Before she burst on to the Bollywood scene with C.I.D. (1956) and Pyaasa (1957), Padma Bhushan Waheeda Rehman starred in two movies each in Telugu and Tamil including, as the second heroine, in the D. Yoganand directed Anjali Devi-A. Nageswara Rao starrer 1955 Telugu production Jayasimha. It was later dubbed in Hindi by P. Ramesh Naidu and released as Jai Singh in 1959.

“Bluffmaster” (1963) was produced by Subhash Desai and directed by Manmohan Desai. It had Shammi Kapoor, Saira Bano, Lalita Pawar, Niranjan Sharma, Pran, Mohan Choti, Laxmi Chhaya, TunTun, Rashid Khan, Shyam Lal, Charlie Walker, Jugal Kishore, Anand Joshi, Santhosh Kumar etc in it.

“Veer Durgadas” (1960) was a historical movie based on the life of Veer Durgadas Rathode , a respected historical figure of Rajasthan. The movie was a Lak Bharati Chitra production. It was directed by Ramchandra Thakur. The movie had Nirupa Roy, Manhar Desai, Jairaj, P.Kailash, RajKumar, S.N.Tripathi, Babu Raje, Prem Sagar, Poonam, Champak lala, Narbada Shankar, Ajit, B.M.Vyas, Bagla,Kumari Chand, Suryakant Shukla, Sukumar,Mahendra, Sri Bhagwan, Ramlal Pehlwaan, Nazir Kashmiri, Hamid, Raajwade, Vinay Mukaale, Bhimjee Bhai, Damodar etc in it.

Indians in the past decades tended to suffer from low self esteem, because India as a country was a “developing nation”, a euphemism for a poor and underdeveloped nation. It was not uncommon for movies to reflect that. Tragedy movies did well at the box office. The hero typically would get bashed up at the hands of the villain throughout the movie.
