In the second half of 1960s and the first half of 1970s, Shashi Kapoor was the busiest actor in the industry. After his struggle years of early 1960s, and riding on the success of films like ‘Jab Jab Phool Khile’ (1965), he started getting offers in such huge numbers, and because he did not turn down any one, there was a time when he was booked for almost 5 to 7 years at a single stretch.

The best thing about Holi songs is that in most cases, the message of colors is immediately apparent in the coloring of the lyrics. The songs get created in the spirit of Holi itself. It is a social and group celebrations, and the songs of this festival are sung by multiple singers, and performed by a multitude of players on the screen. And as we sit down to color code the lyrics, the resulting view is as colorful as the festival itself.

“Swayamwar”(1980) was produced by B Nagi Reddi and directed by P Sambasiva Rao for Vijaya Productions (P) Limited. In other words, this movie was produced by the makers of “Chandamama”, a popular Children’s magazine that used to be published in some 14 languages of India (and even some foreign languages). Readers who loved reading the stories of “Chandamama” also loved the movies produced by the Production house.

After the gangout session, as everyone dispersed and proceeded to their respective destinations, Srinivas (SignalTimer) and I headed to the local train station, that is just like across the road from the gangout meeting place. We took the train going south; we had a visit scheduled, to meet another common friend who is beset with the same passion of the Hindi film music from the Golden Era. The name is Kushal Gopalka. IN CUSTODY (1994) also known as MUHAFIZ was a film belonging to the parallel cinema based on Booker award nominated novel by the same name written by Anita Desai. The film was produced under the banner of Merchant Ivory Productions and was directed by Ismail Merchant. The star cast included Shashi Kapoor, Shabana Azmi, Om Puri, Sushma Seth, Neena Gupta, Tinnu Anand, Ajay Sahani, Prayag Raj, Virendra Saxena etc. The film picked up published nazms and ghazals of Faiz Ahmed Faiz for songs which were jointly composed by Ustad Zakir Hussain and Ustad Sultan Khan. I had set out in detail the story of the film while discussing ae jazba-e-dil gar main chaahoon. For the sake of the background, I will give here only a gist of the story of the film.

One of the important targets that I chase on a regular basis these days is seeing that all songs of movies get covered and then that movie title in coloured orange in the list of songs. Often it so happens that I cover all songs of a movie but I forget to colour the title of movie red in the list of songs or forget to include the name of the movie in the list of ” movies with all songs covered”.
