When I was in school, I did not see a single movie in a movie hall for six years. It was more by compulsion rather than by choice, of course. My elders would neither go to movie halls themselves nor take me. Watching movies spoil children and their future would be spoilt for ever- that was the rationalisation they gave to everyone who would listen. And my movie deprivation era (1972- 1978) were the prime era for Hindi movie watchers. 🙂

Movies can be on many topics and it is not necessary that they should all be made on the prevalent mainstream subject of that era. But this fact was not known to movie goers or even to movie critics in the past decades. People would go to the movie hall with pre conceived notions of what the movie should be like and they would be disappointed if the movie had a different story line. There were Amitabh Bachchan movies in late 1970s and late 1980s where movie goers went expecting a dhishum dhishum fare but were extremelyt disappointed on finding that the movie had no fight scenes, and worse, Amitabh Bachchan was shown as a mortal rather than one who could singlehandedly taken on lots of baddies.

Sadhana was one of the biggest female star of her time in 1960s. But her aura was all but gone by late 1960s and 1970s. The first solo song that Kishore Kumar sang in his playback career was for Dev Anand in the movie “Ziddi” (1948) under the music direction of Khemchand Prakash. Then S D Burman, his mentor used his good offices to get Kishore Kumar to give plaback for Raj Kapoor in “Pyaar” (1950). But from that time onwards, Kishore Kumar sang for himself or for Dev Anand, in case it was a Dev Anand movie with S D Burman’s music direction. I can think of one more exception during 1950s though where Kishore Kumar sang for someone other than himself or Dev Anand. It was the iconic song Din hai suhaana aaj pahli taarikh hai(Pahli taarikh) (1954) which was picturised on Raja Nene.

“Pati Patni Aur Woh” (1978) was a B R Chopra production. It was produced and directed by B R Chopra. The movie was a light hearted adult comedy in the sense that it depicted the tale of a man carrying on an affair with his female secretary in office behind the back of his homely wife.
