“Jeans” (1998) was a Tamil Film that was produced by Ashok Amritraj (the Indian-American athlete & film producer) in collaboration with Murli Manohar & others. It was directed by S. Shankar who usually works in the Tamil film industry beginning as an actor but turning a filmmaker initially as an assistant director & then full-fledged director with “GentleMan” (in Tamil 1993). #the Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #

(Lyricist – Naqsh Lyallpuri-4) (Debutant Movie)
———————————————————

We have seen in the past that some of the obscure movies, ‘B’ grade movies and even ‘C’ grade movies have given us many musical gems. This has been happening from the beginning of Hindi Film Music History.

The song under discussion is one such song, which according to me deserves to be a better known song, if not a well known song. Like most music lovers, I too was unaware of this song till recently. This song is from an obscure movie from the decade of seventies. The title of the movie is ‘Hazaar Haath-1978’.

While going through the filmography of the music director, Vanraj Bhatia recently, I found that he had done the music composition mostly for the off-beat or ‘middle of the road’ films, including those of Shyam Benegal’s films. Among his Bollywood masala films which are few, ‘Surkhiyaan’ (1985) was one of them which came as surprise to me because a couple of songs from the film which I had heard long back, sounded to me like that of R D Burman. The title of the film gave the hint that the story may have something to do with print media. With Naseeruddin Shah as a lead actor, I thought that the script of the film would be good for him to agree to work in the film. I watched the film a couple of days back on this assumption.

Hampi, one of the World Heritage Sites of India, was once the capital of Vijayanagar Empire in the 16th century and was the wealthiest city under the Empire. Most of the monuments had been damaged and the wealth looted by the then neighbouring sultanates in the war with Vijayanagar Empire. We had visited Hampi in January 2012 and stayed there for 4 days. Some monuments are still intact, and they are awesome so also the remains of the ruined monuments. The visit to Hampi momentarily gave us a feeling that we were in the memory lane of the Vijayanagar Empire of the 16th century as Hampi, now as a village, retains the charm of a bygone era.

About a decade ago, I had watched a Marathi film, ‘Katyaar Kaljat Ghusali’ (2015) in the very first week when it was released in a multiplex. The literal meaning of the film’s title in English is ‘a dagger speared the heart’. It was near houseful crowd with an overwhelming majority being senior citizens. Probably, most of them may have watched the play in the theatre during their younger days and they may be curious to watch in the cinematic form. The film still lingers in my mind, and I have watched all its songs umpteen times. It is one of the recent viewing of the songs from the film that has prompted me to write this article.
