(1972 – Duet)

Here is the duet that I have selected from 1972. Another peerless and lovely memory from the radio listening days. A song that is softly composed and softly rendered in a leisurely pace. Asha Bhosle accompanies Rafi Sb in the singing. The film is ‘Parchhaaiyaan’, the lyrics are by Majrooh Sultanpuri and the music composition is by RD Burman. On screen, this song is performed by Vinod Khanna, a new comer heroine, Reshma. A name that I am not familiar with at all. Apparently she appeared in not many films. (1972 – Solo)

Coming to the 1972 installment of this series. The song that I have selected is in the same genre as yesterday’s solo. Yesterday, it was “Ye Shor Hai Gali Gali, Ke Wo Jawaan Ho Chali”, telling about a young lass stepping into the age of youth. The song today tells the same story, this time about a girl named Reshma.

(1971 – Duet)

The decade of the seventies brought in some significant changes in the landscape of Hindi film song. For one, it was the spectacular rise of Kishore Kumar as a playback singer.“Mere Sapnon Ki Raani” happened in 1969, and after that we see a meteoric rise in Kishore Da’s playback singing performances. The second significant aspect is the accompanying rise of the new age music spearheaded by music directors like RD Burman and Bappi Lahiri. The generations were changing, and the new generations lapped on the new age music coming from this new crop of composers. Sadly, however, the demise of melody was also acknowledged to have occurred in this decade.

Now, the maxim of proposes and disposes applies so well to the inception of this new series. Totally unplanned and unexpected for me that I am initiating it today. So here is how it transpired.

Here is a quick quiz from me (searching, googling etc. allowed). Which song was the 5000th song in the blog ? Easy, you say, it is the song Hamen to loot liya milke husnwaalon ne (Al Hilaal)(1958). Alright, here is the next question- who lip syncs the immmortal qawwaali ? It is difficult, but not difficult for those who have gone through the huge writeup on this song in the blog. 🙂 The artist lip syncing this song is called Sheikh.
