After a fairly long break, I’m writing a post for the blog today.

Hullo to all in Atuldom
Today’s post is under instructions from my husband- Peevesie’s Dad. Oh yes, he is a silent-satulite (a term coined by team Atulites when referring to spouses of Atulites, the term has no geographical or scientific connotation and will be found only in Atulite-lingo 🙂 ). He had asked me to write a post after we returned from a pilgrimage of Sabarimala, which is the abode of Swami Ayyappa. And as far as possible I fulfil every farmaish/ request of his (actually the children, Peevesie more than her brother, rag the two of us for going out of our way to fulfil each other’s requests- there have been no demands between the two of us only requests).

In India, we are often required to attend get togethers (formal/ officials as well as informal/ unofficial etc). Singing of a few film songs is almost always a part of these gatherings, which are sung by enthusiastic singers and their performances are followed by polite clappings.
The songs that are sung on these gatherings are mostly from the golden era originally sung by legends. I often think of that era when these legends were still around me. I would often imagine a gathering where songs were sung not by the enthusiastic singers but by the singers who originally sang these songs. Just imagine participating in a programme where Rafi songs are being sung live by none other than Rafi himself !

It was a surprise for many – when the Mukesh Geet Kosh was published (in 1985), and the compilation, at that time, was able to list less than a thousand songs in all – filmi, non filmi, other languages all combined. It was a general impression carried amongst the fans that well, yes, Mukesh has not sung as many songs as Rafi Sb, but then, less than thousand?? And then, it became a new topic to write about and discuss – why is it so that the impression is that Mukesh has recorded a lot many more songs than are popularly known.

Let us have a fun song from the 1981, Shomu Mukherjee produced & directed “Fiffty Fiffty” (and this is how fifty is spelt in the title card) which was certified on 15/10/1981 and released on 13/11/1981. It starred Rajesh Khanna and Tina Munim with Om Shivpuri (Bihari), Purnima (Mrs. Thakur), Amarnath (Thakur Vijendra Singh who is killed by Mr. Bihari before the titles), IndraniMukerjee (Mrs. Bihari who becomes dumb due to Mr. Bihari), Jairaj, Anita Guha, Nazir Hussain, Johny Whisky, CS Dubey, Jankidas, Jagdeep, Mushtaq Merchant, Kader Khan and Ranjeet. Dialogues were by Kader Khan. Anand Bakshi wrote the songs and Laxmikant-Pyarelal were the music directors.

With this post, the blog now carries 700 songs by Laxmikant Pyaarelal.
The story of Laxmikant Pyaarelal reads like a dream rags-to-riches story. But it is also a story of hard work and persistent effort. Laxmikant, the senior partner in the team, was three years elder to Pyaarelal. Interestingly, both were born on 3rd of the month, Laxmikant in November and Pyaarelal in September. Pyaarelal is the son of the renowned musician Ram Prasad Sharma. Although active in the film industry since the latter part of 1930s, Ram Prasad did some films independently from 1947 to 1950. Not adept with commercial acumen, his financial status was poor most of his life. Pyaarelal, his eldest son, had to start working as a musician in recording studios at the age of 12, to support his family. The story of Laxmikant’s childhood is even more depressing. He was raised in the slums of Vile Parle in Bombay. His father passed away when he was just a toddler. A friend of his father supported him and guided him towards learning music. With time, his talent shone through, and he too started working as a musician in the film industry.
Remembering Laxmikant Shantaram Kudalkar on the 19th anniversary of his passing away today (25th May).
