In my younger days, I used to identify Hyderabad with Nizams. For me Hyderabad and Nizamshahi were inseparable in the city’s history, developments and monuments. The establishment of Osmania University is one example among others of the contributions of Nizams in this region. It was only when I visited Hyderabad for the first time on a sightseeing trip in 1989, I became aware of the role of Qutub Shahi (also written as Qutb Shahi) dynasty in the development of Hyderabad. Of the 7 Sultans of Qutub Shahi dynasty that ruled from Golconda and later from Hyderabad, the reign of 5th Sultan, Mohammed Quli Qutub Shah was regarded as the golden period. During his rule, Charminar was constructed and a new capital across Musi River called Bhagnagar and later renamed as Hyderabad was established.

(1975 – Solo)
Wow, vintage Rafi, if ever it were.
As I was browsing for the song from 1975, I bumped into this very old friend, whom I had not met for a long time. But oh, what a lovely remembrance this one. A wonderful gem of a song, that is lost in obscurity, even though the film is comparatively not very old.

Fortunately or unfortunately (for my friends, readers and followers) I belong to the variety of people who take pleasure in bringing out the hidden rare gems from HFM, usually from the 60s and the 70s. n keeping with my passion for “Rare Hindi Film Songs” (RHFS is my group on FB), today, I present a forgotten gem from a movie – “Raftaar” released in 1975.

A few days ago I heard this song on my mobile. There is huge collection of songs, come from where in my mobile I do not know. When the instrument was new, my daughter was trying out all functions in it. She has downloaded many old songs. This has to be one of them. For one born in 1990’s the 1970’s songs are old. I am getting to know what songs are there only now, since I thought to make use of the cache.

“Amaanat” (1975) was produced and directed by Shatrujit Paul. The movie had Manoj Kumar, Sadhana, Balraj Sahni, Mehmood, Achala Sachdev, Shashikala, Keshto Mukherji etc in it. This movie began in 1960s and its songs got released much before the movie. The movie itself had a very delayed release. It finally got its censor certificate on 31 december 1975 and thus qualified as a movie of 1975!

Hullo to all Atulites
Morning times are the times when people generally listen to Bhajans and Pravachans and I am no different. Till a few years back my mornings used to begin with switching on the radio to Vividh Bharati or Radio Ceylon and music used to play through the day. Then the FM channels took over and there used to be a Channel Switching (or changing if I may say) exercise in between the various radio programmes and my own work activities. To add to the confusion, suddenly, TV went 24 hours along with giving us a bouquet of music channels to listen to. And then what happens to a music Buff like me? It was and is the biggest distraction for me especially during working hours.

Today (26 january 2014) is the 65th Republic day of India. It is easily the most important red letter day in the annals of independent India because India became a democratic republic on this day. Considering the old habits the Indians were used to for thousands of years, this was a new concept for Indians and many Indians have not fully reconciled to this concept even today, but this concept has paved the way for a nation where all Indians , irrespective of their backgrounds were guaranteed equality- something which was not guaranteed to them before 26 january 1950. Republic day also stresses the fact that India represents unity in diversity and that Indians, for all their diverse backgrounds can live and work with their fellow countrymen in harmony.
