In my last article, I had discussed playback singer and actor Shyam Kumar, who has acted in many Hindi films but remained unidentified for most of the Hindi film audience. In this write-up, I am presenting one more such actor who has made us to notice him in many films but remained unsung because he did very small roles in most of the films in which he got opportunity to act – mostly as a sidekick, a henchman, a doctor, barman, hotel manager etc. Though his roles in most of the films have been very brief say, not be more than 5 minutes duration but whatever he did as an actor in varied roles, it was noticeable to the filmy audience. The actor is Keshav Rana whose face in the films may be familiar to many cine audience but may not be known by his name to them.

Hullo Atuldom
The song with this post was very popular in the 70s. We can hear it occasionally even now on the AIR’s Vividh Bharati. It is sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist with RD Burman as the music director.
‘Bhanwar’ (1976) was directed by Bhappie Sonie and had a cast headed by Ashok Kumar, Randhir Kapoor, Parveen Babi, Aruna Irani, Asrani, Ranjeet, Kamini Kaushal, Nadira, Madan Puri etc. Two songs from this movie are already posted on this blog.

Songs Repeated in Hindi Films – 16

Aah yes, this one too. This iconic and popular song from the 1969 film ‘Jeene Ki Raah’, reappeared in a shorter version in the 1972 film ‘Baazigar’. Albeit the use of this song is somewhat casual, and does not seem to fulfill any purpose, symbolic or otherwise. Seems like a time filler, as one goes through the initial part of the film.

An iconic song from 1965 – absoute gem, absolutely unforgettable. “Kaanton Se Kheench Ke Ye Aanchal. . . Aaj Phir Jeene Ki Tamanna Hai” from the 1965 film ‘Guide’. Created by the greats of that era – Shailendra, SD Burman and Lata Mangeshkar. And coming from a film directed by Vijay Anand, one is assured that the picturization would be superlative, which it surely is. The song continues to sustain its beauty even after more than five decades. It is such a genuine treat both visually and aurally.

wo chaand hai to aks bhi paani mein aayegaa
kirdaar khud ubhar ke kahaani mein aayegaa
(Iqbal Sajid)
Aks – reflection
Kirdaar – character
“jis ke paas koyi saboot nahin hota, kya wo kabhi beqasoor nahi ho sakta.”
This is the dialogue spoken by Meenakshi Sheshadri to Anil Kapoor, a lawyer, when he has refused to take her sister’s Beena’s case. Meenakshi’s sister is a doctor and a patient dies in her private clinic, after she has administered a medicine to the patient. The medicine contains poison, and the bottle is already in the custody of the courts/police. There is no way anyone can prove that the patient did not die because of the medicine in that bottle. So all the lawyers are refusing the case and Meenakshi and the brother in law Parikshit Sahani, also a doctor, are running from pillar to post to find a lawyer who can defend Beena in the court.

My affair with Sadhna started very tiny. The film was ‘Ek Phool Do Mali’ (1969) and the song was “Sainyaan Le Gayi Jeeya Teri Pehli Nazar”. That image of a beautiful Kashmiri village belle, with that charming and becoming smile captured my mind and my heart. She was being blackmailed by Sanjay to sing a song for him, using her recorded voice in a tape recorder, which he threatened to make public. So in a manner of speaking, the song was of the ‘Dance Under Duress’ category. 🙂 She is somewhat letting it on that her song and dance is a make believe effort. But then Hindi films are Hindi films. And a tiny pre-teen mind is quite inexperienced in these matters; and quite easily enamored by that charming smile, and the gestures of endearment, howsoever artificial they may have been.

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2009-19) – Song No. 41
——————————————————————————————
1st August of 2009, ten years ago. Five songs had been posted that day. As many as 4 movies opened their accounts on the blog that day – the four debut movies being ‘Shin Shinaki Boobla Boo’ (1952), ‘Sabse Bada Rupaiya’ (1955), ‘Duniya Rang Rangeeli’ (1957) and ’Laakhon Mein Ek’ (1971). The fifth film – ‘Bhabhi’ from 1957 had its 5th song posted that day.
The current status of these five films is that two of them – ‘Bhaabhi’ and ‘Duniya Rang Rangeeli’ have since been yippeee’d. for the remaining 3 films, two songs are pending for each one of them. The following table gives the complete status, as of just prior to this post today. The second last column gives info about the film status as of ten years ago, and the last column gives the status, as of today.
| Ruk Jaa Re Piyaa | Sabse Bada Rupaiyya | 1955 | Deb | 7 of 9 |
| Tie Lagaa Ke Maana Janaab Ban Gaye Hero | Bhaabhi | 1957 | 5th | Yippeee’d |
| Tum Kyaa Jaano Tumhaari Yaad Me Ham Kitna Roye | Shin Shinaaki Bubbla Boo | 1952 | Deb | 5 of 7 |
| Sainyaa Kyon Aaye Mujhe Angdaayi | Duniya Rang Rangeeli | 1957 | Deb | Yippeee’d |
| Jogi O Jogi Arre Pyaar Me Kyaa Hogaa | Laakhon Mein Ek | 1971 | Deb | 3 of 5 |
Getting on to Ten-Year Challenge, I looked up the pending songs from the three films that are still awaiting yippeee status, and I have picked this song from the film ‘Shin Shinaki Boobla Boo’ of 1952.

Today’s song is from film ‘Kaarwaan’ (1956), a costume drama, made by Shahkaar productions, Bombay. Produced by Dev Jolly, it was directed by Rafiq Rizvi – whose career as a director came to a close with this film. His 6 films began with ‘Waayda’ (1940). The music was by S Mohinder.
