“Asli Naqli” that was released in 1986 was directed by Sudarshan Nag. It had a star cast of Shatrughan Sinha- Anita Raaj- Raadhika- Rajnikanth- Amrish Puri- Shakti Kapoor -Ashok Kumar. It had a normal storyline wherein as boy is separated from his wealthy parents in childhood. His parents have only one clue of him- a locket that he is wearing. Upon his father’s death the mother embarks on a mission to trace out her long-lost son with the help of (typically named) Durjan Singh (Amrish Puri). Durjan Singh and his son Shakti Singh (Shakti Kapoor) plant Birju ustaad (Rajnikanth) as the son with the sole motive of plundering the wealthy widow. Then Shatrughan Sinha steps-in and the plot spices up. Further the ladies are there for the song and dance routines. Essentially what this movie had was two superstars with stylised acting and the public had a paisa-vasool feeling. It had a decent run at the box-office.

Only yesterday I saw a rather old episode of the TALK SHOW – back then they used to call it interview (simple)- “Phool Khile Hain Gulshan Gulshan” which Tabassum used to host. I am sure all movie/ music lovers would have seen at least one episode on Friday evenings (I think). I used to try and see it without fail. But the episode (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MFFwOfs1IWw) I saw yesterday on YouTube I don’t recollect having seen in 1983. Just as well since; when I saw it yesterday it was an eye opener. It featured Anand Bakshi the lyricist.

Or Raka. or Gajendra Singh or Halaaku. He had his own style of blowing smoke rings which first appeared in Bari-Behan (1949). He was sinister to the extent that people would not name their new borns – Pran. His name always appeared in the movie credits as “And Pran”.

Today 6th January 2017 is the thirtieth death anniversary of Composer Jaidev.
We pay our tributes to him, and on this occasion we enjoy a ‘story-telling’ song from the 1976 movie “Laila Majnu”. Jaidev shared the music credits for this movie with Composer Madan Mohan who left us when the movie must be on its completion work since it was released in the next year 1976.

So now we are all busy discussing the pros and cons of the demonetisation on our WhatsApp group. We are also having a fair number of jokes on the subject. But as our dear thandapani mentioned last week when our PM dropped the demonetisation bomb (as I like to call it) I have also decided to wait and watch for the rush at the banks and cash ATMs. At such a time a few songs ran through my mind. Let us have one of them today.

There are many movies which come and disappear becoming forgotten over time. It is such movies that take time to make their debuts on our blog. This movie “Kaun Hai Woh?” (1983) is one such movie. Its songs are not available on YouTube. Its artists are no longer in the limelight and the movies songs lie in the dust with some collectors.

“Jaani Dushman”(1979) was produced and directed by Rajkumar Kohli. The movie had received enormous publicity before its release. It was a multistarrer movie, though the stars who mattered to be those days, viz. Amitabh Bachchan, Vinod Khanna and Dharmendra did not figure in the movie. I still remember my school days when our cricket playing group used to meet every evening at the Colony recreation club. After going through the newspapers/ magazines in the library, we would hold discussions on various topics. Hindi films and their songs were naturally among the topics of discussions.
The discussions then were only in general terms and nowhere near as serious or detailed as the discussions on this blog now. We used to discuss the songs we liked and why we liked them, or songs that were popular and how one ranked them in order of our likings etc etc.

So we have now reached 11200 songs on the blog. I remember there were various things happening, same time last year. We were on our road to 10000. We were having a series running which was introducing each and every contributor of the blog. The most silent character in our Atuldom (as far as sending contributions to the blog in the form of posts or write-ups) has reached 900. Wow!
