Today, the 18th of August, is the 76th birthday of Gulzar saab.
And, as I type 76th, I can’t help feeling that 1936 must have been a very special year. If I were selling wine and comparing Hindi film personalities with wine, I think I’d say 1936 could be right up there for best year for vintage wine of the 20th century. 🙂

On independence day, we had the birthday of Rakhi. Three days later, it is the birthday of her husband. Sampooran Singh Kalra, known just as Gulzar, was born on 18 august 1936. Few people today remember this movie called “Ahsaas” (1979). This movie was a quicky movie produced by G P Sippy in the interim period between his two big movies viz. “Sholay” (1975) and “Shaan”(1980). “Ahsaas” (1979) was produced with newcomers with names that no one had heard of. Who were the lead pair in this movie ? Frankly no one seems to recall including me. It was one of those few movies that I had watched first day first show ! And what a disaster of a movie it was. Now others who are into watching first day first show (FDFS), like for instance Santosh Ojha, watch blockbusters like “Trishul”. On the other hand, it is my misfortune to watch dud movies like “Ahsaas” (1979) and “Shalimaar” (1978) in FDFS. Bahut naainsaafi hai.

“Sunayna” (1979) was a Rajshri Productions movie which was inspired from Charlie Chaplin’s movie The citylights(1931). Charlie Chaplin’s movie was a silent movie even though the era of talkies has begun. Hindi movies cannot be silent by any stretch of imagination. And this movie had some lovely songs in it,including Naseeruddin Shah (playing Charlie Chaplin’s role) singing a romantic song(Sunayna sunayna..aaj in nazaaron ko tum dekho) for his lady love.

Yesterday (15 august 2012) was Indian Independence day. India had attained her independence on 15 august 1947.
By a unique coincidence, the Hindi movie actress Rakhi was born on that very day, viz 15 august 1947 ! Among all the midnight children (as Salman Rushdie would describe children born on that day in his best selling novel of the same name), Rakhi must be the most well known one. She is exactly of the same age as the nation of India !
