The movie “Kohinoor” (1960) could also be called Kohe naghma, or a treasure trove of great songs. This movie has one great song following another great song. I have so far discussed six songs from this movie and there are more to come !

The first Hindi movie made by an NRI (non resident India) was “Shalimar” (1978) by Krishna Shah which was made with great publicity and fanfare and it was thought that the movie was going to be another “Sholay”, if not bigger. When finally the movie was released, it turned out that the movie was huge let down. The movie failed to last for more than one week in the movie halls.

“Yahudi” (1958) is a movie starring Sohrab Modi,Dilip Kumar and Meena Kumari. This movie, as the name suggests, is a historical mythological movie of the Roman era of 2000 years ago, where Dilip Kumar plays Roman prince Marcus and Meena Kumari plays a jew called Hannah. Here is a song from “Basant Bahaar” (1956) that I may have heard in the past but without paying much attention. This time, when I got the lyrics of this song (sent by nahm), I paid close attention to the lyrics. While doing that , one cannot but help pay attention to the singing and the music as well. And while doing that, one realises that this song is an unparalled combination of sensational singing, superb lyrics and wonderful music.

On checking, I found that I had not discussed this song, rather I had discussed the other well known song from this movie sung by Mukesh (Main dhoondhta hoon jinko ).

“Mausam” (1975) is a movie that is known as much for the acting of Sanjeev Kumar and Sharmila Tagore as for its music. Unfortunately Madan Mohan, the music director of the movie was not alive to see the success of this movie. For much of his life, movies embellished by his wonderful songs would bite the dust as the box office, and ironically, the movies released after his death, viz “Mausam” (1975) and “Laila Majnu” (1976) turned out to be hit movies riding on the music of these movies.

Here is a lovely “maanjhi”(boatman) song with a difference. The song is very much a boat song, in the sense that Asha Parekh, looking young and pretty, is standing on a boat in a river and singer this song. And she is singing about “maanjhi”, but here “maanjhi” does not mean the boatman, but it means the man who will steer her destiny. Yes, she is singing this song about her beloved (Sunil Dutt).
