Hullo Atuldom

This post is thanks to the reminder that came from an Atulite (on Whatsapp), that today would have been the 100th birthday of Omkar Prasad Nayyar better known as O.P.Nayyar to the film- music- loving public.

O.P. Nayyar was born in Lahore, which is now in Pakistan, on 16th January 1926 as one among four sons. According to information on the internet, all his brothers are doctors. He was married to Saroj Nayyar who was a stage dancer when she met OPN who was at that time a singer at Lahore Radio Station. The Nayyars are parents to three daughters and a son. One of his granddaughters or grand niece, Niharica Raizada an actress, was born in Luxembourg, was seen in the Rohit Shetty directed ‘Sooryavanshi’ in 2021 & ‘Total Dhamaal’ (2018) a Inder Kumar directed film.

O P Nayyar was active in the film world from 1949 when he gave the background score for ‘Kaneez’. Dalsukh Pancholi’s ‘Aasman’ (1952) was his first as music director. ‘Zid’ (1994) directed by Esmayeel Shroff was the last film with OPN’s music.

In between 1952 & 1994 (almost 42 years) OPN’s music was heard in 73 Hindi movies (according to this post by Atulji.
That post also gives the number of O.P. Nayyar songs yet to be posted as 97. Since then (2018) we have added 37 more songs i.e. around 60 filmy songs are yet to be posted.

In addition, we also have a movie titled ‘Teen Bahuraaniyaan’ in the blog released in 1968.

“Bahurani-1989” was directed by Manick Chatterjee for ‘Bemisal Films Pvt Ltd, Bombay’. Prem Lalwani and Mohan Lalwani were the producers of this movie and it was passed by Censor Board on 18.12.1989. Mukesh and his Composers – 45

Uncle Manohar Lal Sonik and nephew Om Prakash Sonik formed a composer-duo with the name Sonik-Omi and left behind some of the most memorable songs in HFM. However, in spite of their debut film Dil Ne Phir Yaad Kiya (1966) creating musical history and many other subsequent songs in other films becoming popular, their name and fame never reached the heights it ought to have.

Ishwar Bhakti (with Giridhar) (1951) and Mamta with Hansraj Behl (1952) were probably the two films wherein Sonik composed music without Omi.

Sonik experimented with singing and assisting other composers and later when Omi joined films, he too assisted other composers for some time.

Dil Hi Tho Hai (1963) under Roshan is probably the first film where they are credited as Assistant Music Directors as Sonik-Omi. In this film, B. L Rawal must have got to know the skills of the duo and in 1966 independently allotted them Dil Ne Phir Yaad Kiya (1966).

Today’s song is from a Mythological film Shri Ganesh Mahima aka Shri Krishna Vivah – 1950.

This is one Genre that I have my soft corner for. I like religious songs. I find bhajans by various artists from different films so enchanting to listen to. Seeing Religious or Mythological films attracted me as much as the ‘C ‘grade action/stunt films did. I used to go to the extreme corners of the city to watch such films in absolutely dilapidated old theatres, which were affordable for the lowest strata of the society. I used to get so engrossed in seeing the action films that the presence of the third grade public passing lewd and loud comments never disturbed me ! Similarly, visiting Theatres along with the old and the senior most family members, composed mainly of old ladies to watch mythological movies was an experience to remember till date ! Later on I realised these films also provided a lot of religious knowledge, in the formative years.

That occasion is here again. The occasion when we reach a blog century post and then start wondering which song to cover as the century song. This time, I had a genneral idea that which artists should figure in the sopng. Apart from that, I was just as unprepared for the occasion as I generally am whenever a blog century appears. Acting at the eleventh hour and 59th minute has become a habit with me it seems. 🙂
