Today’s song is from film Sati Toral-47. This film was made by Laxmi Productions, Bombay and was directed by Nandlal Jaswantlal. The music was provided by a team of Hari Prasanna Das and Manna Dey. The song is sung by Amirbai Karnataki and Manna Dey. The lyrics were by Miss Kamal, B.A. This was a pseudonym of Kavi Pradeep. At that time, he was under contract with Bombay Talkies and could not use his real name . Under this Pen name, he wrote lyrics for four films, namely Kadambari-44, Amrapali-45, Sati Toral-47 and Veerangana-47. Incidentally, all these films were directed by Nandlal Jaswantlal.

Missing Films of 1960s – 81
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Today, I am introducing a film that is significant in a certain way. The film is ‘Veer Ghatotkach’ from 1970. The role of the main protagonist – Veer Ghatotkach – is played in this film by Master Chandgi Ram. Folks who are familiar with the domestic Indian style wrestling and follow this sport, will be familiar with this name. Master Chandgi Ram was a regular pehalwaan and a wrestler of the first grade, in the Indian style wrestling sport, during the 1960s an 70s. Prior to him, the wrestler who was considered to be the no. 1 and the champion, was Dara Singh. As Dara Singh phased himself out of the wrestling sport during the mid 1960s, the fortunes of Master Chandgi Ram took quite an upswing.

# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 74# Remembering Kishore Kumar on his Remembrance Day #
———————————————————————-

Today (13th October’2018) is the 31th Remembrance Day of – singer, actor, director, producer, lyricist, music director, writer – and our ‘most beloved and versatile genius’ Kishore Kumar.

I had planned a write-up for this occassion several months back and had even started work on it but it kept getting delayed for various reasons. My recent travel to India and the work load after getting back to work also prevented me from finalizing that write up.

Missing Films of 1960s – 80
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Aha, good going at 80. If I am lucky, I may get to a century with this series. 🙂

Today’s film is just about at the bottom of the decade. The film name is ‘Ye Khoon Rang Laayega’ from 1970. Considering the alphabetic listing scheme by year, you will find this film at the second last position in GK volume no. 4 (of the regular set of Hindi films of that decade).

Today’s song is from a saint film, ‘Sant Sakhu’ (1941).

Out of the many saints that came from Maharashtra, like Tukaram, Ramdas, Gyaneshwar etc, Sakhu was probably the only female saint on whom a bilingual film – Hindi and Marathi – was made. Unlike other saints, Sakhu possibly was not a historical figure because no mention about her is found anywhere in any document. Nevertheless, she was extremely popular amongst the rural folks of not only Maharashtra but also was a popular name in Karnataka, Andhra, Tamilnadu and Orissa. In the pre independence era, Sakhu or Sakhubai was quite a common name in these areas. I remember that we had a maid servant named Sakhubai in our Hyderabad home. She was a Telugu woman, did not know Marathi, but knew who Sakhu was !

Hullo to all in Atuldom

Last year on this date, post our Avadh Lalji had asked in the comments “I wonder whether it is a deliberate omission on your part to exclude many of her successful films she has done with the Millennium Star as also his name from the list of her leading co-stars?”

My answer to this was “You are right about not mentioning Amitabh. Because that is my normal habit. Posting a common song also. And I forgot to put in the disclaimer… Errors and omission to be excused.”

I was told by my mother that my father was very fond of Hindi films. He was a fan of V Shantaram and Shanta Apte. He would visit Mangalore (now Mangaluru) just to watch a newly released Hindi film. This was in early 40s, when travelling from my native place (Mulki) to Mangaluru – about 25 kms of distance – was itself an adventure. It used to take almost the whole day. So to watch a film in a theatre in Mangaluru, it was necessary to stay overnight in the city.

Missing Films of 1960s – 79
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

The 1960s missing films train continues to chug along. 🙂

In this episode, we bring on board a very obscure film from 1964 – ‘Teen Dost’. The film itself is quite forgotten and the songs of this film are quite a rarity. So far only one record of this film has appeared in public domain, meaning only two songs of this film are available, out of the five songs listed in the Geet Kosh.
