Suraiyya sang her first playback song for another actress at the age of 13. That was for Mehtab who was then 17 years of age. Mehtab (who incidentally was K Asif’s wife), on finding that her playback was being given by a 13 year old kid, got mad at her producers.

Most of the songs that Suraiyya sang in her career were picturised on herself. But there was a stage, in the beginning of her career,where she sang for other actresses too. It was during early 1940s.

“Station Master” (1942) is a movie that had Prem Adeeb and Ratnamala in lead roles. It was in this movie that Suraiyya, then 13 years of age, made her Hindi movie debut under the name of Baby Suraiyya. It was in this movie that she got to sung her first song, which was picturised on herself.

Mukesh was brought to Bombay (now Mumbai) in late 1930s by Motilal (a distant relative) who had seen him singing a song at Motilal’s sister’s wedding. While at Bombay, Mukesh got the opportunity to act and sing in a movie called “Nirdosh” (1941). This movie also had Nalini Jaiwant.It is interesting to note that Mukesh first acted in movies in 1940s, whereas his grandson (Neil Nitin Mukesh) is acting in movies more than six decades later. Most people are aware of the movie called “Nadiya Ke Paar” (1982) which was a Rajshree Productions movie. There was another movie of the same name that was released as far back as in 1948. This movie “Nadiya Ke Paar” (1948) was in fact a bigger budget movie and a mainstream movie unlike “Nadiya Ke Paar” (1982). “Nadiya Ke Paar” (1948) starred Dilip Kumar and Kamini Kaushal and by most indications, it was a commercial success.

In Indian mythology, viz Mahabharata, Subhadra was the sister of Lord Krishna and she got married to Krishna’s dear friend Arjun. There have been many Hindi movies about Krishna and about Arjun, but to the best of my knowledge, there has been only one movie on Subhadra.

I have discussed a song from “Saawan Aaya Re”(1949) in the past. Here is another song from this movie. The song shows a lady asking the man (Kishore Sahu) to marry her whereas the man who is having a parallel affair with her sister as well, naturally tries to stall her, asking her that there is all the time in the world for all that and one should rather spend that time in activities such and singing and dancing. On his prompting, this song and dance commences.

The technology of recording Hindi movie songs in the earlier decades was not very advanced. It was not possible to use the same recording for both the movie as well as the record companies, so the same song was recorded twice- once for the movie sound track, and another time for the record company.
