‘Anokha Rishta’ (1986) was produced under the banner of Century Films and was directed by I V Sasi. The film starred Rajesh Khanna in a pivotal role with Sabeeha, Smita Patil (special appearance), Karan Shah, Tanuja, Satish Shah, Beena, Shafi Inamdar, Sukumari, Shaloo etc. The film was a remake of Malayalam film ‘Kanamarayathu’ (1984) which was also directed by I V Sasi. The film’s story was written by Padmarajan which was adapted from a novel, ‘Daddy-Long-Legs’ (1912) written by American writer, Jean Webster. This was the debut film of Sabeeha, daughter of actor, Ameeta and actor-director, Kamran.

Hullo Atuldom
A few months back our in-house encyclopedia a.k.a Shri. Arunkumar Deshmukhji had given us a post. This post gave us information about the various actors, down the years, who were connected to successful artists of the film industry but who’s career could not proceed beyond their first few films. That list included Raj Kapoor’s son Rajeev Kapoor, Premnath’s brothers etc. I can add numerous names of the current generation, who had successful first films & medium-success in their next few films but could not produce hit films later in their career- IMO the biggest example being Kumar Gaurav (no hard feelings, I was mighty impressed by him in “Love Story” so many years back.

Hullo Atuldom
“Sirf Tum”- 1999 released; was a pure, soft romantic film. It was different from regular love stories. It had Sanjay Kapoor playing Deepak Rai & Priya Gill played Aarti. They never meet each other in person till the last scene. They get to know of each other through a strange incident. Deepak finds a bag/ envelope containing a girl’s certificates, bio-data etc. He finds the girl’s address and sends it by speed-post to her. Aarti is relieved on getting her documents & she sends him a “thank you” letter. This starts a chain of letters between the two. Deepak is employed in a firm that is headed by Neha (Sushmita Sen). She is impressed by Deepak and his straight-forwardness. She reveals her feelings for Deepak – to him. But he tells her that he is in love with a girl called Aarti whom he has never met. It is a story of “love that starts from the heart & not from the eye”.

We are in the month of November. This month sees a few beautiful ladies, who were crowned Miss India & also, who went on to grace the Silver Screen of Bollywood celebrate their birthdays. I am sure there would have been such beauties gracing other industries of regional cinema too, but my mind is a stuck on the Miss India/s of Hindi Films. A few days back it was Juhi Chawla & Aishwarya Rai’s birthdays, Zeenat Aman & Sushmita Sen’s will follow.

The main actors included Kiran Vairale, Ravi Baswani, Manju Mishra and Akhil Mishra with supporting actors consisting of Abhi Bhattacharya, Prem Kapoor, Bhuvan Singh, Suren Sharma, Master Rinku etc. The film is a romantic comedy written by Akhil Mishra who along with his wife, Manju Mishra produced the film apart from acting in the film. It was their first film as producers.

One of the finest actors to grace the silver screen in Indian cinema, she is best remembered for essaying some of the toughest roles with amazing grace, dignity and talent which seemed so natural in the multiple genres of characters she portrayed. A few months back, I stumbled upon a Blog on blogpost.com with a caption, ‘Arjun Hingorani’. This was the only post which was dated March 28, 2010. More or less the similar post appeared on wordpress.com with a caption, ‘Arujunhingorani’s Blog’. The Blog had only one post dated March 29, 2010, introducing himself as producer-director-actor and the spiritual author. His last qualification surprised me. So, I read the entire post in which he wrote about his early life in Jacobabad (Sind) before partition, the difficulties he faced after migration to India, his stint with Hindi film industry and finally turning to his spiritual journey to Vrindavan near Mathura where he spent his last years. I was familiar with his name since his film, ‘Kab? Kyon? Aur Kahaan?’ (1970) was released and about his film titles with ‘KKK’. It was only when I read his Blog post, I felt that he needed to find a place in our Blog.

Jaspinder Narula- a singer who is trained in Punjabi music, bhajans & Sufiana compositions initially stayed away from film singing. Under advice from Kalyanji (of the Kalyanji Anandji duo) she moved to Bombay (now Mumbai). Kalyanji’s son & music director Viju Shah, Anu Malik & Nadeem Shravan gave her, her first songs in ‘Bade Miyan Chote Miyan’; ‘Virasat’ and ‘Judaai’ respectively. She has sung around 150-200 songs in Hindi films. She has a unique voice that has a ‘good throw’; in the same fashion as Usha Uthup or Shamshad Begum. I don’t know if I am able to express my thoughts, regarding the voice quality she has correctly, but hearing today’s song will, hopefully, help me put my point across.

#the Decade of Eighties – 1981 – 1990 #

Today 14th November is celebrated as ‘children’s day’ in our country. It is also the birthday of our first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. He was very fond of children. While earlier every 14th November was celebrated being the birthday of Jawaharlal Nehru it was in 1954 that it was first time celebrated as ‘children’s day’ too. I was looking for a song for this occasion and I thought of this song which I like very much. It is from the movie “Hum Bachche Hindustaan Ke-1984”. In 1983-1985 I was staying at Akola with my grandparents. I was studying at Akola for my Std. 11th -12th. There we had a group of friends that also doubled as our cricket playing group. We used to watch ‘Chitrahaar’ on the ‘black and white-TV’ at the home of one of our friends home who was lucky to have TV at his home those days. 🙂

The main cast comprising of Manoj Vajpayee, Vanya Joshi, Lalit Parimoo, Anupam Shyam, Uttara Baokar, Utkarsha Naik, Kavita Rairath, Harish Khanna, Ashutosh Rana, Kishore Kadam etc.
