KJ Yesudas – the bridge between South Indian and North Indian songs. Classical – both Carnatic and Hindustani, Light Music, Bhajan, and film music have been enriched by this maestro who turns a year older, today the 10th of January. Some people are omnipresent in our lives – Yesudas is one of them. We have grown up hearing him sing “Gori Tera Gaaon Bada Pyaara“, “Kaa Karoon Sajani Aaye Na Baalam“, “Dil Ke Tukde Tukde Karke Muskura Ke Chal Diye“, “Koi Gaata Main So Jaata” and numerous other songs. And for his fans who also understand other languages “Mayechi Sauli” from ‘Nanand Bhavajay’ (1991), and a few songs in Bengali, Oriya, and a few international languages too. I am not listing his songs from South Indian films that will be on the personal playlists of his fans.

Today 9th January’2022 is eighty-eighth birth anniversary of singer Mahendra Kapoor.
He was born on 9th January’1934 and passed away on 27th September’2008.
We remember him on this occasion and pay our tributes by listening to a song sung by him here on this blog. I am a big fan, if not a great fan, of Mahendra Kapoor songs.

Hullo Atuldom
This post is courtesy my youngest sister. We were on this telephonic chat and she was asking me about my new hobby/addiction and how it is coming by. In the conversation she mentioned about the how she appreciated Dilip Kumar in the song”Nain Lad Jaihe To Manwaa Maa Kasak Hoibe Kari” – his dancing to be more exact. She spoke about how the dance was almost continuous like a single shot song. And my reply to her was that the song from “Jewel Thief”Hothon Mein Aisi Baat Main Dabaa Ke Chali Aayi” is an ideal example of a song in a single-shot and how Vyjayanthimala has danced and cameras were strategically placed to catch every movement and moment. To this my sister replied that being a trained classical dancer it would not have been so difficult for Vyjayanthimala but see Dilip Kumar dance in ‘Ganga Jamna’.

Today’s song is from the 1969 movie ‘Sambandh’. I was aware of this ‘title’ since my childhood and I mainly associated this movie with its song ‘Chal Akelaa Chal Akelaa Chal Akelaa, Tera Mela Peechhe Chhoota Raahi Chal Akelaa’. I have a big nostalgia of this song, and whenever I listen to it the song takes me to a different world altogether. This song brings back many memories of childhood for me.

Today’s song is from the film ‘Dekho Jee’ (1947).
The year 1947 is a reminder not only for the Independence of India, but also for the upheaval that took place in the film industry that time. More than in any other industry in India, Muslims were plentiful, working in different sections and departments of the Hindi film industry. majority of them migrated to the newly formed Muslim Nation of Pakistan. This did create a lot of disturbance in the film industry. Right from the beginning of 1947, there were signs that soon the British would leave India – after dividing it into two Nations, India and Pakistan. When the month and date became known for the Partition, there was a great hurry among the filmmakers to complete their projects on hand and in process, compromising many factors like quality of the film, number of songs and such other things.
