Searching for and locating the last few songs in a list always becomes a challenge, and the pace slows down considerably. In the process of completing the posting of all known songs of Mukesh till 1950, getting the last few remaining songs is turning out to be quite an effort. When films started ‘ Talking’, the industry needed actresses who could look good and sing well. Already hard pressed to get girls from educated respectable families, the producers turned to professional singers (Tawayafs) or the Courtesans. These girls knew Hindi/Urdu well, were trained in singing and were experts in handling people. They could and actually did replace the Anglo Indian girls, who had been in the industry since the Silent era, but who found it difficult to talk or sing in Hindi/Urdu. There were some enterprising Anglo Indian girls like Sabita Devi or Irina Gasper, who learnt speaking Hindi and singing just to continue their careers successfully. Later on she made a Hit pair with Motilal in many films, starting with Shehar ka jaadu-1934.

The mention of the name, takes me back again and again to my first meeting with Vijaylaxmi ji Deseram, and her introduction of Dr. Ashraf Aziz. Regulars will be familiar with Vijaylaxmi ji. Most avid listeners of Radio Ceylon and then Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation will immediately recognize this name, and will recall the soft and relaxing voice that has been the anchor of many mainline radio programs on Hindi film music and its creators. I have not yet met Dr. Aziz (who stays in Washington DC, USA), or even talked with him on the phone. But I am so familiar with his childhood and adolescent years, as also part of his later life. All on account of a wonderfully written article that captures a few key episodes and passages in great detail. The subject matter dealt within this article is beautifully summarized in its title – “Sajjaad Hussain Ki Khoj Mein”.
