Pancham’s Music – Eighties-to-Nineties (1981-1994…) Duets-7
Today’s Pancham composed duet is from the movie ‘Bahurani-1989’. I am not sure if I had watched this movie. It appears a familiar movie but I have no recollections about this movie. On our blog we already have movies with this title that were released in the years 1940, 1950 and 1963. Today’s ‘Bahuraani’ will be the fourth such title on this blog and it is from the year 1989. In addition, we also have a movie titled ‘Teen Bahuraaniyaan’ in the blog released in 1968.
“Bahurani-1989” was directed by Manick Chatterjee for ‘Bemisal Films Pvt Ltd, Bombay’. Prem Lalwani and Mohan Lalwani were the producers of this movie and it was passed by Censor Board on 18.12.1989. The cast of this movie has Rekha, Rakesh Roshan, Utpal Dutt, Usha Kiran, Rakesh Bedi, Deven Verma, Urmila Bhatt, Guddi Maruti, Aasha Sharma, Darshan, Inderjeet, Sunder, Aruna Irani and others. Gyandev Agnihotri is the writer of this movie and its Editing was done by Sudhanshu Chakraborty.

Mukesh and his Composers – 45
Uncle Manohar Lal Sonik and nephew Om Prakash Sonik formed a composer-duo with the name Sonik-Omi and left behind some of the most memorable songs in HFM. However, in spite of their debut film Dil Ne Phir Yaad Kiya (1966) creating musical history and many other subsequent songs in other films becoming popular, their name and fame never reached the heights it ought to have.
Ishwar Bhakti (with Giridhar) (1951) and Mamta with Hansraj Behl (1952) were probably the two films wherein Sonik composed music without Omi.
Sonik experimented with singing and assisting other composers and later when Omi joined films, he too assisted other composers for some time.
Dil Hi Tho Hai (1963) under Roshan is probably the first film where they are credited as Assistant Music Directors as Sonik-Omi. In this film, B. L Rawal must have got to know the skills of the duo and in 1966 independently allotted them Dil Ne Phir Yaad Kiya (1966).

After that qawwali like fusion wedding song from “Bombay”, I remembered a few filmy qawwalis from the 21st century. Several of them are composed by ARR, so there is a possibility of at least one more qawwali in that series. There is another one from the 90’s which should follow in the next few days.
After the top one “Na to karwaan ki talaash hai” many people consider “parda hai parda hai” to be second most liked and famous qawwali in Rafi Sahab’s songs. I am sceptical about this rating. I have personally always liked “pal do pal ka saathh hamaara” and “Hai agar dushman” better than the hugely popular “Parda hai parda hai”. This qawwali is performed in most of the shows of Rafi Sahab songs. That is fine, as someone remarked, that it is a more engaging one and singers enjoy performing it. That makes it a favourite for the singers too. So, it has somethings going for it. I just wish that the singers try other equally appealing and engaging qawwalis too. All of them are trying to touch the benchmark, in playback singing left by Rafi Sahab. Some say that the textbook is written, and ink dried, and they just need to open the pages and try and absorb.

‘Daasi’ (1944) was produced under the banner of Pradhan Pictures and was directed by Hiren Bose. The cast included Najam-ul-Hasan and Ragini in the lead roles supported by Kalavati, Khairati, G N Butt, Charlie, Om Prakash, Gyani, Fazal Shah, Manzoor etc. The story of the film was written by Dalsukh Pancholi. I have strong reason to believe that Pradhan Pictures was Dalsukh Pancholi’s ‘ghost’ banner as I find his name on the Censor Certificate as applicant.
The film’s lead actor, Najam-ul-Hasan (in the credit title of the film, his name is spelled as Najam Hussain) became well known for an incidence while working in the Bombay Talkies film, ‘Jeevan Naiyya’ (1936) as a lead actor opposite Devika Rani, wife of Himanshu Rai, the founder of the Bombay Talkies. During the making of the film, Najam-ul-Hasan eloped with Devika Rani to Calcutta (Kolkata). While Devika Rani was convinced by Sashadhar Mukerjee to return to Bombay Talkies, Ashok Kumar who was working in the Bombay Talkies as a laboratory assistant got a chance to work as a lead actor opposite Devika Rani, replacing Najam-ul-Hasan.

‘Bandhan Baahon Kaa’ (1988) was produced by O P Bajaj and Mahendra Mansinghka and was directed by Govind Munis. The cast included Raj Kiran, Swapna, Brahmachari, Hullad Muradabadi, Rajesh Puri, Avnish Pratap, Manoj Tiwari, Rita Katyal etc. The film was based on a short story, ‘Kariye Chhima’ by Hindi novelist, Shivani (real name: Gaura Pant). In Kumaon language, ‘Chhima’ is a derived word from ‘Kshama’ (forgiveness). It appears that the film had a delayed release as the song album was released in 1985 with the film’s original title, ‘Kariye Kshama’.

(Music Composer R.D. Burman’s Remembrance Anniversary)
——————————————————————
Today 4th January’2026 is the 33rd Remembrance Anniversary of Rahul Dev Burman fondly known as Pancham.
Rahul Dev Burman was born on 27th June 1939 and he passed away on 4th January 1994 at the age of just 54.
On this occasion we are presenting songs composed by Pancham that had not been covered before. In this post we cover a song from the 1987 movie ‘Itihaas’, which is a lesser known movie that has been forgotten with time.
‘Itihaas-1987’ was an unsuccessful movie in terms of box-office success. It was directed by V. Joshi for ‘Navjeevan Productions Pvt. Ltd., Bombay’. Tito was the producer of this movie which was passed by Censor Board on 30.01.1987. Sources mention that this movie was a remake of director V. Joshi’s own movie ‘Itihasam-1981’ in Malayalam and remade in Tamil as ‘Theerpu’ in the year ‘1982’.
The cast of the Hindi movie ‘Itihaas-1987’ had Raaj Kumar, Shabana Azmi, Rati Agnihotri, Anil Kapoor, Mohnish Behl, Danny Denzongpa, Suresh Oberoi, Nameeta Chandra, Dinesh Hingoo, Master Suresh, Hanifa, Ramesh Goel, Prema Narayan, Leena Das, Iftekhar, Jalal Agha, Raj Mehra and others. Screenplay of this movie was written by Gyandev Agnihotri, and its dialogues were written by Krishan Dehlvi. N.S. Bedi was the dialogue director for this movie. Waman Bhonsle & Gurudutt Shirali was the editors of this movie.
