Today, the 4th of August, is a day we celebrate as the birth anniversary of one of Hindi film industry’s undoubted geniuses, Kishore Kumar.
The term “genius” tends to get thrown around rather loosely and frequently nowadays, much like terms like “legend” and “great”. This is all the more reason why I am rather cautious when I use it and certainly don’t throw it around.
Having said that, I have absolutely no hesitation in using it for Kishore Kumar (or Kishoreda as he is fondly referred to by his friends and fans). Kishore da was one of those rare individuals who tried his hand at many dimensions of the industry – and left a mark with most of them. In a sense, he can be called a true harfan maula of the industry.

This is a song from a Raj-Nargis film Bewafa-52 and it is sung by Talat Mahmood.
It is not very common that Talat sang for Raj Kapoor. Raj was convinced that only the voice of Mukesh suited him, so in all the films that he produced or directed, he used to try using Mukesh for his songs. However,as a true Professional, if he were to work for some other producer or under a different Director, he followed the policy of strict Non-interference. So, in such films, we see other singers giving playback to Raj Kapoor, depending on the choice of the producer or director. Talat sang a total of ten songs for Raj Kapoor in 4 films, as following-

Here is a tuneful duet of Noorjehan and Surendra from the 1944 ‘Bombay Cinetone’ film ‘Lal Haveli’. The other duet, by the same pair, from this film, will follow soon on this blog. (Hari ichchha permitting.) Naushad’s Guru Meer Saheb has set the tunes to the simple lyrics of Shams Lakhnavi.

एक सागर है, आवाज़ का, जिसमे डूबे ही रहने को मन करता है।
These are times to be thankful. And to feel blessed. That we are living in the times when this treasure of music was created. We continue to search and explore and continue finding gems, obscure gems, unheard gems, lost gems – songs that were once created with a lot of enthusiasm and zeal. Yes, these are times to feel blessed that these gems are available and accessible. I am really anxious about the day, and shrink away from the thought – the day when we will have no more songs of Rafi Sb to post. Life will continue, no doubt. It has a relentlessness built into it. But then, we will be carrying with us, an emptiness – that there are no more “unheard” songs to search for.

Mohammed Rafi : The Incomparable – Song No. 10
—————————————————
Remembering Rafi Sahab on his 35th death anniversary :
When I heard this song for the first time a few days ago, I was looking for a Roshan song to post on 14th July for the birth anniversary of the maestro. This song when heard properly, is surely a masterpiece by its creators. I promptly wrote a post and sent it to Atul ji and Sudhir Sir, without checking properly if I got the correct ‘Roshan’. As it turned out this song is composed by Roshan Lal Khatri, and not Roshanlal Nagrath, whose birth anniversary it was on 14th July.

Today is the 31st of July 2015.

“Mujhko mere baad zamaana dhoondhegaa”.
“Caravaan guzar gaya gubaar dekhte rahe”.
These were words that proved to be prophetic. In the monsoon of 1980 we had to bid good bye to The Mohd. Rafi.
It has been 35 years since Mohammad Rafi left this world. Unbelievable. Our statistics page says that there are around 4845 songs sung by him in Hindi films. (Wikipedia puts a figure of around 5000). And we are past 2400 (as per the latest updation). So we still have around 2400 songs to go. That means fodder for our blog for another few years I suppose. And all the fans of Rafisaab in our Atuldom can get to work to reach out to all his songs. It is actually not that difficult a job.
