Young kids growing up in India learn as much of their vocabulary from family members and friends as from Bollywood movies and songs. I learnt the meaning of “ladki pasand karna” for the first time when I heard my mother advising her brother (mama for me) to get married ( “Shaadi kar lo. Koi ladki pasand kar lo”).
As if on cue, this song ” maine ek ladki pasand kar li” started blaring on loudspeakers after a few days. And thanks to my newfound knowledge ( gained by overhearing my mother), I knew the meaning of the phrase “ladki pasand kar li”.

It is a joyous song that would cheer everyone up. How joyfully Rafi has sung this song ! We have seen some joyful Rafi songs in the past. This song is different from them all.
It is mind boggling to realise that there could be so many shades of joys, and that one could express one’s joy in so many different ways. The same lyricist has written songs of joy, but he does ot repeat his ideas from other songs of similar nature. It is amazing to realise that the same lyricst could come up with so many different songs for seemingly similar situations and make them look different.

Simple plain words can sometimes create good lyrics. And Gulzar was one lyricist who could create magical lyrics out of simple words, and here is a wonderful example of his lyrical wizardry. Follow the lyrics carefully, and one notices how well they express the feelings of joy that the lady is experiencing.
Lata has sung this song with some passion, and R D Burman has suitably tempered the exuberance of his music.

This was a song from a run of the mill movie starring Shashi Kapoor and Mumtaz. But before one knew, this song caught the imagination of the whole nation and the subcontinent.
Though this is supposed to be a light hearted wedding song, it has become much more than that. With suitable modification, it is used by people in the subcontinent for many occasions.

A cute song from 1973. Rekha, a raw teenager was an ugly duckling and an immature youngster at that time, who was not expected to go very far in Bollywood. She would later turn over a new leaf in 1978. But that was far off in the future. This movie was only her third movie, and here she was paired with a leading actor for the first time. Her earlier two heroes were debutants Navin Nischol and Randheer Kapoor.

A mast mast song from 1970s, that had everyone dancing on their feet. The song is great, sung wonderfully by Kishore and Lata, and it has a characteristic foot tapping music by R D Burman. It was filmed on the reigning heart throbs Rajesh Khanna and Mumtaz. And let us not forget the lyrics. It is the lyrics of Anand Bakshi, so simple, so effective, and so easy to sing that has made this song one of the perennial favourites for most Bollywood music lovers.

Do you need big pleasures in life to make you happy ? Then happiness may well elude you most of the time.
Blessed are those who get happy with small pleasures of life, for they will be happy most of the time.
Here is a nice song where down to earth real life like characters find lots of positives in their lives to cheer about and sing and dance about. This song will surely make you feel happy about life , notwithstanding all the problems associated with it.
