Today is 14 march 2018. It was on this day 87 years ago , viz 14 march 1931 that a movie that talked in Hindi (Hindustani) was shown for the first time in Bombay. In fact, the industry that would get created as a result would go on to influence not just Indians, but non Indians as well. The Industry, now called Hindi film industry or Bollywood is a shining example of the soft power that India has gone on to wield.

The sounds of his voice keep reverberating in the valleys of the mind – the voice that carries a million musical memories of an entire lifetime, unforgettable.
Today’s song in this series is a delightful exchange of young hearts in love. The film is ‘Salaam Memsaab’ from 1961. On screen, the song is performed by a very young Subiraj, and a very enchanting Kum Kum. It is always such a joy to watch Kum Kum on screen with that scintillating smile and the twinkle in the eyes that goes along with it. In a chirpy naughty mood, her expressions and her movements are such a pleasure to see. However, in this clip, I must say, her dance movements are just the typical signature dance steps of Bhagwan. Now Bhagwan is also in this film, and it is a matter of conjecture whether he had some say in the choreography and songs picurization. Maybe he did, the steps in this clip are so very much Bhagwan.

Today’s song is from the 1946 film ‘Alibaba’.
The story of ‘Alibaba And The 40 Thieves‘ has been entertaining the masses of the world since the 18th century. It is a part of the ‘ Arabian Nights’ stories. These stories have been the basis of films in almost every language in every country of the world, including China. But for a few large scale films, most such films fall under stunt / action / costume films or in short C grade films.

Today, March 8th is the 97th birth anniversary of Sahir Ludhianvi, one of my favourite poet-lyricists. Before him, there were other eminent Urdu poets such as Arzoo Lucknowi, Safdar Aah Sitapuri, Behzad Lucknowi, Josh Malihabadi etc who had been associated with the Hindi film industry sometime or the other. But it was Sahir Ludhianvi who clicked with the Hindi film industry as a poet and raised the status of the lyricists. Eventually, he created such a status for himself in the Hindi film industry that some of the established producers/directors first took him on board before finalising the music directors for their films.
