Blog 10-Year Challenge (2009-19) – Song No. 12

Ten years ago, this day in 2009, the film ‘Darling Darling’ made its debut on our blog. This 1977 production from Fortune Films International, has six songs. The song that brought in this film to our blog is the Kishore Kumar favorite – “Aise Na Mujhe Tum Dekho”.
Then, over the past decade, only one more song of this film was added. And now, in the 10 Year Challenge series, we are bringing on the third song of this film. An interesting side thought – maybe in the years to come, this blog and its data, relating to various stats, as well as patterns of how the films went from debut to yippee, will become fodder for PhD research projects at universities that have film studies departments. Research scholars will be analyzing such data to find correlations between the patterns of appearance of the songs of a film, and the perceived quality of its music, and its popularity curve. Interesting food for thought, right?

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2009-19) – Song No. 11

5th March, 2009. As many as nine song posted on that day. Of course, from 9 different films. And guess what, over the years, eight of these films have been yippeee’d already. The films are
- ‘Shahjehaan’ from 1946,
- ‘Munim ji’ from 1955,
- ‘Kaala Pani’ from 1958,
- ‘Goonj Uthi Shehna’ from 1959,
- ‘Umar Qaid’ from 1961,
- ‘Bin Baadal Barsaat’ and ‘Tere Ghar Ke Saamne’ from 1963,
- and then ‘Anubhav’ from 1971,
- and lastly ‘Raja Jaani’ from 1972.
Except for the last listed film above, all the other eight films that appeared on that day have all their songs posted here. And so the only option left to present a 10 year challenge post is a song from ‘Raja Jaani’ from 1972.

With this song, we introduce the film ‘Nai Zindagi’ from 1969. As I check the Geet Kosh listings, I find two more films with the same name – one from 1943 and the second from 1951. The 1943 film has Sheikh Mukhtar and Anees Khaatoon as the lead pair. In the 1951 movie, the lead pair is Nirupa Roy and Amarnath. The one in 1969 has Dev Kumar and Kumkum as the lead stars.

“Roomaal”(1949) was directed by Ramchandra Thakur for Varuna Films, Bombay. This “social”movie had Nargis, Rahman, Jeewan, Indu, Jairaj, Badri Prasad, Majnoo, Jillobai, Cuckkoo, Ramesh Thakur, Urwashi, Jankidas, Deepak, Pitu, Boy Ratan, Azim, Shamu, Mukesh, Sohanlal, Ahmad etc in it.

I wish all our readers a very Happy and cosmic MAHASHIVRATRI, to be celebrated today, i.e. 4th March 2019.
This is the one day in the entire year (barring Shravan Somvars) on which I become more religious and engage in pooja, listening to Shiv Bhajans and also do fasting. Our family was very religious. My father was a Sanskrit Scholar and had spent some time in Banares, giving religious sermons in the Kashi Vishveshar Temple during 1948-49. This was the time when he had gone underground to avoid arrest, as most Hindu Mahasabha leaders were arrested along with Savarkar, after Gandhi ji’s death. He was finally arrested and freed by the court “ba-izzat“. We came down to Hyderabad and he started practicing as a Lawyer as he was BA LLB.

With today’s song, we come to the end of this series of duets of Rafi Sb. This series got initiated on Rafi Sb’s birth anniversary (24th Dec) in 2017. Having gone through 33 episodes, we come to the closure with the Hindi alphabet letter ‘ह’. On the way, over the past almost 15 months, we have touched upon many a wonderful duet songs that simply perpetuate the legend of this divine voice. A blessing that we shared the same time and the planet with him for a certain period of time. The association, and its lasting awareness, has been such a lovely enchanting experience, that has left in the mind two opposing emotions – happiness and regret. Happiness that we have a wonderful legacy treasure bequeathed to us by this voice. And regret that there could have been more, but alas not destined to be. God works in his own mysterious ways, and we are but mortals subject to his method and his directions.

Today is 3 march 2019. No, I am not going to discuss a “blog ten year challenge” song today. This article covers a far bigger time span, namely 50 years. It was on this day 50 years ago, viz on 3 march 1969 that the first Rajdhani Express train left Howrah for New Delhi. This train had made its inaugural run from New Delhi on 1 march 1969 and had arrived Howrah on 2 march 1969. Its maiden journey from Howrah to New Delhi was on 3 march 1969, viz 50 years ago.

The title seems funny, isn’t it? Somehow, I find that the film makers give bizarre titles to their films sometimes. Films with prefix Mr. or Dr. were plenty. The earliest such a Talkie film was ‘Mr. 420’ made in 1937. Later, ‘Mr. X’ was made in 1938. This was repeated in 1957 and 1984. ‘Mr. X in Bombay’ was made in 1964. ‘Mr. India’ came in 1961 and also 1987. Blog 10-Year Challenge (2009-19) – Song No. 10

Today is 27 february 2019. The day is almost over and the first post of the day is just about coming up. Things were much different on this day ten years ago. On that day (27 february 2009), as many as seven songs were covered. Those were the days when I would discuss six or seven sog a day with ease, and a century of songs would come up in sixteen days or so.
Even I am surprised at the level of energy motivation and passion that I used to possess those days. 🙂
Coming to this day ten years ago, as many as seven songs were covered. Six of these movies have been YIPPEED by now. The only unyippeed movie from that day is “Kaajal”(1965).
