Sometimes the temptation to write an article about an artist is to start with a sampler of the fabulous, memorable songs by him/her, to represent the variety, the flavor and the endearing memories that artist has created as a legacy and a treasure presented for generations to enjoy. But when one is writing about an artist of the stature of Rafi, or Lata, or Naushad, giving even an extended sampler for such artists is like lighting a lamp in bright sunlight (literally ‘suraj ko diya dikhana’). There are a few artists of such eminence that need no introductions through a sampler list of their songs. A name that definitely belongs to this category is Majrooh Sb.
Remembering Majrooh Sultanpuri on the anniversary of his passing away today (24th May).

We have all played antakshari at least once in our life time. There will definitely be many who will say that it is more that once. So when does a group feel like playing it? Probably when on a bus to some picnic spot with friends or on a train or sometimes even at marriage functions. At least these were the times my group, whether it be a bunch of cousins or classmates, indulged in the game. Especially if it was raining and we can’t go out on the field during lunch hour during school days. Now my daughter says that they used to play the game daily on the way to school in their bus. I remember there was this cousins wedding in ’85 and the gamer that we started went on for around 5 hours with no team willing to give up. O it was a lot of fun. And then our elders had to physically dismantle the group to disperse the group.

We (or at least I) believe that most Hindi songs are picturised unrealistically and they bear little resemblence to real life situations. However, every now and then we come across songs that are picturised so nicely and realistically that they warm the cockles of our heart.

Greetings to all as we celebrate today the 66th anniversary of independence of this nation. Over the years, we have enjoyed many songs, published on this blog and many not yet showcased here. Songs that celebrate the spirit of patriotism and nationalism, songs that celebrate the event of freedom for this nation on this day. The flavors and the moods of these songs vary a lot. From serious songs of nationalism, from songs that talk of struggles and martyrdom, from songs that exhort their audience to rise and protect, to the songs that celebrate the honor of this land and its people, to the songs that express joy of freedom, and songs that inspire hard work and nation building. So many poets have written such a variety of verses. Every Independene Day and Republic Day we post 6 to 8 songs, and yet there seems to be a treasure of such songs that is out there, still to be discovered.
