Under this series today we have this beautiful ‘Sufi Qawwali’ composed by C.Arjun and which is written by none other than Sahir Ludhianvi for the movie ‘Nawaab Sahib-1978’. I have vague memories of watching this movie in late seventies or early eighties, but I do not remember much about this movie or its story line. The only memory of this movie that I had carried over in my growing years and thereafter was this song ‘Hum Mein Hai Kya Ke Hamen Koi Haseena Chaahe’ sung by Mohd Rafi.

Yesterday, 16thJune 2017, was the 97th birth anniversary of singer- music director-producer-director Hemant Mukherjee alias Hemant Kumar. He started out his music journey in 1935 on All India Radio with “Amar Ganete Ele Nabarupi Chirantanii” under the influence of his friend Subhas Mukhopadhayay. Hemant Da’s music career was primarily mentored by the Bengali musician, Sailesh Duttagupta. In his early life Hemant Da used to follow the famous Bengali singer Pankaj Mullick. For this he was nicknamed as “Chhoto Pankaj”. In an interview on television in the early 1980s, Hemanta had mentioned that he had also received classical music training from Ustad Faiyaz Khan’s student Phanibhusan Banerjee.

“Buniyaad”(1972) was produced and directed by Virendra Sharma for Pragati Chitra International movie. The movie had Shatrughan Sinha, Farida Jalal, Yogita Bali, Rakesh Roshan, Bindu, Faryal, Pran, Jankidass, Sajjan etc in it.

“Dhamki”(1973) was produced by T H Shah and directed by Parwez Malik. It was a typical masala action movie of 1970s starring Vinod Khanna, Kumkum, Shyam Kumar, Helen, Meena T., Mehmood Junior, Bela Bose, Subhash Ghai, Ramesh Deo, Jayshree T.,Imtiaz, Ranjeet, Shetty etc in it.
