It’s been a while since my last post here. And I feel pretty bad about it. Somehow, in the last month (or more), I’ve just not been able to generate the required mental juice to be able to come up with anything worth putting on paper (or on electronic media). Had Shakespeare been around and had one look at me, he’d have promptly coined something like “Listlessness, thou hast what human spirit conquer’d, For Man knoweth not whence he cometh, and where he goeth”.

Today (16 october) is the 64th birthday of Hema Malini. She ruled the roost in 1970s. So much so that she was described as dream girl by the media. To capitalise on this sobriquet, Pramod Chakraborty actually made a movie called “Dream Girl” (1977) signing up Hema Malini and Dharmendra.

Today (13 october) is the birth anniverasry of Ashok Kumar as well as the death anniversary of Kishore Kumar. After Kishore Kumar’s death on this day 25 years ago, Ashok Kumar stopped celebrating his birthday, naturally. The two brothers, alongwith their third brother Anup Kumar were quite close to each other and we were privileged to see the three brothers together in all the movies that were produced by Kishore Kumar.

October seems to be the month of birthdays for all who made it a habit to entertain us. We have already celebrated Vinod Khanna’s birthday. Next was the turn of Rekha who shares her birhday with S.D.Burman. Then we have the Superstar of the millennium (as the media went overboard describing him) Amitabh Bachchan followed by the grand old man of Hindi movies Ashok Kumar who shares it with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Then the list will have Nirupa Roy (everyone’s Mom or Ashok Kumar’s heroine as you may choose to remember her). And going by the list which Atul has compiled with the list sent by our in-house encyclopedia Arunkumar Deshmukhji and lots of inputs from Khyatiji and Prakashchandraji we will be celebrating a lot of birthdays in the days to come.

Kishore Kumar, who was externally a jovial and boisterous character had a sensitive side to him as well. He could sing serious and sensitive songs with the same ease with which he rendered fun songs. When it came to producing movies, Kishore Kumar has produced rip roaring comedy viz. “Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi” (1958) and “Jhumru” (1961), but many of his subsequent movies dealt with sensitive topics. These movies were far ahead of their times and the Indian masses were by and large not evolved enough to appreciate Kishore Kumar’s subsequent movies on serious topics, namely “Door Gagan Ki Chhaaon Mein”(1964), “Door Ka Raahi” (1971), “Door Waadiyon Mein” (1982).

I was at my movie watching “best” in 1980, and movies of that vintage are recent movies by the standards of this blog. Still I had never heard of this movie called “Zaalim” (1980) till now. When one looks at the starcast of this movie, one finds the name of Vinod Khanna as the hero who looked the most likely candidate to challenge Amitabh Bachchan as the leading male actor of those days, but unlike Amitabh Bachchan, Vinod Khanna lacked peace of mind and was searching for it in the Ashram of Bhagwan Rajneesh, later known as Osho. As a result, Vinod Khanna was distracted and was unable to devote himself fully to his filmy career. That told on the box office performances of his movies of those days.
