Listening to Binaca geetmala on wednesday nights is one of my most memorable moments of 1970s. If I am asked to name one song from Binaca geetmala that stands out in memory, then this particular song has to be that. This song appeared to be playing every time I listened to Binaca geetmala weekly programmes. If one looks dispassionately, neither this song, nor any other song from this movie figured in Binaca geetmala finals, but at that time, this movie and other songs from this movie appeared to be all over Binaca geetmala.

There are many occasions I am told that this particular song was so wonderful, and I nod my head sagely, though in reality I may not even have a clue what song is being talked about. For instance, I have been told that ” bol meri taqdeer me kya hai” from “Hariyali aur raasta” is a wonderful song. I nodded my head knowledgeably at this suggestion by Raja though I doubted I had ever heard this song.

Here is a very catchy song from a by now forgotten movie called “Banphool”. Kishore Kumar sang this song with gusto. Lyrics were written by Anand Bakshi and the music was a typically racy Laxmikant Pyarelal tune.

How do I classify this song ? There are a few songs in this blog that I call “car songs” because they were sung while riding a car. Here the hero Jeetendra sings this song riding an elephant. 😉

Rajesh Khanna on screen and Kishore Kumar giving playback on the composition of Laxmikant Pyarelal- it was a recipe for some memorable bollywood movie songs. In addition, this recipe also has Mumtaz singing in the voice of Lata.

Here is a song that is barely known to people like me who actually lived through the era when this movie was released. The reason why this song is unknown are many, for one, this movie, “Talaash” had the misfortune of being released simultaneously with Aradhana. The songs of Talaash, though great in their own right, suffered in comparison with “Aradhana”. Most of the songs from this movie were very nice to listen to, but the problem was, they became forgotten with time.

This particular song is a classical music based song, and ordinary public can be counted upon to keep away from such music. But now, with the benefit of hind sight, and after one listens to the song a few times, this song starts growing on it.

For those who lived in India during 1960s and 1970s, and who listened to radio Ceylon every morning, 7-30 to 8 AM was the time for old songs. Most people (masses) including kids like me scoffed at these old songs and waited for 8 AM. Last song of that programme was by K L Sehgal, and we would know that the “aaphi ke geet” programme, where new songs were played was just round the corner. All over the country, listeners, including the farmaish senders from Jhumri Tilaiyya and elsewhere would start paying more attention.

There was one exception during this time slot between 7-30 to 8 AM though, and that would arrive on the first day of every new month. This was a song of Kishore Kumar that would go ” din hai suhana aj pahli tarikh hai”. Even those who could not stand old songs would approve of this song. It was the only song of that programme that no one ever found boring or grumbled against.

Rajesh Khanna had acted opposite many actresses right from seniors like Asha Parekh and Sharmila Tagore to his contemporaries like Hema Malini and Rekha as well as juniors like Shabana Azmi and Smita Patil. There are many Bollywood stars who have acted opposite their wives before marrying them. Rajesh Khanna did not acted against Dimple, but he did something rare. He is perhaps the only leading actor who has acted against his sister in law in a movie.

The lyrics would really move you, in case you get the context of the song. And one need not know the story line to get the context. Just look at the video. The actors Rajesh Khanna and Rekha, as well as the singers Kishore and Lata make the context so clear that I need not fill in the background details. Very powerful emotions have been penned in very simple language by Gulshan Bawra. It was one of the last hits of R D Burman before the trend of chaalu songs lashed Bollywood like a thunderstorm.
