#the Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
————————————————————
# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 67#
———————————————–——————–

On our blog we have a ‘category’ of ‘songs excluded from movie’, and so far, seventy-nine songs have been posted/included in this category of songs. Today I present a song from the movie ‘Kaalaa Pathhar’ (1979), which belongs to this category.

I vaguely remember to have watched this movie in theatre when I must be 11/12 years old. Thereafter just six-seven years back I got its DVD from an online store to enjoy the movie again and revive the nostalgia. But, I was aware of the today’s song many years before, or exactly since 1991 when I got recorded this movie’s songs from the LP record, for my choice compilation of ‘Daag-Deewaar-Kaalaa Pathhar’ songs in a 90 min cassette.

‘Kaalaa Patthar’ was directed by Yash Chopra for his home productions Yashraj Films, Bombay. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 09.08.1979.

Its cast holds a ‘galaxy of stars’ which includes Shashi Kapoor, Rakhi Gulzar, Amitabh Bachchan, Shatrughan Sinha, Neetu Singh, Parveen Babi, Prem Chopra, Parikshit Sahni, Romesh Sharma and Poonam Dhillon (in special appearance), Manmohan Krishna, Madan Puri, Iftekhar, Satyen Kappu, Yunus Parvez, Geeta Siddharth, Gautam Sarin, Sharat Saxena, Mac Mohan, Sudesh Mahaan, Sudhir Dalvi, Sudha Chopra, Harish, Mohan Sheri, Vikas Anand, Jagdish Raj, Suresh Oberoi, Prem Sagar, Pardesi, Nazeer Kashmiri, Ashok Razdan and many others.

This movie has six songs, penned by Sahir Ludhianvi and composed by Rajesh Roshan. Interesting to note that the background music for this movie is by Salil Chaudhary. Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Mahendra Kapoor, Mohd Rafi, Pamela Chopra, S.K. Mahan, and Usha Mangeshkar have given their voices to the songs in this movie.

So far, three songs from this movie have been posted on the blog, and the song being presented today is the fourth song from this movie to appear on our blog. The previous posted song of this movie appeared on the blog on 24.05.2012. Wow. . . six years wait to get to the next song. 🙂

Today’s song is written by Sahir Ludhianvi and thus this is the third song of Sahir Ludhianvi which I am able to share here under the category of ‘songs excluded from movie’, the earlier two being, Kya Tum Wahi Ho – from ‘Mann Ki Aankhen’ (1970) and Ja Ri Behna Jaa Tu Apne Ghar Ja from ‘Trishul’ (1978).

The other Sahir songs which were excluded from movies, and which have been posted on the blog so far are also listed here – Rut Phire Par Din Hamaare – from ‘Pyaasa’ (1957), Yoon Hi Dil Ne Chaaha Tha Rona Rulaanaa – from ‘Dil Hi To Hai’ (1963) and Saajan Bin Neend Naa Aawe – from ‘Munimji’ (1955).

HFGK Vol- V doesn’t mention anything about ‘exclusion’ of this song from the movie. I would request knowledgeable readers to share information if any they have about this song please.

Let us now enjoy the today’s song, which I do like very much. 🙂

Mujhe pyaar ka tohfa de ke. . .

Song – Mujhe Pyaar Ka Tohfa De Ke (Kaala Pathhar) (1979) Singer – Usha Mangeshkar, Mohammed Rafi, Lyrics – Sahir Ludhianvi, MD – Rajesh Roshan

Lyrics

mujhe pyaar ka tohfa de ke
tapti baahon mein leke
mujhe pyaar ka tohfa de ke
tapti baahon mein le ke
meri har saans mein pyaas jagaa di
tumne ae kya kiya

he ae

tumne itna uksaaya
dil roke ruk na paaya
tumne itna uksaaya
dil roke ruk na paaya
mere ehsaas mein aag lagaa di
tumne kya kiya

ek chhed thhi wo yunhi si
tum jisko haqeeqat samjhe
ae ae ae ae
jab chhed na thhamne paayi
ham usko mohabbat samjhe
ho o
o o
us chhed ke sadke jaayen
jis chhed se tumko paayen
us chhed ke sadke jaayen
jis chhed se tumko paayen
zaraa si chhed ne baat banaa di
tumne ae kya kiya

dil ik din to jaana thhaa
hamne socha jaane do
ho o o
o o
haaye
is dil ko thhaam ke rakkho
itna na lehraane do
o o
o o
ye dil kab lehraata thha
har ik se katraata thha
ye dil kab lehraata thha
har ik se katraata thha
tumhi ne mel ki raah sujhaa di
tumne kya kiya

o ho ho ho ho
aa aa aa aa
o o o o
aa aa aa aa aa

thhamne do meri dhadkan
aisi bhi kya wahshat hai
ae ae ae ae
hamne apni keh di hai
tum bolo kya niyat hai
ho o
o o
bolun to kaise bolun
dil apna kaise kholun
bolun to kaise bolun
dil apna kaise kholun
mere hothon pe mohar lagaa di
tumne kya kiya

mujhe pyaar ka tohfa de ke
tapti baahon mein le ke
mujhe pyaar ka tohfa de ke
tapti baahon mein le ke
meri har saans mein pyaas jagaa di
tumne ae kya kiya

he ae ae

tumne itna uksaaya
dil roke ruk na paaya
tumne itna uksaaya
dil roke ruk na paaya
mere ehsaas mein aag lagaa di
tumne kya kiya

#the Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
————————————————————
# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 66# Singer – Mukesh
———————————————–——————–

Just few days back I came across this song that I am presenting today. After listening to it I was feeling like maybe I had heard it on ‘radio’ many many years back. When I listened to it once I just kept listening to it again and again and with every new day this song is growing on me, on and on. The song is from the 1978 movie ‘Pal Do Pal Ka Saath’ and it is sung by Mukesh ji.

‘Pal Do Pal Ka Saath’ was directed by BR Ishara for Kaveri Films, Bombay. The cast of actors includes Shekhar Kapoor, Rama Vij, Shamli (New Discovery), Asit Sen, Paintal, Johny Whisky, Aarti, Tiger, Mishri Lal, Mohammad Ali, Amal Sen, Narayan Gwalani, Hameed, Sitaram, Jasbir, Prakash Joshi, Vijay Nangia, Bhaiyalal Sharma, Kashi Prasad Chaurasia and others.

This movie has four songs penned by Naqsh Lyallpuri, Yogesh, Balkavi Bairagi and Dev Kohli. Music for this movie is composed by Shyam Saagar. One song from this movie had been posted on the blog earlier in 2014 i.e. four years back and it was introduced by Sudhir ji – ‘Chupke Se Peechhe Se Aa Ke’ sung by Rafi Saab and lyrics of this song are by Dev Kohli.

As mentioned by Sudhir ji in his post this movie seems to be an ‘obscure movie’ though it contains ‘gems of songs’ (‘veritable gems’ as Sudhir ji has mentioned in his post) as we can say for the earlier song and the today’s song after listening to them. I don’t remember to have heard about this movie earlier and not gone through its information before. It was only after listening to the today’s song that I searched for its details in HFGK Vol V and also read the earlier post on the blog. This movie was passed by censor board on 07.04.1978.

Almost forty years have passed since the movie and its music had been created, however listening to its songs revives the memories of the music of those years and Mukesh ji’s singing of the many other songs for Yogesh ji. Yes, today’s song is penned by Yogesh.

Since the movie was an obscure movie I think its songs were also forgotten easily. I am not able to locate online, the other two songs of this film. As per Geet Kosh, these are solo songs in the voices of Asha Bhosle and Manna Dey. We have to search for them and need to bring them here for our listening pleasure. Till then let us listen to this wonderful composition of Shyam Saagar and savour the magic Yogesh ji’s words and Mukesh ji’s singing…

Only the audio of this song is available as of now. I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie and its songs please.

Song – Anuraagi Mann Sab Kuchh Seh Le (Pal Do Pal Ka Saath) (1978) Singer – Mukesh, Lyrics – Yogesh, MD – Shyam Saagar

Lyrics

anuraagi mann sab kuchh sah le
anuraagi mann sab kuchh sah le
har uljhan mein
hans ke tu rah le
anuraagi mann sab kuchh sah le

ik sang tera
parichay gehra
janam janam ka ye naata re
ik sudh kho kar
besudh ho kar
geet tumhaare hi gaata re
do chehron ka tu ik darpan
anuraagi mann sab kuchh sah le

mita’ti nahin hai prem ki rekha
toofaanon ke bhi aane se
tripti adhoori
rah jaati hai
saagar ko bhi
paa jaane se
ho na ho poora tera samarpan
anuraagi mann . . .
har uljhan mein
hans ke tu rah le
anuraagi mann sab kuchh sah le

#the Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
————————————————————
# The Special Voices of the decade – 3 # Jaspal Singh #
———————————————–———————————–

Welcome all to the third article in this series.

So far, we have the following two articles posted earlier on this blog under this series, where we are discussing the ‘special voices of the seventies’ and the nostalgia and memories associated with the songs of these ‘special voices’ from Hindi Movies.

‘Maa ne kahaa thhaa o betaa’
‘Haseen haseen waadiyon o’

When I had decided to start this series, my plan was to post one article per month under this series. However, later I thought it was better to combine it with the anniversaries of the Singers if it too falls in the same month of my writing the article.

The song and the ‘voice’ of today was supposed to be covered to mark the end of this series, however there was a good development in the first week of this month (March’2018) which delayed this post and finally it is here today.

The voice that I am presenting today is a ‘’very very special’ and ‘nostalgic’ voice for me.
I can feel the fragrance of the soil of this great land – our country, the purity of green lush fields, a big river flowing with its natural beauty, a small beautiful remote village in the rural part of our country – India, the diversity of our culture and the sweetness of the dialects spoken in our country. In all of its way this voice takes me back to ‘my roots and my soil’ if I think I am able to correctly mention the feelings otherwise the feelings just cannot be expressed in words.

Just listen to this song ‘dharti meri maata pitaa aasmaan’ .

And for that matter take this another song ‘geet gaata chal o saathi gungunaata chal’ from this same movie ‘Geet Gaata Chal -1975’

And then this beautiful ‘bhajan’ ‘O o o mangal bhawan amangal haari ee ee’, again from the same movie – ‘Geet Gaata Chal-1975’, its so soothing and so divine that I can keep it listening again and again just going on.

I remember these songs were played on loudspeakers continuously in a marriage function in our neighbourhood in the colony we were staying then.

I was seven and half years then when the movie was released in 1975.

Since then this voice and these songs also were growing on me as I keep growing over the years.
And yes, I had not watched this movie till many years since it was released. I get to watch it, may be on a TV channel, in the later years of nineties I think. But its songs were there with me and they keep growing on me and with me in my journey of life.

I had watched ‘Ankhiyon Ke Jharokhon Se-1978’, that too on TV around mid or later eighties if I remember correctly. But the ‘dohawali’ from this movie is as fresh ever and soothing whenever I listened to it even now.

I had also not watched ‘Saawan Ko Aane Do-1979’ when it was released or even after that for many years, but I had not and will never escape its magical title song because of the voice singing it and the range of this voice and its sweetness and its melody.

(after coming into contact with this blog I got an opportunity to share the following song from this movie sung by Jaspal Singh; ‘gagan ye samjhe chaand sukhi hai’ )

Those were the days when we were watching any movie coming our way and we were getting a chance to watch. But so far as I remember I didn’t get to watched all the above-mentioned movies then where this singer had his songs which were very popular during those years. But I did watch them when I was a grown adult and I think that was the right time for me to watch them.

One such movie is the 1982 movie ‘Nadiyaa Ke Paar’ of which the songs were so popular then. Those couple of years were the ‘most study focussed’ years for us the students (though I was still very casual in my approach and could not understand its seriousness then, which I can realize now  )
Well, coming back to the songs from this movie, all the songs from this movie were very popular then and all of them are my favorites too.

‘Saanchi kahen tore aawan se hamre’
‘Kaun disha mein leke chalaa re batohiyaa’

These songs from this movie and one of the voice i.e. the male voice of these songs is our ‘special voice’ of the ‘decade of seventies’ for this article today …

The voice I am talking about is none other than Jaspal Singh.

***

Jaspal Singh was born on 23rd March 1943 in Amritsar, Punjab. We wish him a belated “Happy Birthday” on this blog today and a healthy and peaceful life ahead!!!

However, yours ‘junior’ sincerely had already wished him personally over phone a ‘very very happy birthday’ and good wishes to him.

How I came to know about his birthdate also happens just by chance.

It so happened that, during my stay at Nagpur I came across this song (of today) which when I listened to it I liked it so much and immediately fall in love with it. I did share it then to Atul ji but for a different occasion.
(However, now I feel that this is the perfect song for me to share with this article here when I am presenting this voice under this series).

At that time, I do also search for a detailed biographic information about him and after getting his contact number from sources on internet I do make him a call and express my gratitude to him for giving us the treasure of many ‘unforgettable songs’ and for his voice being part of our (people like me who were in pre-teens and teens then) growing years. I had also expressed my wish to meet him sometime if I get a chance of it, which he appreciated whole heartedly and also assured that he can share all information about him whatever is possible and if one wants to go through it.

This happened immediately after the November’16 Mumbai Gang out, so I enquired with our respected Shishir ji, if he had interviewed this personality for this blog, which he told me that it is in his future plans.

Well, from the information available on internet then (even now) it came to my notice that none of the sources (which I came across) had mentioned the birthdate of this personality so I was curious to know about it.

Recently when Atul ji ‘Yippeeee’d’ this movie ‘Geet Gaaata Chal -1975’ on the blog and posted couple of the songs sung by Jaspal Singh ji, I thought I should also write up and complete my post under this series.

After a gap of almost one year and half I thought I should call Jaspal Singh ji and try to get this information directly from him. He was very happy that somebody from a long distance (now from Kenya) had called him and was interested to know about him. He readily shared the information to me which also had an interesting ‘thing’ associated with it.

As mentioned above he was born on 23rd March 1943 at Amritsar Punjab. However, on all official records his date of birth had been recorded as 28th March 1943.

(for the information of our readers I would like to share once again that yours ‘junior’ sincerely have already wished him personally on phone on his birthday on 23rd March itself – ‘thanks, and so nice of you’ was what he replied to me)

Jaspal Singh came from Amritsar where his father was having the business of Hotel and their Hotel was once situated just opposite to the famous ‘Golden Temple in Amritsar’ (which was later demolished and was compensated by the government, as mentioned by him in his interview on RSTV-Guftagoo).

Among the five siblings they are four brothers and one sister. (I hope I am correct as per what I can learn from his interview on RSTV-Guftagoo).

Jaspal Singh completed his graduation from Amritsar and later on persuaded LLB from Ghaziabad. However, he was neither interested in business nor doing the ‘advocacy’. His only interest was to sing and become a ‘play back singer’ which his mother and sister supported well.

Jaspal Singh, since his childhood was fond of singing and he was singing in his school and college functions and was popular among his circles in Amritsar and was invited for singing in functions.
He too (like other upcoming singers) was a great fan of Rafi Saab whom he admires a lot and later on he got a chance to sing with Rafi Saab in films which was a great day for him.

His journey to movies and becoming a play back singer was full of hard work and struggle and he succeeded only because he had this talent, passion and instinct to become a play back singer for movies.

It so happened that his Sister got married and was settled in Mumbai (Bombay) in those years. This came like a blessing for young Jaspal Singh who thereafter keep visiting Bombay, initially during the ‘summer vacation’ and thereafter very often to fulfil his ‘dream’ of becoming a ‘playback singer’ for movies.

His Sister knowing about his passion and intentions persuaded her husband to try that Jaspal Singh gets an opportunity to sing in movies.
There continued efforts resulted in Usha Khanna ji giving him his first break for playback singing in the movie ‘Bandish-1968’ where his first recorded song was a solo song ‘dekho logo ye kaisa zamaana sambhalo sambhalo tang libaada’ which went un-noticed.
Usha Khanna ji give him another chance in 1969 to sung in the movie ‘Anjaan Hai Koi’, this time a duet with Mahendra Kapoor which due to its tune and words was somewhat noticed and reach a larger audience.

However, he was still far away from the ‘big’ and ‘hit’ …

In the meantime, given to the pressure by his father to join the family business in Amritsar he keeps visiting Amritsar, but since he was not interested in Business he returns back to Mumbai.
Later on, his father also gives up to his wish and allow him to stay in Mumbai and even bought a ‘flat’ for him in Mumbai which he is still staying in.

Jaspal Singh also started taking lessons from his guruji Mahendrajeet Singh ji who always encouraged him a lot and always supported him and insisted that he should not leave Mumbai and ‘singing’.
As his struggle for singing opportunities and a major break continued Jaspal Singh also too on practicing as lawyer ship with a senior lawyer in Mumbai and started attending the court proceedings.

***
‘Geet Gaata Chal’ …

Luckily, he got a chance to meet Ravindra Jain who also staying in the same locality and who was aware of his singing.

A ‘big break’ was already waiting for Jaspal Singh when Rajshri Productions were looking for a ‘new singer’ for their upcoming new movie starring Sachin.
Ravindra Jain was the music director of this movie and he thought to give Jaspal Singh a chance for singing.
And, after going through the ‘tests’ Jaspal Sing was given a chance to sing ‘dharti meri maata pitaa aasmaan’, which also was his first recorded song for the movie.

The main title song of the movie came to him only after lot of consultations between the producer of the movie Rajkamal Barjatya and the music director Ravindra Jain who was initially reluctant to give him this song, which he thought was the main song of the movie and he thought a new singer would not be able to do justice with it and had it been gone a wrong way would have spoiled the movie and the music of this movie.
Finally, he was called to sing this ‘title song’ of the movie and after recording of that he was also offered the remaining songs of the movie to sing. (one song of the movie viz. Shyam abhimaani o Shyam abhimaani was already recorded earlier in Rafi Saab’s voice)

However, the title song ‘geet gaata chal o saathi gungunaata chal ’sung by Jaspal Singh went on to create a ‘magic’ for him and for the movie and for the ‘history of ‘Hindi film music’ and this song even today after so many years is as fresh as it was when the movie was released.

This was the first major break he got and which opened for him many avenues further, though he mainly sung for Ravindra Jain (I think so, till we arrive at the total statistics of songs sung by him.)

Thereafter he got to sing in many movies mainly for actor Sachin and many of his songs went on to become very popular and they are as fresh as they were then in the minds of the movie goers and HFM lovers.

***
Here it will be interesting to know if he got to sing in movies after ‘Bandish-1968’ and ‘Anjaan Hai Koi-1969’, because his next song was in 1975 for ‘Geet Gaata Chal’.

Well, after ‘Geet Gaata Chal-1975’ he left his ‘practice in lawyership’ and went on to singing in around one hundred fifty movies (to be authenticated).
However tragically or unfortunately for the history of ‘HFM’ the so-called ‘big banners’ didn’t offer him to sing in their productions.
Nevertheless, the songs that he got to sung so far cannot be forgotten and some of them will remain immortal in the memories of HFM lovers.

The song ‘jab jab tu mere saamne aaye’ from ‘Shyam Tere Kitne Naam-1977’ sung for Sachin is his personal favourite.

On this blog I got the opportunity to share few of his songs (few I mentioned above) and viz. ‘yaar dagaa de gaya dulhan ko le gaya’

His active years in singing last till 2009-2010 (as mentioned by him in his interview on RSTV).
By then already HFM had gone many changes and seen many new singers making entry into movies and singing, so naturally Jaspal Singh also got forgotten by Music Directors.

However, given the quantity of songs he sung, and his not so frequent appearing in movie songs credit some keep wondering that ‘where did he vanish?’😊.

On our blog we have so far only fifteen of ‘Jaspal Singh Songs’ posted, so all those who wondered where he was vanished can try to search for his songs also can try to get them posted here 😊 sharing them with their memories associated with his beautiful songs.

From his interview on RSTV (which is also the main source for this article) and as mentioned by Jaspal Singh himself he is living a happy and contented life with his family (wife, a daughter and a son) and continuing with his riyaaz and readings.
He had been doing stage shows as per demand and whenever he got opportunities for that. (the interview was done in 2014 i.e. only four years back).

That brings us to the today’s song being presented here on the blog and the movie it is from …

“Paayal Ki Jhankaar-1980” was directed by Satyen Bose for Ruchi Films, Bombay.

It had Komal Mahuwakar, Alankar, Surinder Kaur (new discovery), Arun Kumar, Shail Chaturvedi, C.S. Dubey, Virendra Gaud, Shrikant Moghe, Anand Joshi, Brijendra Mohan, Pardesi, Master Abhitabh, Deepak, Sudha Shivpuri, Ranjana Sachdev, Bandini, Namrata, Asha Sharma, Rajraani and Nisha.
Master Mayur and Master Sandeep make a guest appearance in this movie.

Music for this movie was composed by Rajkamal and its songs were written by Maya Govind.

This movie had total eleven songs in it and it was passed by Censor Board on 23.08.1980.
Aarti Mukherjee, Alka Yagnik, Anand Kumar C., Jaspal Singh, Purushottam Das Jalota, Sulakshana Pandit and Yesudas gave their voices to the songs of this movie.

Interestingly the song being presented today is the only song sung by Jaspal Singh in this movie and the only male solo too. The other male voices are appearing in duets song only.

Though I had not watched this movie its name was in my vague memories so I had been waiting for sharing of a song of this movie to introduce it on the blog. And it also serves the purpose of bringing ‘movies having same titles’ on the blog.

There was a movie with the same title “Paayal Ki Jhankaar” in 1968 which has already made an entry on the blog.

Today ‘Paayal Ki Jhankaar-1980’ makes a debut on the blog …

Let us now enjoy the today’s song in the unique and amazing voice of Jaspal Singh …
Lyrics are by Maya Govind and music is composed by Raj Kamal ji.

#the Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
—————————————————————
# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 65# Remembering Navin Nischol
———————————————–————————————-

Today (19th March 2018) is the remembrance day of Navin Nischol (11 April 1946 – 19 March 2011).

He will always be remembered for his ‘soft’ and ‘gentle’ acting with his special touch and he will always be remembered whenever Hindi Movies of ‘seventies’ are discussed.

I vaguely recall having watched his movies of 1970s like ‘Dharma’ (1973), ‘Dhund’ (1973), ‘Victoria No. 203’ (1972), ‘Saawan Bhadon’ (1970), in my childhood with my elders. Much Later, when I grew up, I watched his movies of 1980s like ‘The Burning Train’ (1980), ‘Desh Premee’ (1982), ‘Babu’ (1985),’Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman’ (1992), as well as some of his earlier movies like ‘Hanste Zakhm’ (1973) & ‘Buddha Mil Gaya’ (1971). The latest Navin Nischol movie that I watched was ‘Khosla Ka Ghosla’ from 2006, which I liked very much and I have watched it many times since. I cannot forget his role in the famous TV serial ‘Dekh Bhai Dekh’ (1993) which also I liked very much.

I think I had watched ‘Muqaddar Ka Baadshah’ (1990) and ‘Bahaar Aane Tak’ (1990) as well but do not remember much about them now. There are many such other movies too which I watched during this period of 1989 to 1996, but do not remember them. I may not have watched too many of his movies but there are some songs from his movies that have remained with me right since my younger days. I rememeber the songs of ‘Woh Main Nahin’ (1974), which was one of the earlier movies of Navin Nischol and I have not forgotten these songs even though I do not recall having watched the movie.

‘Woh Main Nahin’ was directed by Mohan Sehgal (or Mohan Segal) for Uma Cine Films Pvt. Ltd., Bombay. Mohan Sehgal was also the producer of this movie. The movie had Navin Nischol, Rekha, Rakesh Pandey, Padmini Kapila, Meena Roy, Iftikhar, Krishna Dhawan, Nadira, Dhumal, Sujata, Jagirdar, Manhar Desai, Kamaldeep, Shauqat Azmi, Sadhna Khote, Birbal, V Gopal, Sophia, Chamapuri, Chinnu, Chanda, Vishal Dutt, Ramlal, Bhola, Assi, Master Asif and others. Nazneen and Narendranath make friendly appearances, while Asha Sachdev makes a special appearance. Praveen Nischol was the Chief Asstt Director of this movie. (I think he is the real brother of Navin Nischol). Pratap Dave was the editor for this movie. Ali Raza was the writer of this movie. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 08.10.1974.

This movie had five songs in it composed by Sonik Omi. Lyrics of all the songs were written by Varma Malik. Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar and Mohd Rafi gave their voices to the songs in this movie. Navin Nishcol’s voice has also been credited in two songs as per HFGK.

The movie was based on prominent Marathi writer, poet and playwriter PK Atre, also known as Acharya Atre’s play ‘To Mi Navhech’ which has been regarded as a ‘classic play’ and has been successfully performed for record number of times since its inception in 1962 (it has a separate wiki page here). The main reason that I remember this movie may be because of the discussion amongst the elderly family members about the play ‘To Mi Navhech’.

Today we listen and enjoy a song from this movie which is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Kishore Kumar. Navin Nischol and Asha Sachdev are performing this song on screen where we can see many other artists in the picturization of this song. Let us now enjoy this rocking song from ‘Woh Main Nahin’ – the film makes its debut on our blog today.

#the Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
—————————————————————
# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 64# Singer – Kishore Kumar
———————————————–—————————-

In my opinion, Kishore Kumar’s voice reached a different and special plane altogether during late 1960s as compared to his voice prior to earlier years i.e. pre ‘Padosan'(1968) and ‘Aradhana’ (1969). He retained that “something special” in his voice for the rest of his career. His voice was at its ‘versatile peak’ during this phase of his career.

Kishore Kumar was popularly known as the voice of ‘Rajesh Khanna’ during 1970s, but he was also singing for most other actors, whether they were the established stars of the time or newcomers. Today’s song is one such special song. I became aware of this song only in September 2016.

It was during my stay at Nagpur that I had marked this song for presentation here on the blog. When I checked HFGK for this movie songs, I discovered that this song had two versions viz a ‘happy’ as well as ‘sad’. However, at that time only the sad version of this song was available, so I forwarded the movie link to my friend so that he could make the fast version of the song available in time for Holi of 2017. But somehow it did not materialize.

Later on, due to change in my job location it got further delayed. It was just about five weeks back that I requested our beloved Raja Saab to upload video of this song and he, as he always does, was kind enough to respond to my request and he has uploaded both the video versions of this song. (Thank you, Raja Saab, for the videos of both versions of this song). Meanwhile, I also discovered that audio of the ‘happy’ version was also available on YT.

This is a song celebrating ‘Holi’ – the festival of colors – and thus today on the occasion of ‘Holi’ let us enjoy this song from the ‘1975’ movie ‘Andhera’.

‘Andhera’ was directed by Tulsi Ramsay and Shyam Ramsay for their home production under the banner of Ramsay Films, Bombay. It was produced by F.U. Ramsay who also wrote the story of this movie. The star cast of this movie includes Sameer, Vani Ganpati, Surendra Kumar, Imtiaz, Helen, Satyen Kappu, Krishan Dhawan, Mukri, Dulari, Shekhar Purohit, Kumud Tripathi, Tuntun, Heeralal, Murad, Kukku, Arvind Pandya, Major Anand, Madhu, Habib, Moolchand, Seema Kapoor, Ashoo and others.

Dialogues for this movie were written by Kafeel Azar. Shyam Ramsay was the Chief Assistant Editor and Arjun Ramsay was the Associate Director. Editing was done by Bal Korde. Kumar Ramsay was the Executive Producer for this movie and he also wrote the screenplay of this movie.

This movie has four songs. Lyrics for all these songs are penned by Gulshan Bawra. Music for this movie is composed by Sonik-Omi. All the songs are solo songs; two by Kishore Kumar , and other two by Asha Bhonsle. Today’s song is sung by Kishore Kumar and it has two versions ‘happy’and ‘sad’ (or fast and slow 🙂 ). More than the fast version I like the slow version and its tune grows up on one as one listens to it repeatedly

Let us now enjoy this song!!! With this song, ‘Andhera’ (1975) makes its debut in the blog.

Wishing all readers and members of this blog a very happy, peaceful, safe and colorful Holi 2018 …!!!

#the Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #

—————————————————————
# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 63# Khayyam Saab’s 91st birth anniversary
———————————————–—————————

Today 18th February 2018 (born on 18th February 1927) is the Ninety-first birth anniversary of Mohammed Zahur “Khayyam” Hashmi Saab, better known as Khayyam Saab to all of us.

On this occasion here is a rare song from the movie ‘Meena Kumari Ki Amar Kahaani-1979’. Music of this film was composed by Khayyam Saab.

‘Meena Kumari Ki Amar Kahaani – 1979’ was directed by Sohrab Modi for ‘Shaili Films, Bombay’. It had Dolly (as ‘Meena Kumari’), Bharat Bhushan, Madhu Malini, Meena Irani, Sunita Irani, Sunita Dheer, Twinkle, Jayshree T., Bandini, Jagdeep, Keshto Mukherjee, Ratna, Javed Khan, Bina Baba, Zery, Kedar Sehgal, Baby Parveen, and Sona (as ‘Madhubala’).

Lyrics of this film were by Afzal Shadab (all songs) and Music was composed by Khayyam Saab.

As per information available in HFGK this film had two songs. (However as mentioned in HFGK this film also included some dialogues and songs from some of the films of Meena Kumari viz. Azad’1955, Sharda’1957, Chirag Kahaan Roshni Kahaan’1959, Ghazal’1964, Chandan Ka Palna’1967 and Pakeezah’1971).

This film was based on Meena Kumari’s life and was passed by censor board on 28.11.1979.
I am neither much aware about this movie nor I have watched it, so I can not say much about this movie and its box office performance.
I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie and its songs.

I was quite in dilemma while deciding a song for today’s occasion, because there are still many many beautiful gems composed by Khayyam Saab that are yet to be posted on the blog here.

However, while going through the list of movies for which Khayyam Saab has composed music, I find that this is the only movie from the decade of 1971-1980 that is yet to make an entry on the blog. So today we get introduced to this movie on the blog.

During 1971-1980 we have the following movies of which the music was composed by Khayyam Saab;

Khayyam’s movies of 1971-1980
Name of movie Year
Pyaase Dil 1974
Sankalp 1974
Mutthi Bhar Chawal 1975
Sandhya 1975
Kabhie Kabhie 1976
Shankar Hussain 1977
Trishul 1978
Chambal Ki Kasam 1979
Khaandaan 1979
Meena Kumari Ki Amar Kahaani * 1979
Noorie 1979
Thodisi Bewafai 1980

(* making a debut on the blog today)

Out of the two songs in this movie one song is a solo song sung by Mahendra Kapoor and lip synced by Bharat Bhushan on the screen and being posted here today.
The actresses Dolly and Sona who played the role of Meena Kumari and Madhubala in the film are also seen in the picturization of this song with others.

The other song is a duet sung by Asha Bhonsle and Lata Mangeshkar.

Wishing Khayyam Saab, a ‘Very Happy Birthday’ today and a ‘healthy and peaceful’ life ahead, let us now enjoy this song!!!

Song-Wafaa e ishq mein khoye jahaan milte hain (Meena Kumari Ki Amar Kahaani)(1979) Singer-Mahendra Kapoor, Lyrics-Afzal Shadab, MD-Khayyam

Lyrics

Jo udaatey thhe laakhon ki neendein
Ab wo zere zameen so gaye
Haay mitti ki aagosh mein
Kaise kaise haseen so gaye

Wafaa e ishq mein
Khoye jahaan milte hain
Wafaa e ishq mein
Khoye jahaan milte hain
Bhatakti rooh ke ae ae ae
Bhatakti rooh ke
Aksar nishaan miltey hain aen
Wafaa e ishq mein
Khoye jahaan milte hain

Wo badnaseeb jo
Duniya se naamuraad gaye
Wafaa ke maare huye
De ke apni yaad gaye
Nazar se chhupke
wo hi meharbaan miltey hain
Bhatakti rooh ke ae ae ae
Bhatakti rooh ke
Aksar nishaan miltey hain ae
Wafaa e ishq mein
Khoye jahaan milte hain

Jo baazi haar gaye hain
Yahaan muhabbat mein
Qaraar unko nahin milta
Apni jannat mein
Sukoon e dil ke liye
Bezubaan miltey hain
Bhatakti rooh ke ae ae ae
Bhatakti rooh ke
Aksar nishaan miltey hain ae
Wafaa e ishq mein
Khoye jahaan milte hain

Hawaa mein udtaa huaa
Inka aashiyaana hai ae
Wahaan pe pardanasheenon ka ab
Thhikaana hai ae ae ae
Jahaan galey se zameen aasmaan miltey hain
Bhatakti rooh ke ae ae ae
Bhatakti rooh ke
Aksar nishaan miltey hain ae
Wafaa e ishq mein
Khoye jahaan milte hain

Chhupaa huaa hai koi raaz
Inke aane mein
Ke jaise bhool gaye hon
Ye kuchh zamaane mein
Zameen pe aise kayi raazdaan miltey hain
Bhatakti rooh ke ae ae ae
Bhatakti rooh ke
Aksar nishaan miltey hain ae
Wafaa e ishq mein
Khoye jahaan milte hain
Wafaa e ishq mein
Khoye jahaan milte hain
Wafaa e ishq mein
Khoye jahaan milte hain

While watching our Hindi movies we carry some preconceived images of an actor/actors or actress/actresses based on roles they play in movies. It is quite common for an actor or actresses in Indian movies to get typedcast as an actor suitable only for ‘good’/‘positive’ or ‘bad’/‘negative’roles. So when we watch a movie, we expect an actor to play the same kind of stereotyped role that we have seen him play in the past. To come out of this stereotype successfully is a challenge and very few actors in Hindi film industry have been successful in shaking off their earlier image and being just as successful in their new roles.

Every moviegoer or movie buff has his own likes and dislikes for certain film personalities based on the roles they play on screen. Normally this feeling remains unaltered throughout.

Is it possible for us to “hate” an actor heartily for decades and then warming up to him subsequently and starting to “love” him with the same intensity ?

Yes, it is possible. There was this actor who was disliked and dreaded so much that no parents gave their sons his name for decades ! But when he started doing ‘good’ and ‘positive’ roles on screen we started to cheer for him, we began to dance when he breaks into a ‘song’, and ‘dance’, we ‘shed tears’ when he sacrificed his life doing ‘good’ on screen.

I am talking about Pran Saab, of course.

We can feel the images of ‘characters’ he played, in around ourselves, in our society or rather he transformed those ‘real life’ looking images into ‘reel life’ with superb improvisations through his style and mannerisms.

I have my set of memories associated with the movies he acted in and I am sure many others may also be having so.

And having said all the above I don’t really think that I have to go and mention here all those movies and the ‘roles’ I liked, because it cannot be covered in one article and the space (normally we give to one write up) here.

Pran Kishan Sikand born on 12th February 1920 (12.02.1920 – 12.07.2013) and today we remember him on his anniversary of birth.

He may not be present in his ‘flesh and blood’ around us but he is there ‘immortal’ in his ‘works’, sincere, dedicated, disciplined in his ‘acts’, ‘humble and generous’ in his living and still bent down on his knees and thanking his fans and crediting them all for his ‘success’ and moving us all in tears with his words ‘I bow before you all.’

Pran Saab we love you so much and thank you for all that you have given us!!!

***

The idea of this post came to my mind almost two years back when I broke into humming this song that is being presented today. I thought this song perfectly fits for this post of mine which is being presented today.

The lyrics in ‘Devnagri script’ are provided by my daughter Ashwini which I requested her then, however the post got delayed and hope it will be in time there with our editors at least now.

The other reason that I want to do a post on Pran Saab is the nostalgia and so many memories of his movies which always cherished and particularly of those years, the most happening years of Hindi Cinema – that is the ‘decade of seventies- 1971-1980’.
Of course, he had already been there in movies much before of the Seventies. But still, Seventies is an important decade for him too)

***

And taking it from the dialogue of the movie ‘Anand’ – ‘Anand maraa nahin Anand martein nahin’ I can put –

“Pran martein nahin – Pran amar hain”

जिसने विष पिया बना शंकर
जिसने विष पिया बनी मीरा
जिसने विष पिया बना शंकर
जिसने विष पिया बनी मीरा

Blog Day : 3490 Post No. : 14022

First of all, I have to express my gratitude to this blog once again, it is only because of this blog that am able to share this post here. Though I have already shared many posts earlier, but today the personality I am writing about is of such a great stature that it is my fortune and blessings of this blog that I am able to do this.

Today we remember Ramchandra Narayandutt Dwivedi whom we fondly admire and respect as ‘Kavi Pradeep’ or ‘Rashtra Kavi Pradeep’ on the anniversary of his birth. He was born on 6th February,1915 and passed away on 11th December,1998 leaving behind a great legacy or even I can say a ‘heritage’ – a national heritage of his immortal poems and his ‘voice’.

I am short of words to add an adjective to describe his ‘voice’, because it cannot be expressed in words. It is an altogether a very different experience or rather divine experience to listen the songs sung by him. For that matter I think people like me who were born in end sixties and seventies or may be little later and even extending to the eighties, must have in their childhood heard his voice/songs playing on loud speakers, radio and in the earlier years of TV in India.

I cannot forget “Aao Bachcho Tumhein Dikhaayein“, and “Ae Mere Watan Ke Logo“, one penned and sung by him and other penned by him, which were/are a ‘must’ on every Independence Day and Republic Day. And how rightly he said the value of ‘our hard fought freedom’ when he is talking to the new generation in this song “Hum Laaye Hain Toofaan Se Kishti Nikaal Ke’.

Then there are few songs which we used to listen when we grow up but can only understand their depth after we actually matured as adults. These are the philosophical song like “Dekh Tere Sansaar Ki Haalat“,  “Mukhda Dekh Le Praani“, “Pinjre Ke Panchhi Re“, “Doosron Ka Dukhdaa Door Karne Waale“, “Kabhi Dhoop Kabhi Chhaaon“, “Hum Ne Jag Ki Ajab Tasweer Dekhi“, “Koi Laakh Kare Chaturaayi“. Listening to these and songs sung by him have always given me a great motivation and inspiration other than giving peace to mind whenever I have felt like down with spirits or depressed and struggling with our day to day adversities.

He always wrote and sung with passion, pouring his heart and his feelings into his creations, and thus his songs whether patriotic, devotional or philosophical, when we listen to them, always take us to an altogether different ‘planet’ that is the magic of his words and his voice.

Like the song “Tere Dwaar Khadaa Bhagwaan“, I have never felt tired of listening to this song. I can listen to it many many times in one go. Then his song on the partition of India – “Aaj Ke Insaan Ko Ye Kya Ho Gaya“; one can just imagine the agony in his feelings and the ‘pain’ this ‘poet’ is going through on the degrading human values.

I would like to share here an incident which proves that if one gets a chance to listen to his songs they straight way take to one’s heart and mind forever and even the new generation cannot escape from his ‘passionate’ and ‘inspirational’ voice if they get that right atmosphere around where his songs are listened to. I was at Kota, in Rajasthan at that time in 1988-89. I had bought this compilation of Kavi Pradeep’s songs released by HMV. I presented this to one of my Senior Colleagues who was from Paudi Garhwal. He had a son and a daughter who was around 4-5 years old at that time.

After a gap of around 6-7 years when I was on tour to New Delhi I got a chance to visit this senior of mine and stay with them. As we were discussing his daughter came to me and said ‘Uncle, aap wahi Uncle ho na jinhone hamen Kavi Pradeep ji ki cassette di thi’.

What I want to put here is that if we the citizens of this country nurture good values, of course including the great heritage of our history, arts and culture, and pass them on to new generations, it will be certainly of a great help to instil in them the love for the nation and respect towards the great freedom fighters, soldiers of this country, the country – the land itself and our historical and cultural values.

Hindi movies already are doing great job in the service of nation and national integration. And Kavi Pradeep’s contribution in this cause is simply great and his poetry and songs need to be continuously passed on to the new generation to rouse patriotic values and love for the nation and its great historical heritage.

On this blog we always have this opportunity to share the works of such great persons and their art which they use as a ‘medium’ to reach people and in service of the ‘greater cause’ – ‘the nation’. And we have a long long way to go in this purpose of sharing his poetry /songs that he wrote for Hindi Movies. As per the ‘statistics’ page of this blog, we have till now posted only 167 (I hope this is the latest updated figures) out of the 531 songs he wrote for HFM.

Today I am sharing one of his songs which is written and sung by himself. This song, when I initially sent almost three years ago to Atul ji, I thought was a non-filmy song. As the link available then didn’t mention anything about this song. However, thanks to this book ‘Kavi Pradeep Ka Hindi Sahitya Mein Avdaan’ by Dr. Dinesh Chandra Awasthi which I got few months back and came to know that this song is actually from a ‘recent’ 1983 movie ‘Jai Baba Amarnath’ and not from a yesteryears movie or an NFS.

I like this song very much and it is ‘philosophical’ background song in the movie (as can be seen from the video of this song available now) and in the picturization of this song we can see Vikram Gokhale, Bina and others.

‘Jai Baba Amarnath’ was directed by BR Ishara for ‘King Movies’. It was produced by Badriprasad Joshi. It had Vikram Gokhale, Beena, Mahipal, BM Vyas, Surya Kumar, Anant Marathe, Maheshwari, Master Vikas, Mohan Choti, Meghna, Ratna Bhushan, Nayna Bhatt, Champshi Bhai, Ashalata, Bhagwan, Tun Tun, S Madan, Surekha Rane, Karunakar Pathak, Baiju Raja, Nanak Singh, Lakhan, Amit, Mishrilal, Hangama, Jaya Kaushalya, and Mahesh Desai.

The songs in this movie were sung by Kavi Pradeep, Mahendra Kapoor, Usha Khanna, Suresh Wadkar, Chandrani Mukerjee and Dilraj Kaur. The records were released by ‘Music India’. Sujit Sen and Subramaniam were Assistant Directors for this movie. SA Kadar was the Chief Assistant Director. Dahya Bhai was the Cameraman for this movie. The editing for this movie was done by LD Bhatia. Story of this movie was written by Pandit R Priyadarshi. Kavi Pradeep wrote the songs for this movie and music was composed by Usha Khanna.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 11.01.1983.

I have to confess here that I wished to write a detailed biographical write up (though I am not good in doing it like our senior members and other members) on Kavi Pradeep. I had actually started with it, but could not devote the time required, and so I am presenting a much briefer article about him. But that does not deprive us in enjoying this wonderful creation in his loving memory in our hearts. I will try to write his biographical sketch with more information about the movies he worked for in another article, as possible.

Let us now enjoy this philosophical yet motivational song, which is written and sung by Kavi Pradeep and composed by Usha Khanna. The movie ‘Jai Baba Amarnath’ makes its debut today on our blog.

Song – Udti Chidiya Behta Paani (Jai Baba Amarnath) (1983) Singer – Kavi Pradeep, Lyrics – Kavi Pradeep, MD – Usha Khanna

Lyrics

udti chidiya..aa..aa
behta paani..ee..ee
inki kahaani kisne jaani
udti chidiyaa..aa..aa

chalne waalo suno safar mein
rakhna saavdhani

#the Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
————————————————————
# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 61 # Movies with same titles ‘Haar Jeet’
———————————————–—————————————–

Recently our dear Kamath Saab shared the song ‘Mast Pawan Shaakhen Lehraayen’ from the 1940 movie ‘Haar Jeet’. And seeing that post I immediately recalled sharing one song from the film having the same title – ‘Haar Jeet’ and released in 1972. I thought that a song from this ‘Haar Jeet’ (1972) was already posted on the blog. Or maybe it was discussed in some post or mentioned in comments on the blog.

And very co-incidentally few days before the post of Kamath Saab I was browsing the blog for the movies that I was searching in the ‘list-of-songs-by-movies’ but was unable to locate them. At that time I also searched for this movie ‘Haar Jeet’ (1972), but could not locate it.  Simultaneously I succeeded to locate ‘Chaacha Bhateeja’ (1977), which was recently introduced on the blog. The spelling I was searching with was ‘Chacha Bhatijaa’ (like ‘Chacha Chaudhary’ (1953) and ‘Chacha Zindabad’ (1959)). Then I also found the movie ‘Samaapti’ (1949) which I tried to search with wrong 🙂 options like ‘Sampatti’.

When I could not locate the 1972 ‘Haar Jeet’, I tried to search it with different spelling combinations. But could not succeed. So, I concluded that this movie is yet to make a debut on the blog. And if this post, is passed by our Central Board of Post Certification 😉 this movie is going to make a debut on the blog today. This post and the debut of this movie also serves one of my ‘purpose’ of introducing the ‘movies having same title’.

My last post in this endeavor was on 24 Sep 2016 when I shared the song Ye Pyaar Bada Beimaan Hai from the 1951 movie ‘Saudaagar’. After such a long gap, even I have to ask myself – ‘itney din tum kahaan rahe’ 🙂

On our blog we already have ‘Haar Jeet’ from 1940 and also from 1954. Today this ‘third’ ‘Haar Jeet’ of 1972 makes a debut on the blog. This film is directed by CP Dixit for ‘Prithvi Pictures, Bombay’. It was a social movie. In a footnote, HFGK makes a note that this movie was based on the story of K Balachander’s ‘Thamarai Nenjam’. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 10.04.1972. It has Rehana Sultan, Anil Dhawan, Radha Saluja, Mehmood, Madan Puri, Dhoomal, Baby Sarika, Master Alankar, Baby Tabassum, Chintu, Bhola, Jal Khatau, Arun Kumar and Kamini Kaushal in friendly appearance.

The film has four songs as per HFGK Vol- V. All the four songs are written by Anand Bakshi, and music is composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar and Manna Dey have lent their voices to the songs in this movie.

Today’s song is a lovely duet sung by Asha Bhonsle and Kishore Kumar and lip synced on screen by Radha Saluja and Anil Dhawan respectively. Lyrics are by Anand Bakshi, and music is composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal.

Since I had not watched this movie I could not say much about this movie or its songs. I would request our knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie and its songs.

Song – Itney Din Tum Kahaan Rahe (Haar Jeet) (1972) Singer – Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhosle, Lyrics – Anand Bakshi, MD – Laxmikant Pyaarelal
Kishore Kumar + Asha Bhosle

itney din
itney din..nn tum kahaan rahe
bolo
itney din tum kahaan rahe
tum kahaan rahe
tum kahaan rahe
tum kahaan rahe
tum kahaan rahe

#the Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
————————————————————
# The Special Voices of the decade – 2 # Anwar #
———————————————–———————-

Welcome all to this second article under this ‘series’.

In this ‘series’ we are discussing the ‘Special Voices’ which emerged on the horizon of HFM in the years of Seventies, and who in their own way have left an indelible mark in the minds of ‘music lovers’ leaving behind legacy of many many memorable songs.

These ‘Special Voices’ are those singers who make their entry in Hindi Film Music when the legends like Mohd Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Manna Dey and Mukesh, Mahendra Kapoor among Male Singers and Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle, among female singers were already ruling the Hindi Film Music scene. Still, these new voices, when they entered into HFM, took the audience by storm. Some of them were successful enough and popular too, and they continue to sustain for a long time.

However, some, though they shine very brightly as they appear on the scene, but were not able to sustain for a long time and slowly fade away from the scene and may be from the memory of many people too. In any case all of them gave us many fabulous songs and memories to cherish forever. Some of these Singers continued to enjoy being favorites among music directors and audience and/ or both and were successful in keeping themselves going and singing.

But some were not lucky enough and were sidelined with or without any reason. Politics, ego, discrimination and hypocrisy play their roles around us in every sphere of life, and Cinema too has always been influenced by these factors. Many talented people have been affected by this. And so, if one compares the number of songs their final tally read one will conclude that they were not successful or popular as the other established singers of their time who were ruling the charts at that time.

But, numbers are not the true test and so in these cases they will not justify the immense talent these people possess.

One of such talented Singer is the name – Anwar Hussain or Anwar as he is better known by. The voice that was said to be the ‘closest’ to, and having a ‘strange resemblance’ with the voice of Rafi Saab.

Anwar was born on 1st February, 1949 in Mumbai. His father Aashiq Hussain was an accomplished harmonium player and assistant to the famous Music Director Ghulam Haider. His father also used to play sitar. This familiar film and music background inspired young Anwar to take on music and singing. Looking at his interest in singing, his father took him to Ustad Abdul Rehman Khan for training in classical music. Here Anwar took a rigorous training for more than ten years.

Simultaneously he was also doing stage shows where he used to sing songs of Rafi Saab. He was noticed by the famous S. Hazara Singh who took him to Poona to sing with his musical group. While Anwar was going around doing the stage shows and singing in marriage functions, he always wanted to do playback singing for movies. His friends were also encouraging him always and telling him that his voice was very much similar to that of Rafi Saab’s voice.

Music director Kamal Rajasthani who was also struggling then to establish himself as a music-director in Hindi film world, spotted Anwar during one of his stage shows and he gave him a break as a playback singer in the movie ‘Mere Ghareeb Nawaaz’ (1973). Kamal Rajasthani also gave him further training to polish his talent.

Anwar made his debut in Hindi films with this song ‘Kasmein Hum Apni Jaan Ki Khaaye Chale Gaye’. Though initially he rehearsed for a different song but was finally given this solo and to sing. It so happened that Rafi Saab was present in the same studio where mixing of this song was being done and when Rafi Saab listened to this song, he asked his secretary when did he recorded this one. One can easily assume that the praise and showering coming straight from the ‘living legend’ then would have been more than enough for someone to establish himself in the industry and make a great career.

However, unfortunately, ‘stars’ were not in favor of Anwar and his career didn’t take off after his debut as he expected it to be. When he recorded his first song he was just twenty years old. So, it was still a long way to go for him. But in spite of the ‘perfect start’ with ‘Mere Ghareeb Nawaaz’, he had to wait for almost four years to get his next chance to sing in Hindi films.

And that too came up after lot of struggle and making visits to several music directors. As told by Anwar himself he used to visit many music directors and play his first recorded song to get work. Many of them appreciated him, but also told him that since Rafi Saab was already there so they didn’t see any reason to have him song for them. In a very recent interview of 2016 Anwar has given vent to his feelings, and his mistakes too, which he admits were mainly responsible to ruin his career in HFM.

Well, coming back to his looking for work, he met many of the leading and famous music directors of that time but nothing materialized. Finally, when he contacted Mehmood who was then busy in the making of ‘Kunwaara Baap’ (1974). He got some respite, as Mehmood assured him to give songs in his next movie ‘Janta Hawaldar’ (1979). Mehmood took him to music director Rajesh Roshan. The latter took him on as a playback singer, without asking him any questions, as he was aware of Mehmood’s ‘music sense’.

And after that as we are all aware the songs of ‘Janta Hawaldar’ were liked immensely by the public specifically “Hamse Ka Bhool Huyi“and “Teri Aankhon Ki Chaahat Mein”.

The song that was first recorded for this movie was “Teri Aankhon Ki Chaahat Mein”. After recording, Mehmood took to play it for Rajesh Khanna who was shooting at ‘Filmalaya Studios’ for another movie. When he listened to this song his reaction was – “Bade dinon ke baad Rafi saab ne bade mood mein gaana gaya hai”.

After this movie he started getting offers and some of his notable songs came in movies like ‘Qurbaani’ (1980), ‘Aahista Aahista’ (1981), ‘Naseeb’ (1981), ‘Prem Rog’ (1982), ‘Vidhaata’ (1982), ‘Arpan’ (1983), ‘Sohni Mahiwal’ (1984), ‘Ham Hain Laajawaab’ (1984), ‘Ye Ishq Nahin Aasan’ (1984), ‘Heer Raanjha’ (1992), etc.

His career lasted for almost twenty years from 1973 to 1993. And as mentioned by him in the interview on RS TV he sang about 1000 to 1500 songs for the movies (I am not aware if this is only for Hindi Movies or it includes other language movies too. Knowledgeable readers are requested to throw more light on this.)

In this same interview the anchor noted and I also vaguely remembered that people initially thought that Anwar was the son of Rafi Saab. It should be noted here that from 1973 to 1980 when Rafi Saab was still alive, he got very less opportunities of singing in movies. Though he got the opportunity to sing with Kishore Kumar, Manna Dey, Suresh Wadkar, Asha Bhonsle, Sudha Malhotra and others he didn’t get that much if we compare it with other singers and that too specially Rafi Saab himself had said about him that he is the best one who could fill the gap after him.

But nothing magical happened and thus a talented singer’s career come to a sad end.

Other than the songs that I mentioned above I like his “Koyee Pardesi Aaya Pardes Mein  and “Haathon Ki Chand Lakeeron Ka”. I would also like to mention the song “Yaar Dagaa De Gaya Dulhan Ko Le Gaya” which is having his voice along with Manna Dey and Jaspal Singh. Another famous song by him is “Mohabbat Ab Tijaarat Ban Gayi Hai”, which he sang for Jeetendra in 1983 for the film ‘Arpan’ which is his other song I like very much and it was quite popular too in those years.

There are many of his songs which I like or which had been popular, however I have mentioned above only those songs which give me ‘nostalgic’ feeling most. So far (if the data is updated and correct) we have only eleven of his songs posted on the blog; and not a single one of his from the melodious musical ‘Ahista Ahista’ has been posted so far on the blog. But, well, that gives us an opportunity to discuss them in future.

Today’s song is closer to my heart and very nostalgic for me. For today’s post initially, I strongly felt to share the song “Nazar Se Phool Chunti Hai Nazar” from ‘Aahista Aahista’, but I skipped it for future. The second option was the beautiful song from ‘Janta Hawaldar’ – “Teri Aankhon Ki Chaahat Mein” (this was available and shared by me long back in 2012, but still to be posted). However, for today, I have selected this song from ‘Be-Shaque’ (1980). Because this way I can also introduce this movie on the blog.

This was a song in my vague memory and I was sure that it was sung by Mohd Rafi. It was in my wish list of the songs that I wish to see on our blog. Before I could search and prepare for it one fine day I noticed that it has been posted for the film ‘Laal Bangla’ (1966). But when I checked again, I found that it does not have the same lines that were in my memory for so long. Confused, I keep on searching and finally succeeded in getting the song which I think I have heard many many years back. Now I got to know that this is sung by Anwar and not by Mohd Rafi. But interestingly, the music for the films ‘Laal-Bangla’ and the movie for today’s song, is composed by the same music director Usha Khanna. The lyrics of this song are penned by Nandi Khanna.

I have not watched this movie and would request our knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this film and the songs from this film. Also, I would like to note here that when I shared this song long back I had only the video of this song which has only one stanza. At that time I thought the song was only this one stanza. Now after almost five years I have been able to find the full version of this song (but audio only) which is being presented with this post today.

The film ‘Be-Shaque’ was directed by Kashinath for Surya Gayatri Productions, Bombay. It had Yogita Bali, Mithun Chakravarty, Sonia Sahni, Jalal Agha, Amrish Puri, Asha Chandra, Suresh Chatwal, Mohan Choti, Pental, Raj Bibra and Shakti Kapoor. This movie has four songs (as per HFGK Vol-V) – two penned by Anjaan, and one each by Ravindra Rawal and Nandi Khanna. Music is by Usha Khanna. Anwar, Asha Bhonsle, Suresh Wadkar and Usha Khanna gave their voices to the songs in this movie. On screen this song is lip synced by Mithun Chakravarty.
