While watching our Hindi movies we carry some preconceived images of an actor/actors or actress/actresses based on roles they play in movies. It is quite common for an actor or actresses in Indian movies to get typedcast as an actor suitable only for ‘good’/‘positive’ or ‘bad’/‘negative’roles. So when we watch a movie, we expect an actor to play the same kind of stereotyped role that we have seen him play in the past. To come out of this stereotype successfully is a challenge and very few actors in Hindi film industry have been successful in shaking off their earlier image and being just as successful in their new roles.

My movie watching spree was at its peak during the year 1975 – 76. Mind you, in 1976 I had to appear for my school leaving certificate (the SSC board exam). But being a street smart teen with a knack for remembering most of the things that I came across, I always used to score good marks in my exams. Not that I stood in the top three in my class, but I was not in the bottom three as well. Hope you get my drift.
During the several morning shows I saw, missing my classes, I distinctly remember seeing Mazaaq because it was the movie which I saw on the penultimate day before the school closed for my half yearly exams. It was not a great movie that one can remember (as you can see from the synopsis below), but I had to see it as it was the new release on that day (Friday) and watching movies was my staple diet, so any movie would do.

This movie had Sachi, Sarika, Khyati (new discovey), Madan Puri, Manhar desai, Agha, Dhumal, Sundar, V Gopal, C S Dube, Madhup Sharma, Pardesi, Jugnu, Sriram, Surendra Singh, Prakash Mishra, Imtiaz Pagthan, Junior Mehmood, Urmila Bhatt, Leela Mishra, Minu Mahtab, Saroj Borkar, Padma Khanna etc in it.

“Amaanush”(1975) was produced and directed by Shakti Samanta for Shakti Productions, Bombay. The movie, based on a Bangla story by Shaktipada Rajguru, was made in Hindi as well as Bangla with the same actors. The movie had Uttam Kumar, Sharmila Tagore, Anil Chatterjee, Prema Narayan, Utpal Dutt, Abhi Bhattacharya, Manmohan, Asit Sen, Manik Dutt, Tarun Ghosh, Amol Sen, Subrotho Mahapatra, S N Bannerjee, Rajni Gupta, Probir Roy etc in it. The movie was a critically acclaimed as well as popular movie. The Bangla version of the movie is in fact counted as a classic in the annals of Bangla movies.

The new year 2018 began yesterday. We started celebrating the birthdays of artists from the first day of the year itself, by discussing a Nana Patekar song. Nana Patekar is one of many artists who chose the new year day to be born. 🙂
As far as our regulars are concerned, they are not too far behind. They are just one day behind Nana Patekar. As many as three of our regulars, namely Pradeep Raghunathan, Peevesie’s mom and Sheela ji(wife of Avinash Scrapwala) are celebrating their birthdays today on 2 january 2018. Less than a week ago, we were remembering the legend of legends amongst singers of the Hindi film industry, Mohammed Rafi, respectfully referred to by many as Rafisaab.
