were to be held.

I had wiitnessed all that during my brief two weeks stay in Gujarat. I have returned back to my work place as per planning and had to travel on Sunday and reaching my destination on this Monday evening >:)I am missing all that excitement a lot now 🙂

Today’s song is sung by Mohd Rafi and Mukesh. And since it involved Singer Mukesh I thought I should consult our Mahesh ji if I can do write-up with this song and he immediately responded that I can ‘go ahead’, thanks to Mahesh ji.

I also take this opportunity to wishing all a very ‘Happy Navratri Festival’ and may it be peaceful and enjoying for all and may the Goddess blessed us all with her blessings and gives us energy to do good for all and fight the evil within and around us …

Let us now enjoy this song composed by Kalyanji Anandji and sung by Mohd Rafi and Mukesh …

Today we remember the great son this soil Sardar Bhagat Singh (28th September 1907 – 23rd March 1931), on his birth anniversary.

We remember him for his bravery, courage, determination and supreme sacrifice made for a cause of the people, the people of this country.

He laid down his life at a young age of only 23 years, 5 months, and 25 days. He could have surrendered to the British and chosen a leisurely life enjoying the benefits and luxuries showered by the Britishers on him, had he requested to forgive him as proposed by them. However instead of choosing ‘the life of slavery’ he chose to dedicate his life for the ‘noblest cause – the freedom of his Motherland’ from the Britishers.

He will remain the inspiration for many as long as humanity exists and people read about him and realize what Bhagat Singh was and how great was he to have done so much in one single life of only 23 years.

I have earlier presented my thoughts while presenting the songs ‘Pagdi Sambhaal Jatta’ and ‘Vekho Loko Khidan To Pehlon’. Whatever will be written about him to remember him and his thoughts, is very less in comparison to the legacy he has left for us. And I am sure as the coming generations read about him will find his thoughts still relevant in terms of what his dreams of ‘true freedom’ for India was and what we have achieved after getting our ‘freedom’ – and they will find that yes, we have still miles to go to build this nation in the pursuit of those dreams.

As I have mentioned earlier in my posts the year 2002 was a special year as in that year there were as many as three movies released on the life of Bhagat Singh.

  • 23rd March 1931 Shaheed
  • The Legend Of Bhagat Singh
  • Shaheed-E-Azam

While “23rd March 1931 Shaheed” and “The Legend Of Bhagat Singh” were released on the same date the other movie “Shaheed-E-Azam” was delayed and was released at a later date.

I will not go into which one amongst them was better than the other. The important thing is that they were made on the life of Bhagat Singh and to make people aware of his true story (may be with a little or more filmy touch).

Today I present a song from the Rajkumar Santoshi directed ‘The Legend of Bhagat Singh-2002’. This movie was produced by Kumar Taurani and Ramesh Taurani (of TIPS). It had the star cast of Ajay Devgan, Sushant Singh, D. Santosh, Akhilendra Mihsra, Raj Babbar, Farida Jalal, Amrita Rao, Mukesh Tiwari, Surendra Rajan, Saurabh Dubey, Kenny Desai, Sitaram Panchal, Bhaskar Chatterjee, Sunil Grover and others.

The screenplay was written by Rajkumar Santoshi, Piyush Mishra and Anjum Rajabali. It was edited by VN Mayekar. Songs for this movie were penned by Sameer and music was composed by AR Rehman.

All songs of this movie composed by AR Rehman are very very good and I liked them as they fill us with patriotic fervour and with a poignant touch, yet making us thoughtful on the life and times of the martyrs and their feelings for their motherland.

Today’s song is in two parts and is sung by AR Rehman and Sukhwinder Singh.

Let us listen to this wonderful song now …

Desh Mere Desh Mere Meri Jaan Hai Tu …

# Superstar Child Artist – Jr. Mehmood # 4
————————————————–
(Rafi Sings for Jr. Mehmood # 3)
————————————-
Greetings to all for the ongoing ‘Ganesh Festival’…!!!

I have many fond memories of ‘Ganpati Utsav’ being held in our colony premises and the ‘various cultural programs’ held during the ‘ten-day’ festival.

For us children then, the main attractions were ‘Orchestras’, ‘Dramas’ and a ‘movie’ if at all it could be arranged and screened in open ground and where we used to watch it from either side of the screen.:)

Among the other programs like ‘orchestra’ and ‘drama’ which would be performed by artists coming from different locations there was also a ‘drama’ and ‘cultural program’ by artists from our colony and students from schools. I was always a part of the ‘drama’ team of juniors as a ‘performer’ and also was a part of the ‘seniors’ for ‘prompting’ behind the stage if some artist forgot the ‘dialogues’. My voice was suitable for that purpose at that time. 🙂

That reminds me of one of my friends who used to do mimicry of Mehmood and Junior Mehmood on stage during such programs. And that also reminds me of ‘the musical nights being held that time with some special star also performing therein’. But, since such programs would be held at the city about 25/30 kms from the place we were staying then, it was not possible for us children to attend such programs.

Junior Mehmood was among the ‘star performer’ in those years and that reminder bring us to this fourth article in the series of articles covering songs performed by or picturized on Junior Mehmood and lip synced by him on screen in Hindi Movies.

Initially I started this series discussing the songs sung by Rafi Saab for Junior Mehmood and the following two songs sung by Rafi Saab for Junior Mehmood have been discussed earlier;

1) Lagey koi lottery koi jackpot lagey (Rivaaz)(1972)

2) Na Koi Paisa Na Ilm Banaao Bambai Mein Film (Bansi Birju) (1972)

Thereafter we extended this series to cover the songs sung by other singers (mainly female singers, I think so 🙂 ) for Junior Mehmood. And those songs which are yet to be discussed on the blog.

Thus, we have the following song as the third post in this series which was posted on 15th November, 2017;

3) Mera Naam Hai Mehmood.

Today’s song is from the movie ‘Tanhaai-1972’.

‘Tanhaai-1972’ was ‘S.B. Films’ presentation, directed by Jagdish Nirula for ‘Chitrashala, Bombay’. This film was produced by S.I. Shivadasani.

It had Rehana Sultan, Anil Dhawan, Shatrughan Sinha, Jagdev, Lakshmi Chhaya, Iftekhar, Poornima, Dulia, Randhir, Baby Chintu, Lalita Kumari, Jankidas, Moolchand, Arpana, Master Shahid, Jagdish Raj, Kirti, Madhu, Jery, Bhola
And Mehmood Junior.

The movie introduced Ashok Khanna.

Story & Screenplay of this film was by Sadhram Sapru. Its dialogues were written by Qamar Jalalabadi. Editing for this movie was done by Govind Dalwadi.

Its music was composed by Usha Khanna and the four songs of this film were penned by Asad Bhopali – three songs and Amanullah Khan Aman – one song.

The film had three solo songs- two by Asha Bhonsle, one by Kishore Kumar which has already been discussed here, and one song sung by Mohd Rafi, Usha Khanna (and Junior Mehmood (as per HFGK), however the titles of this movie did not mention the name of Junior Mehmood under ‘Playback’.

The film was passed by Censor Board on 23rd October’1972.

As per the filmography of Jr. Mehmood available on various sources on the internet he acted in many movies since his first release to this movie “Tanhaai-1972”.
However, these sources where his filmography has been mentioned does not mention the name of this movie ‘Tanhaai-1972’ in their list. (So, the complete list of his movies/filmography needs to checked and authenticated to have accurate number of movies if we need to discuss them year wise.)

Also, till the release of this movie “Tanhaai-1972” Junior Mehmood was a part of many movies which were successful at the box office and he was seen in many Rajesh Khanna movies like ‘Do Raaste-1969’, ‘Aan Milo Sajna-1970’, ‘Kati Patang-1970’, ‘Haathi Mere Saathi-1971’, ‘Chhoti Bahu-1971’, ‘Dil Daulat Duniya-1972’ and other movies.

I had mentioned in my earlier post and many of us are aware of that Junior Mehmood shot to fame from the ‘1968 movie – Brahmachari’ where he performed on Mehmood’s famous ‘ham kaale hain to kya huaa dilwaale hain’ from ‘Gumnaam-1965’’.

He repeats once again performing on Mehmood’s famous ‘mehbooba mehbooba bana leo mujhe dulha’ from ‘Saadhu Aur Shaitaan-1968’ in the movie ‘Johar Mehmood in Hong Kong-1971’ where on screen he performs in the presence of his guru Mehmood and I.S.Johar. (Peevesie’s Mom ji have recently discussed this song from ‘Saadhu Aur Shaitaan-1968’ on the blog).

Mehmood Fans and moviegoers are well aware of Mehmood’s – ‘Kapoor’s three generation act- Prithviraj, Raj and Randhir, in the song ‘Ye kaisa aayaa zamaanaa…’, in the movie ‘Hamjoli-1970’.

Surprisingly this song is yet to be posted on the blog. (may be Mehmood fans in the group are aware and want to give us a surprise 🙂 )

Junior Mehmood tried to repeat a similar act in the song ‘birhaa ki rain’ which is being presented here today.

Taking inspiration from the above song from ‘Hamjoli-1970’ and continuing his ‘genius’ further, and in fact going a step further of his Guru Mehmood, Junior Mehmood did this ‘four roles’ (additionally enacting a female artist, Aruna Irani, I guess…) act in today’s song.

Initially I had planned this song post to be shared in Oct’15 and it was then that the first draft of this article was prepared, however later it got delayed and the song from the movie ‘Baalak-1969’ was posted.

I have not watched this movie ‘Tanhaai-1972’, however our beloved Raja Saab had mentioned of watching this movie in his post presenting the first song from this movie – ‘saawan mein kahin aag na lag jaaye chaman ko’ on the blog.

Let us now enjoy today’s song …

#the Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
————————————————————
# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 72 #
#Shor Mach Gayaa Shor… Dekho Aaya Maakhanchor#
———————————————————————-

Here is wishing all a very Happy Janmashtami Festival and May god shower his love and blessings for all …

As I had said in one of my earlier articles that Seasons and Festivals also trigger some musical memories, and we already have many songs for such occasions.

Songs that bring back memories…

I have very fond memories of celebrations of Janmashtami in our colony we were staying then when I was growing.

I remember that bhajans/songs would be played on loud speakers since morning and among the many topical (Hindi/Marathi)songs played, the following songs associated with this festival got permanently engraved in my mind:-

Kanhaiyya kanhaiyaa tujhe aana padega (Maalik- 1972)
Shor march gayaa shor dekho aaya maakhan chor (Badlaa-1974)
Krishna Krishna bolo Krishna (Naya Din Nayi Raat-1974)
Govind bolo hari Gopal bolo (chhup chhup Meera roye…- Johny Mera Naam-1970)

Songs/bhajans would start since morning. That would be regularly interrupted by announcements about timings of ‘Pooja’ and ‘Prasad’ so that nobody missed them. 🙂

Then people would also be informed about the ‘Dahi Handi’ programme to be held near the Temple Complex which was an important part of this festival.

We children would eagerly wait to watch the ‘matki-phod’ and enjoy the excitement and also arranging similar ‘dahi handis’ on a ‘smaller’ or ‘very smaller’ 🙂 (if we compared it now) scale around our quarters.

And, of course, for us children the other main attraction was the ‘gopal kaala’ (Prasad specially prepared on the occasion of Janmashtami.

It was very exciting and thrilling experience to watch the seniors participating in the ‘Dahi Handi’ then. The excitement and thrill is still there even today when the programmes are held around every Janmashtami or watching the happenings in news or live on TV nowadays.

(And so when I get connected with this blog I had shared all these songs in 2012 itself, except the one from ‘Johny Mera Naam-1970’ which was already there posted on 30.06.2012.

The song from ‘Naya Din Nayi Raat-1974’ was posted on 05.09.2015, and I hope to present the remaining one from ‘Maalik-1972’ too on the blog, in future…

As I said may be there were other filmy/non-filmy songs and bhajans. But the above songs continue to grow with me and are pure nostalgia for me.
Today’s song that I am presenting herewith is full of this excitement and captures the joy and thrill in right spirit of the ‘Dahi handi’ or ‘matki fod’ during the celebration of ‘Janmashtami’ …

This song is from the 1974 movie ‘Badlaa’.

‘Badlaa-1974’ was produced by R.C. Kumar for ‘Century Films, Bombay’. It was directed by Vijay, who also wrote the Story of this movie. It had Shatrughan Sinha, Moushumi Chatterjee, Ajit, Johny Walker, supported by Padma Khanna, Alka, Shetty, Mohan Choti, Maruti, Bhagwan, Keshav Rana, Ram Mohan, Sabina, Mohan Sherry, Kamal Deep, Mac Mohan, V. Gopal, Johny Bakshi, Desh, C.S. Dubey and Mehmood.

Nirupa Roy, Arun Irani, Anwar Hussain, Paintal, Sujit Kumar, Shyama, Madan Puri, Harindranath Chattopadhyay, Iftikhar, Sudhir, Raj Mehra, Randhir, Jayshree T, Meena T, Shefali and Kajal make a guest appearance in this movie.

Screenplay for this movie was written by Jagdish Kanwal and Vijay. Jagdish Kanwal also wrote the dialogues of this movie. Editing for this movie was done by S. Chakravarty who was assisted by Herman Topno.

This movie had five songs penned by Anand Bakshi and composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar and Minoo Puroshottam gave their voices to the songs in this movie.

This movie was released with restricted viewing (A certificate) and passed by Censor Board on 07.03.1974.

I had not watched this movie so cannot say much about this movie and its performance at the box office then. I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on the movie and its songs.

The picturization of this today’s song seems to be inspired by the picturization of the ‘iconic govinda song’ ‘Govinda aala re aala …zara matki sambhaal brijbaalaa’.

This song was shot by Director Manmohan Desai on the streets of Bombay. This very popular song was at rank 31 in the annual ‘Binaca Geetmala’ of that year in 1963.

The next Janmashtmi song that was created after the song under discussion was from ‘Khuddaar’ in 1982 – ‘mach gayaa shor saari nagri re’ sung by Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar. Though it was popular that time it didn’t make to the annual list of ‘Binaca Geetmala’. However two other songs from the same movie were there in the annual list of ‘Binaca Geetmala’ and one of them ‘angrezi mein kehte hain ke’ was at number one.
I was under the impression that this song ‘mach gayaa shor saari nagri re’ has already been posted on the blog, however this is yet to be posted.

That brings us to the today’s song which stood at 22 in the annual list of ‘Binaca Geetmala’ of that year in 1974.

The instrumental musical interludes played in between this song will remind listeners the other song composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal – ‘shaadi banaane ko Keshto chalaa’ from ‘Chaacha Bhatija -1977’

Let us now enjoy this wonderful song (may be forgotten now) and celebrate ‘Janmashtami’ reminding ourselves of the many aspects of Lord Krishna …

[Editor’s note-Lyrics of this song was sent by Prakashchandra as well long long ago]
