The song being discussed in this post is a multiple version song. In the female version song, the lady pulls the leg of the gentleman by mocking him. In the male version of the song, the gentlleman returns the compliment.
This song is from the movie ‘Maine Jeenaa Seekh Liyaa-1959’. Male version is sung by Mohd Rafi and the female version is sung by Asha Bhonsle. As per the song list of this movie in Geet Kosh the Asha Bhonsle version appears first (if the HFGK song list is in the order in which the songs appear in the movie) and the Rafi version happens later.
‘Maine Jeenaa Seekh Liyaa’-1959, a social movie, was directed by Satish Nigam for Filmistan Limited, Bombay. This movie was passed by the Censor Board on 10.12.1959.
The cast of this movie had Ameeta, Ravindra Kapoor, Durga Khote, P. Kailash, Badri Prasad, Agha, Savita Chatterjee, Lata, Sushil Kumar, Murad, Noorjahan, Narbada Shankar, Tiger (Dog), Munshi Khanjar and others. This movie has eight songs contributed by two lyricist viz. Anand Bakshi and Rahil Gorakhpuri. Both of them wrote four songs each for this movie.

When Atul started his alphabetical series of actresses who have lip-synced to Asha Bhosle’s voice, I suggested the names of some actresses who were missing from the list. I also sent the respective songs. Amala’s name was on my list, along with the song “Step by Step” from Dost (1989). When I asked Atul if he would mind my writing a post on the song, he replied that he would welcome it. This is how this contribution of mine came about after a long hiatus from this resourceful blog.
I became aware of Amala through her first Hindi film, Pushpak (1987). The film made quite a splash in the Hindi film industry, as it was a silent movie released in the middle of a decade that was full of very loud films. I did not have the chance to watch it in a cinema hall at the time. Amala looked quite different from the usual Hindi heroines of that era. In her interviews, she came across as a very sympathetic person who was actively involved in efforts against cruelty to animals. This brings us to the plot of the movie in question.

I present one of the most popular ghazals, ‘kal chaudhveen kee raat thhee’ (1979) composed and rendered by Jagjit Singh. The ghazal is written by Jalandhar-born Pakistani poet, humourist, journalist and travel writer, Ibn-e-Insha (1927-1978).
I had a faint memory of this ghazal sometime in 1980s but at that time, there were other popular ghazals of Jagjit Singh which have remained in my memory like ‘ishq mein ghairat e jazbaat ne rone na diyaa’, ‘duniyaa jise kehte hain’, ‘baat niklegi to phir door talak jaayegi’, etc. It is only during the last 2-3 years that I have listened to this ghazal online umpteen times and have started admiring this ghazal for its soulful rendition.
