The blog has seen two dry days in a row when no new posts were made. It is something unusual for the blog but it cannot be avoided. As it is, I was travelling all these days. In fact my travel is not over yet. I have to commence my return journey from today and it will be another couple of days before I arrive back at my base.

Rafi Sb – In The Seventies – 20
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

(1980 – Duet)

A brief and approximate view of the numbers from Rafi Sb’s career. I am basing this view on the data available in the Rafi Song list, and from browsing of the Geet Kosh. In the 1940s, starting from 1945 and upto 1950, his film songs number less than 200, approximately in the range of 165 to 170. Then in the 1950s, this number rises dramatically. An approximation is 1370 film songs in that decade. In the 1960s, we see a further improvement in this number – the approximate number of songs as per records is 1500, plus or minus 10. As we come into the 70s, there is a drop in this number. The records show that there are approximately 1025 songs in the decade from 1971 to 1980. I would like to add that these numbers also include the known songs from unreleased films, i.e. songs that were recorded for films, but the films either did not get made or were not released.

Of late, I have been watching some offbeat Hindi movies (also called parallel cinemas or middle cinemas) on DVDs which I had bought at the time of my retirement to watch them later at my leisure. These type of films though artistically well conceived with good narrative style, the realism depicted in some of such films are too disturbing for me. Going by my experience, such well made films may not have repeat audience either in theatres or for watching on DVDs. After watching ‘ Kaagaz Ke Phool’ (1959) sometime in mid 6Os during Guru Dutt’s film festival, I have yet to amass courage to watch it once more though I have the DVD of the film. As against this, I must have watched umpteen times, movies like ‘Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi’ (1958), ‘Padosan’ (1968), and ‘Chupke Chupke’ (1975). Among the films of the recent period, I have seen ‘3 Idiots’ (2OO9) at least 3 times.

Today (22 september 2014) is the 23rd death anniversary of Durga Khote (14 January 1905-22 September 1991). Though she began playing the roles of leading lady in the beginning of her career, she soon began to get the roles of mother to several generations of actors.

Rafi Sb – In The Seventies – 13
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

(1977 – Solo)

When I picked this song for this series, my first reaction was – wow, not yet posted on the blog? I remember from the radio listening days, that this song was very popular in its time. And it still carries a very vibrant appeal that will take the listener to a high. Rafi Sb has sung this song with such zest and abandon, his voice sounding so bright and breezy. Without the visual, the song conjures up images of a playful teasing situation, as the lady seems to be upset and is walking off, being pursued by a persistent lover, who expresses casual disregard for her but also promises that she will be turning back in no time. A promise that is fulfilled, not later than the end of the song.

Rafi Sb – In The Seventies – 12

(1976 – Duet)

If nothing else, producer director Rajkumar Kohli has made a place in memory and in records, for producing films that have a huge galaxy of stars working together. I cannot easily recall any other producer director having pulled of this feat. In this film, ‘Naagin’, the star cast is a veritable milky way with the presence of Sunil Dutt, Feroz Khan, Sanjay, Jeetendra, Kabir Bedi, Vinod Mehra, Anil Dhawan, Premnath, Ranjeet, and Roopesh Kumar , working opposite to Rekha, Reena Roy, Yogita Bali, Mumtaz, Prema Narayan, Aruna Irani, Heena Kausar, Neelam Mehra, Aarti, Anita Guha and Komilla Wirk. And the second line of casting is still to come – Jagdeep, Gulshan Arora, Tun Tun, Sulochana, Maruti, Satish Arora, Rajan Sethi etc.
