Happy Navaratri, Dussehra to all in Atuldom
Today is the second last day or the penultimate day of the Sharad Navaratr also simply called Navaratri? We worship the mother goddess in her various forms viz: Shakti or Durga along with Lakshmi and Saraswati. But I am not going to describe the festival and the rituals attached with it here. Some parts of the country celebrate Dussehra as the day when Lord Rama vanquished the ten headed Demon- King Raavan. This is usually preceded by the Ram Leela being staged in some parts of the country. Lets us summarise to say that Navaratri is the festival where the good is supposed to triumph over the Evil.

“Jaani Dushman”(1979) was produced and directed by Rajkumar Kohli. The movie had received enormous publicity before its release. It was a multistarrer movie, though the stars who mattered to be those days, viz. Amitabh Bachchan, Vinod Khanna and Dharmendra did not figure in the movie. A look at her face (in the photos online), and it is difficult to believe that she is a grandmother of four years now. Her daughter, Riddhima, gave birth to a girl child in 2011. Rewinding further back, her wedding in 1980 to her frequent co-star Rishi Kapoor, seems like a news one read in the paper just a few weeks ago. At 57 today, her smile and the bright countenance belies her age.
Wishing a very happy birthday to Neetu Singh today (8th July).

In part I, we introduced swars and mentioned that combination of swars constitutes melody. In part II, we introduced the concept of Rhythm (taal) and mentioned that it is the combination of melody and rhythm that makes music what it is today.
Each of the two parts were quite heavy duty stuff for people not exposed to such stuff earlier. I got some comments on part I, but hardly any for the second part, which may mean that these concepts may have been going above the heads of readers. Nevertheless, these concepts are vital and they needed to be introduced. Here is the third part of the discussion on basics of music.

I have confused “Chambal Ki Raani”(1979) with “Chambal ki Kasam”(1979) for a very long time indeed. “Chambal Ki Kasam” (1979) was directed by Ram Maheshwari for M P D Productions, Bombay. It had Raj Kumar, Shatrughan Sinha, Mausami Chatterji, Farida Jalal, Ranjeet, Pradeep Kumar, Nirupa Roy, Paintal, Amjad Khan (Special appearance), Gopal Sahgal, R Tiwari, Usha KIran, Peace Kanwal, Jagdish Raj, Nazeer Hussain, Paro devi, Goofi, Maruti Rao, Uma Khosla, Raj Rani, Baby Shalu, Master Bhagwan, Usha (Gwalior), Pt Ganga Prasad (Gwalior), Gurcharan etc. This movie had lyrics by Sahir Ludhianvi and music by Khayyam.

Last year, I had presented a pair of hamradeef ghazals of Jigar Moradabadi and Mirza Ghalib wo jo rootheen to manaana chaahiye sung by Mukesh and Talat Mehmood, respectively as a duet making them into one combined ghazal. The main features of hamradeef ghazals are that they have the same ‘qaafiya’ (rhythmic patterns), the same ‘baher’ (meter) and the same radeef (the last word in the second line of each she’r).
