Blog 10-Year Challenge (2009-19) – Song No. 9
————————————————

Great idea this, the ten year challenge series. Works as a great reminder across the years and makes us pay attention to films and songs that have been waiting in the wings for a long time.

Today, I pick that lovely little film from 1965 – ‘Akashdeep’. It had made its debut on our blog ten years ago today – 26th Feb, 2009. Dharmendra was a very fresh face, just about four or five years into his career that year, and Nanda was somewhat senior. Ashok Kumar plays the role of a right thinking but apparently an abrasive mill owner and businessman, with Nimmi in the role of his mute wife. Mehmood plays the younger brother of Ashok Kumar, with Shobha Khote as his wife. Mehmood and his family lives separately from his brother, in relative poverty – he runs a small tea shop. The story of the film is woven around a village community where the mill is major work provider – the story of the workers in conflict with the wealthy capitalists. The film has a socialist message. Ashok Kumar’s intentions are always good, but he is impatient with the people who do not understand his viewpoint. After the conflict, the story comes to a happy ending with Ashok Kumar transforming the factory into a co-operative, giving equal shares to all the workers.

Hullo to all in Atuldom

I love masala movies as much as I love movies which are close to reality. I am of the opinion that movies should make us forget our daily tensions as much as entertain us. There were a few movie makers during my growing up years whose films were a must-see for my parents as they were entertaining as well as showed middle-class families and their ways. These movies were generally targeted towards family audiences – ‘Khoobsurat’ (1980), ‘Golmaal’ (1979), ‘Baaton Baaton Mein’ (1979), ‘Khatta Meetha’ (1977), ‘Chupke Chupke’ (1975) etc fell in this category and I must thank Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Basu Chaterjee for these gems.

Mohammed Rafi : The Incomparable (II) – Song No. 07
—————————————————

I remember during the radio days, whenever a non filmy song programme would start, we would shut down the radio.  Now it was time to play or to do some study seriously or even watch TV.  The time for all of these things was limited.  Entertainment was available only on its time with fixed hours and no more, because even if we were free the friends will be called home and play time was over.  Time spend with friends in the colony playing or just doing gup-shup was precious.

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2009-19) – Song No. 8
————————————————

When our dear Atul ji recently started an ‘innovative’ initiative under the ‘ten-year challenge’ or ‘Blog ten-year challenge’ I had mentioned it in my comments on the ‘first song’ in this series that, I would try to share lyrics if not articles as possible in this series. I had also mentioned that I could see a few opportunities for me in the coming days of this month. That was because I was browsing the posts of February’2009 on my own.

Today I have this opportunity to share a ‘song post’ under this series. And since its from ‘seventies’ I am happy to share it here.

Dedication 🙂

This article is dedicated to ‘males’ who are good at cooking, are good chefs (the professionals) 🙂 , and the non-professionals who can cook well for themselves (for their wives (sometimes) (?), and for their family members and/or friends 🙂 as and when required. 🙂
Also I would like to express my gratitude to all females too who cook food for their family members and do all the hard work to ensure the family members get to ‘eat’ and are’ happy’. 🙂

Greetings all – Basant is here. Today is the celebration of Basant Panchmi.

Of all the wonderful songs that have been created in Hindi films, for celebrating this King of Seasons, I would prefer to place this song today to be amongst the top five. Such a beautiful creation this is.

I myself had not heard of this song, till about five days ago. A friend in our circle enquired whether I had this song. He has been searching for it for some time now. Not being aware of it first hand, I said I will check. And when I located it in my collection, and then heard it for the first time, I am simply bowled over by the soft beauty and the delicious attractiveness of this song. The words, the music and the rendition have all come together in a conspiracy to steal your heart away.

When our dear Atul ji recently started an ‘innovative’ initiative under the ‘ten-year challenge’ or ‘Blog ten-year challenge’ I felt excited and browsed through some dates of February 2009 on the blog to check about the songs and the the movies which featured on these dates ten year back.

Today’s song is from film ‘Bhedi Bangla’ (1949). This film was produced by Anand Subramanyam, under the banner of Jagriti films, owned by Master Bhagwan. The story, dialogues and songs were by Ehsaan Rizvi and music was by P Ramakant. This was a name used by C Ramchandra, because he was under contract with Filmistan and could not give music in his own name. It started with Raja Nene’s film Shadi Se Pehle’ in 1947, in which he first used his assistant’s name Paingankar (the joint MD was Karnad). His name was Ramakant Paingankar and was assisting Chitalkar for a long time. Later, for Bhagwan’s films like ‘Bhedi Bangla’, ‘Bhole Bhale’ (1949), ‘Babuji’ (1950), and ‘Bakshish’ (1950) also, Chitalkar used the pseudo name P Ramakant as MD (information from Marathi Chitrapat Sangeetkar Kosh by Madhu Potdar).
