Is there another song for selling newspapers? I cannot off hand recall one. This one I do remember – film ‘Dooriyaan’, year is 1979, and this film I remember seeing on the big screen.

Achala Sachdev (born 3 may 1920- died 30 april 2012) died yesterday. She was 91 and she was three days short of completing 92 years. She started her film career at a young age, as a child actor in fact, but it is as a filmy mother that she is remembered the most.

When Atul wrote to me in his usual polite way the other day that I must write a post on this song I was taken aback. I have been a (mostly silent) reader of his blog and I have even written a few pieces for it but none for a very long time. Perhaps he thought I might like to do this piece on Don’s “Khaike paan banaraswala” as most of my early pieces were on Amitabh Bachchan’s movies of that era as I am an unabashed AB fan. What he did not know when he wrote to me is that I had another “qualification” for doing this piece; I studied for five years in Banaras.

My last few posts have been about songs of the 1970s. As I’ve explained before, this is only because I find it easier to talk about that decade. Some golden-era film and music lovers may even like to call it the decadent decade 😉 – and they would not be entirely wrong, in my opinion.

Simti huyi ye ghadiyaan

Last night, on our way back home after attending a marriage reception, I heard a song ‘simti huyi ye ghadiyaan’ in a FM Radio channel in our car. I had heard this song a few years back but I was not able to recall the name of the film, lyricist and music director except that I could recognise the voices of Lata Mangeshkar and Mohammed Rafi. After getting nowhere to seek the answer, I asked my sister who was travelling with me and who has a good knowledge about old Hindi film songs, whether she knew about the song. Initially, she thought that I was testing her knowledge on the old Hindi film songs. It was only when I said in all seriousness that I did not know anything about this song other than the singers that she started applying her mind on my question.

It is another of my absolute favorite songs and movies. I actually have a superstition that if I see a Hrishikesh Mukherjee Movie on the morning of an exam or an important day, the day will go well. Golmaal(1979) is a movie that came regularly in the morning 6 am slot in SAB Tv and SET MAX while I was in school and thus went on to be a much by-hearted film. In fact I remember when my cousins were 2 yrs old and I called my aunt one day, she told me that they were watching this movie. I replied that I am extremely proud of her, she is giving them the right education and they will grow up to be like me. She laughingly said that then I will shut the movie right away.

“Us Paar” (1974) is an obscure movie by now, even though this movie is a recent movie by the standards of this blog. This movie was a Cine Eye Films Production. It was produced and directed by Basu Chatterji. The movie had Vinod Mehra, Mausami Chatterji, Raja Paranjape, Padma Khanna, Jalal Agha, Lalita Kumari, Paintal, A.K.Hangal etc in it.

At any moment of time, I have lots and lots of contributions lying with me for discussion and I am unable to cope with them satisfactorily. I just realised that it is like sitting on a pile of gems and not finding time to appreciate them.

Yesterday, I was showing off my knowledge to a couple of regulars of this blog in private by telling them that “Chor Machaaye Shor”(1974) had six songs, and five of them were very well known, but the sixth song was quite less known. Then I boasted that I was going to post this rare song in the blog today.
