Blog Day :

4749 Post No. : 16484

So. Finally it is official.

We are teenagers now, the first step into the growing up years. The childhood years left behind and now the coming of age years are starting.

What started off as a ‘let’s-try-it’ hobby run with the simplest of the simple philosophical musings – “Miley Na Phool To Kaanton Se Dosti Kar Li“, has come of age today and has blossomed into a huge tree with thousands of branches spread out, with roots that are deep and strong, and are full of conviction. A tree that provides shade in terms of solace to the lovers of music, which in turn are spread out all over the globe. This is the world tree of music and songs. This is a tree that has a flavor for every palate, a tree that has fruits of everlasting tastes for the connoisseurs, a tree that conserves and perpetuates that enchanting phenomena that is the lovely Hindi Film Music – this is a tree that has many different meanings and many different treasures for the seekers of pleasure in music. There is a whole universe of music that has  settled itself around this tree. Although the desires abounded for flowers, but when none were forthcoming this direction, the protagonist settled for the proverbial thorns to start with. That humble gesture ensured that flowers of all shades and colors, and also, flower bearers of all tastes and wonders, kept on coming together one by one, till a complete orchestra of performers was formed, and the bandwagon got its name.

Thirteen years and counting. And if you talk of counting, here are some counts that will really make you happy with wonder.

Do you know that we have a visitor to this blog, every thirty seconds – the total count (and still counting) is upwards of 14.5 million visitors. Now that is a number to really wonder about.

Do you know that we have been averaging quite, quite close to one new film per day since the inception of this blog. 4749 days today and 4480 films showcased. And oh yes, that is not counting the Non-Film songs categories. Adding them categories, we shall surely be at 1+ new film or new non-film song category per day. Isn’t that a wow that makes one feel like flying.

Do you know that the average daily rate of posting is upwards of three posts per day. Try doing that seven days a week, 365 days a year, and continuously at that rate for 13 years. Try writing a letter each to three friends every day, day on day, for 13 years. My, does that no yet boggle the mind.

And that is where the superlatives start ceasing to have an impact.

13 years – 4,749 days – 16,484 posts. . .

And just ONE person.  Now isn’t that something to boggle the google. Especially when we know it is a labor of love, and that it is not an endeavor for remuneration. Ah yes, it does finally boil down to love. As does of course, everything else in this universe.

That one person, carrying the entire earth on his shoulders, like the legendary Atlas. Not pausing for even a day to rest. Of course yes, there have been rarities that we have had dot days. But in the final count, the averages will speak for themselves. No matter how many runs and how many centuries – double, triple – any other batsman has scored, the Don Bradman remains the Don Bradman when the averages are calculated.

Atul ji, over the years that we have been associated for this endeavor, we have completely used up all the possible epithets and adjectives to address our appreciation of your work. And now, we are at a loss to articulate this emotion any further. And will finally end up saying these lines that I borrow from another legend – ABBA,

So I say
Thank you for the music, the songs I’m singing
Thanks for all the joy they’re bringing
Who can live without it? I ask in all honesty
What would life be?
Without a song or a dance, what are we?
So I say thank you for the music
For giving it to me

And not just to me – to this entire world, a compilation that is sans any peers. Who would have thought it could have been possible. Your own words have been that your earliest flights of imagination brought you to a number of maybe 2,500. And that then you would rest.

Aah, but for the passion this ignited, within yourself, and within this motley crew of the musical bandwagon. The counter is ticking oh so close to 16,500 posts. And not a day’s breather seems to be in view. Mightier and stronger and higher we ride the Olympian altitudes. And the bandwagon keeps chugging along, day on day, week on week, month on. . .

I just thought of taking a look at the date of 19th July across our travels. We have had a total of 68 posts that have been celebrating this anniversary, after the intial 19th July post of 2008. Seven posts in 2009, 4 posts in 2010, 5 posts in 2011, 6 posts in 2012, 5 posts again in 2013, then on to 7 posts once again in 2014, 5 posts in 2015, and wow, a whopping 8 posts in 2016, back to 4 posts in 2017, aah – 3 posts in 2018, 4 posts in 2019, back up to 6 posts in 2020, and then today, 4 posts again to celebrate this wondrous milestone. With songs posted across the entire spectrum of decades, from 1936 all the way up to 2002, the celebrations of this anniversary have been multifarious and varied.

Ah but let me not bore you with any more statistics and analyses. And bring you to this song for the celebration today.

Geeton Ka Sansaar Yahaan Par

Took me a while to locate this wonderfully complementary theme song for this celebration. And for its rarity, it is – sorry, it was not yet available online. The film is ‘Nai Reet’ from 1948. The film itself makes a debut on our blog today.

The film has been produced under the banner of India Film Corporation, Bombay and is directed by Shubh Karan Ojha. This relatively obscure film that probably did not garner much attention and box office receipts when it was released in 1948, has the cast listed as Sulochana Chatterjee, Geeta Bali, Rajendra, Krishankant, Tiwari, Badri Prasad, Tara Bai, Leela Mishra, and Ramesh Sinha. Most names are familiar, and I am sure the full cast would be carrying more names.

The film has 8 songs in total. All the songs are written by a team of two songwriters in collaboration – Bal Krishan Gupta and Ratan Kumar Gupta. The footnote that is carried in the Geet Kosh, succinctly states that – “As per the information recieved from Lyricist Bal Krishna Gupta all songs this film were written by both Lyricists working together, i.e. `Kumar-Gupta` (Ratan `Kumar` Gupta + Bal Krishna `Gupta`. However the records carry the name as `Kumar Gupta`.” So by this input, we would also use the lyricist’s name as Kumar-Gupta.

The music is by SK Pal, and the singing voice is that of Meena Kapoor.

And the words – they oh so well sum up the emotions of this celebration today – that here is a universe of songs that has been put together for us.

गीतों का संसार यहाँ पर
मुसकानों का मेला है
पत्ती पत्ती झूम रही
हर फूल में जादू फैला है

A world of songs is here
It is a festival celebration of smiles
Every leaf is swaying with delight
There is a joyous magic spread through every flower

मैं भी अपनी झोली लाई
भर लेने को बिखरी दौलत
मैं भी दौड़ी दौड़ी आई
क्या छोड़ूँ क्या चुन लूँ इस में
लगता बड़ा झमेला है

In haste I come here
To gather this treasure spread about
I try to garner it all in my arms
And the mind is in a dilemma
What all shall I take
And what all shall I leave

एक अनोखा बाग है दुनिया
सुन्दर सुन्दर प्यारा प्यारा
मानो मीठा राग है दुनिया
पागल मन मेरा मस्ती में
कली सा खिल खिल खेला है

What a joyful garden this world is
So beautiful and lovely
The whole world is a sweet melody
And my mind is untamed in passion
Blossoming like new buds playing

Yes, all these emotions run through the mind when I look at this incredible and phenomenal treasure of enchanting melodies – this world of songs, here, with us.

A grand celebration for this inception day milestone.

A wonderful musical greetings to all readers and all members of the musical bandwagon.

And a bagful of wishes and blessings, that this tree may only proliferate further, day by passing day.

And that this journey may never cease.

तमन्ना है ये साथ चलते रहें हम ना बीते कभी ये सफर. . .

Song – Geeton Ka Sansaar Yahaan Par  (Nai Reet) (1948) Singer – Meena Kapoor, Lyrics – Kumar-Gupta, MD – SK Pal

Lyrics

kya chhodoon kya chun loon is mein
kya chhodoon kya chun loon is mein
lagta bada jhamela hai
muskaanon ka mela hai

geeton ka sansaar yahaan par
muskaanon ka mela hai

ek anokha baag hai duniya
ek anokha baag hai duniya
sundar sundar pyaara pyaara
maano meetha raag hai duniya
maano meetha raag hai duniya
paagal mann mera masti mein
paagal mann mera masti mein
kali sa khil khil khela hai
muskaanon ka mela hai

4701 Post No. : 16402

Remembering Nargis today on the 91st anniversary of her birth.

Born in the year 1929, she made her debut in films as a child artist as early as 1935. And then starting with 1942, she moved on from child roles to adult roles. As I was searching for a song from her early years in films, I chanced to see this song, which is really very playful and chirpy. And listening to the song made me wonder why has this song so far been away from this blog.

Nargis is all of 21 years of age, as she is singing and trying to hold back Karan Dewan (her husband in the film) from going to office. The words of the song are simple and endearing and the whole ambiance of the scene is very charming. There is a childlike entreaty in the pleadings of the newlywed, as she recounts her hours of boredom when the husband is sway to office. And the husband too is in part a willing accomplice, only that near the end of the song, his elder brother (role played by Shyam Chadha) calls him to leave for office, and he has to perforce make a quick departure from the song and the beseeching wife.

The film is ‘Chhoti Bhabhi’ from 1950. It is produced under the banner of Filmkar Limited, Bombay and is directed by Shanti Kumar. The cast of actors in the film is listed as Nargis, Karan Diwan, Shyam, Kuldip Kaur, Gulab, Shyama, Suraiya Chaudhary, Yakub, Johar, Baby Tabassum, Gyani Jugnu, G Sarang, and Khushdil. Yes, the Johar we see in this list is IS Johar, doing a small role here.

The film has nine songs, all of them are from the pen of Qamar Jalaalabaadi. The music is from the duo of Husnlal Bhagatram. It is 1950 – and the voice of an equally young singer, Lata Mangeshkar, sounds so wonderful. The rendition by the singer and the performance on the screen, both are really superb. The outcome is a naughty playful song that is really endearing.

The film has a total of nine songs, of which seven songs are already showcased here. This is the eighth song to find its place on our blog today. With one more to go, this film is ready for the Yippeee category.

4700 Post No. : 16400

This article is the 16400th post in the blog.

This Week, That Year – 7
———————————–
30May – 05Jun, 2011

Celebrations today – the first item of order. Yes, the two numbers above are telling a telling tale (pardon the pun please). I have been on board now, well, it seems all my life now. Yes, so many years ago. And as we continue this relentless beat forward, I continue to keep marveling – at the fact that the blog seems to have gotten a life of its own and the bandwagon continues to chug along merrily.

It is stated often – the destination is not of any import. It is the journey that has to be enjoyed. And as this blog keeps growing from height to height and going from strength to strength, these minor milestones and even the major milestones have really become a matter of routine. Ok yes – another century, well, this number of days, well, this average of songs per day, well. . .  As I said, just a matter of routine that these stations come and go past quickly.

Ah but the journey – that is where the real joy is emerging. Yes, we had those days when 5,000th and 10,000th songs were such a big deal and Atulites of all shades were pinned to the emails and whatsapp chats as if the World Cup finals were on and both Gavaskar and Tendulkar were on crease, going full blast. I am sure the regulars have those days cemented into memory. The heady heights that we used to cheer and celebrate about.

I do not mean to say that we do not or will not continue to celebrate the milestones. But the drummer’s beat has changed somewhat. The magic of the daily routine is just unbelievable. There is such a serene comfort in the incessant regularity. A trust, a confidence, just like the Sun rising every day (well, some rare days may have clouds also). But then the Sun is there, and will appear in all its glory tomorrow morning again.

I know that most bandwagoneers will agree with me – the blog has become a foundational regularity in life, and whether or not I will open the browser early morning, I know that a new post will be there.

A new post, a new song – another gem to ruminate on today, from the ocean that is the Hindi film song. With the incessant dipping into this ocean every day, and the incessant pulling up of pearls and gems of the first water – one starts to believe. Starts to believe that there is a blessing that has descended on this concept, and the upon the fortunate ones who are connected with it, making our own, and many other lives meaningful.

The heart brims over, the mind stalls, the words slow down – enough been said, and yet, more than that enough still remains to be said. I had come across a quote from Rumi couple of days back – “The closer I get, the more I see how far I am”.

And the bandwagon chugs along. . .

4,700 days, 16,400 posts. And you must consider, the number of songs contained therein are much more – on account of multi part and multi version songs. By my tally of data that we are maintaining, the song count stands today, with this post – 17,010.

And there is still an ocean awaiting us. . .

Ok so, the week that was 30th May to 5th June in 2011 – the summer of 2011. Goodness, one of the slowest weeks I have written about in this series so far. Three dot days, four active days, and a total of 13 posts published. Atul ji, where were you located in the summer of 2011?

Let’s do the numbers first. A total of 13 posts and 12 films are showcased. One film ‘Mirza Ghalib’ (1954) comes in with two posts.

We had 4 debut films this week. No films got yippeee’d during the week. Of the 12 films that got featured, 7 films have since been yippeee’d. If we factor in the possibly untraceable songs, then we have two more films being Yippeee’d conditionally. Hmm, that is a very good %. Only three films out of the 12 posted, are still showing the pending status.

Looking at the distribution by decades, we have the following data,

1930s   1
1940s   5
1950s   6
1970s   1

Majority focus is on the Godlen Era.

No milestones got breached this week.

Here is the week’s data in table form.

After a no show on 30th May, the next day (31st May) has three films that featured on the blog – ‘Tansen’ (1943), ‘Meena Bazaar’ (1950) and ‘Do Phool’ of 1958. All three films have been Yippeee’d. And that actually posed a problem for me.

On 1st June, again three posts and three films – ‘Bhakt Soordas’ (1942), ‘Bholi’ (1949) and ‘Hyderabad Ki Naazneen’ (1952). ‘Bhakt Soordas’ is now already at the conditional Yippeee status. One song of this film, “Manuva Krishan Naam Rate Jaa.” is not traceable. No record was cut, and since the film is not available as yet, no way to say whether and how this song was presented in the film.

‘Hyderabad Ki Naazneen’ is Yippeee’d. And then ‘Bholi’ from 1949 still has many songs to go.

The problem that I mentioned in the 2nd previous paragraph, is that I do not have an available film from 31st May, to select a song for the post. And so I had to resort to pick a song from 1st June, and that to from, film ‘Bholi’, the only film from that date still having pending status.

On 2nd June, four films were added. ‘Mirza Ghalib’ (1954), ‘Chor Bazaar’ (1954) and ‘Aakhiri Sajda’ from 1977 have already been Yippeee’d.  The film ‘Zameen Ke Taare’ still remains pending.

‘Mirza Ghalib’ also featued in the post list on 3rd June. Two more films came up that day – ‘Pooran Bhagat’ (1933) and ‘Bhanwra'(1944). ‘Mirza Ghalib’ being Yippeee’d already, ‘Bhanwara’ entered the conditional Yippeee status, since all songs of this film are posted, except for one, the song being ” Yeh Dua Maango Haseenon Aashikon Ka Dum Rahe” is still to be traced. That leaves behind ‘Pooran Bhagat’ from 1933 which still has a lot of songs still awaiting to be posted.

The song that I have selected from ‘Bholi’ for this post here today, is a gem of a rendition by Shamshad Begum. This song is vintage Shamshad. One can clearly hear the ‘khanak’ in the voice, as she goes on to present a song of first realization of love. The words are very craftily woven by Ishwar Chandra Kapoor and the music is by Pt. Gobind Ram. A beautiful creation by any standards.

‘Bholi’ is produced under the banner of Murli Movietone, Bombay, and is directed by Ram Daryani. The star cast is listed as Geeta Bali, Prem Adeeb, Shashikala, Jeevan, Gulab, Khatoon, Nazeera, Sheila, Ishu, Gope, and Nawab. There are 10 songs listed, all from the pen of Ishwar Chandra Kapoor with music by Pt Gobind Ram.

Ok so, I have not used this word so far in the article.

But yes, Congratulations – very much in order.

Congratulations to us all.

Song – Piya Piya Tu Bol Papiha, Din Phaagun Ke Aaye  (Bholi) (1949) Singer – Shamshad Begum, Lyrics – Ishwar Chandra Kapoor, MD – Gobind Ram

Lyrics (Provided by Prakash ji)

piya piya tu bol papiha
din phagun ke aaye
jiya mera dola jaaye

piya piya tu bol papiha
din phagun ke aaye
jiya mera dola jaaye

ek daal pe khila hai genda
dooje daal chameli
koyal ban kar baag mein aayi
dulhan nai naveli
ek daal pe khila hai genda
dooje daal chameli
koyal ban kar baag mein aayi
dulhan nai naveli
phoolon ke kaanon mein apne dil ki baat sunaaye
jiya mera dola jaaye
phoolon ke kaanon mein apne dil ki baat sunaaye
jiya mera dola jaaye

piya piya tu bol papiha
din phagun ke aaye
jiya mera dola jaaye

aaj kisi ne chhed diye hain
man veena ke taar
aaj kisi ne chhed diye hain
man veena ke taar
do matwaare nainanwa mein
naach raha hai pyaar
haan haan
naach raha hai pyaar
aankhen dil se ye kehti hain
hans hans kar lut jaaye
aankhen dil se ye kehti hain
hans hans kar lut jaaye

piya piya tu bol papiha
din phagun ke aaye
jiya mera dola jaaye

piya piya tu bol papiha
din phagun ke aaye
jiya mera dola jaaye

#The Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
———————————————————–———-
# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 141 # Preet Ki Dori-1971 #

————————————————————

‘Preet Ki Dori’ is  one of the lesser known films of 1971. It probably did not do well at the box office, maybe that is why the film and its music is not remembered. However it does have some very good songs.

The film was produced by Suraj Prakash Seth under the banner of KS Pictures, Bombay and presented by Krishna Kumari. It was directed by Satish Kumar. Story, dialogues and screenplay of this movie was written by R Priyadarshi. The film was edited by Kamlakar. This movie was passed by the Censor Board on 25.09.1971.

The star cast for the film includs Tanuja, Ajay Sahni (Parikshit Sahni), Bindu, Nazeer Hussain, Jeevan, Lalita Pawar, Asit Sen, Roopesh Kumar, Mohan Choti, Tuntun, Kumud, Mishrilal, Nikita, Maruti, Randhir, Santosh Kumar, Pal Sharma, Rajnath, Radheyshyam, Soni, Nazeer Kashmiri, Maqbool, Abu Bakar, Dalpat Kaka, Ajeet, N Reddi, Paul Sharma and a parrot ‘Mitthoo’.

This movie has five songs, all written by Indeewar. Music for this movie is composed by Kalyanji-Anandji. Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar, and Lata Mangeshkar have given their voices to the songs in this movie. (all songs are solo songs where Asha Bhonsle and Lata Mangeshkar have two solos each and one solo song was by Kishore Kumar).

Following is the list of songs of this movie as mentioned in HFGK Vol-V (1971-1980).

05

Milaa jo pyaar to ham pyaar ke qaabil na rahe (Posted 01.07.2009) Kishore Kumar

With this Lata song posted, all Lata Mangeshkar songs from this movie will be covered. The song is lip synced by Tanuja on screen. Parikshit Sahni is also seen in the picturization of this lovely song.

This song appears to be complementary to another song in the film. The song “Milaa Jo Pyaar To Hum Pyaar Ke Qaabil Na Rahe“, is a sad song that is sung by Kishore Kumar and is picturized on Ajay Sahni. Although I have not seen the film, it appears that the song being posted today, is from the happier times between Tanuja and Ajay Sahni (in terms of the characters they play in the film). Then maybe things do not go well, and we see Ajay Sahni in a wheelchair, lip syncing the sad song sung by KK. The words in the mukhda in both these songs are similar in part, Just a thought. I would request other readers who may have seen this film to please comment on this.

Whatever songs of this movie I have listened and watched are some nice songs however none of the songs of this movie became popular. Atul ji has also mentioned it in the first song post of this movie, that maybe because the movie flopped at the box office, so its songs had also not done well.

Let us now enjoy today’s song …

Song – Mila Jo Hamen Tera Pyaar (Preet Ki Dori) (1971) Singer – Lata Mangeshkar, Lyrics – Indeewar, MD – Kalyanji Anandji

Lyrics

milaa jo hamen tera pyaar
milaa jo hamen tera pyaar
ham pyaar ke kaabil ho gaye

milaa jo hamen tera pyaar
milaa jo hamen tera pyaar
ham pyaar ke kaabil ho gaye

jhankaar ke kaabil ho gaye

khazaane miley ae ae ae
tu milaa to hame

khazaane miley ae ae ae
tu milaa to hame jeene ke
bahaane miley ae ae ae
dil badhaaya tune baar baar
sansaar ke kaabil ho gaye

kinaara lagey ae ae ae
teri baahon ki hai patwaar
manjhdhaar ke kaabil ho gaye

milaa jo hamen tera pyaar
ham pyaar ke kaabil ho gaye

milaa jo hamen tera pyaar

jise paane ko tarsaa hai jeewan
wahi mil gaya aa aa aa
jise paane ko tarsaa hai jeewan
wahi mil gaya aa aa aa
tere kirnon se nainon ne chooma
man kamal khil gayaa aa aa aa
tune daaman mein bhar di bahaar
tere dwaar ke kaabil ho gaye

milaa jo hamen tera pyaar
ham pyaar ke kaabil ho gaye
ho gaye
chhooye jo tune dil ke taar
jhankar ke kaabil ho gaye
ho gaye
milaa jo hamen tera pyaar

‘PANCHAM-RAFI’ Jodi’s Variety Songs – 5
———————————————————

Welcome all to today’s post which is coming after a long gap of more than two years. In this series we discussed song by ‘Pancham-Rafi’ jodi. This series was basically inspired by an article on the blog ‘Pancham and Only Pancham’ – and the title of the article is ‘Tribute to Rafi Sahab on 28th Death Anniversary‘, published on Rafi Sb’s twenty-eighth ‘Remembrance Anniversary’ on 31.07.2008. This article lists out the ‘variety of songs by the genius -Pancham-Rafi’ jodi based on different ‘genres’ of music.

When I came across the above article I thought to share this list with readers on our blog too. So, when I started this series in ‘2015’ with this song – “Jaag Devta Naag Devta – nine out of the twenty songs listed in the article were already posted on the blog. After that, I shared three more songs viz. – “Raqqaasa Mera Naam, Ae Sahib Sabko Salaam“, “Maine Kab Chaaha Ke Dulha Banoonga” and “Maakhan Chor Nandkishore Manmohan Ghanshyam Re“. The remaining songs were shared by our team members from time to time, and all these twenty songs are on the blog now.

Readers can go through the list in the article mentioned above. As the songs in this list were already getting posted on the blog, I had in the post for the song “Maine Kab Chaaha Ke Dulha Banoonga” mentioned that I will include some more songs in this series, not on the basis of music-genres, but these ‘special songs’ are from the category of being ‘the only Rafi song in a movie where music was composed by RD Burman.

Today’s song is one such song and it is from the movie ‘Phir Wohi Raat’ (1980).

This film was directed by Danny Dengzongpa for Prithvi Pictures, Bombay. The star cast includes Rajesh Khanna, Kim (new discovery), Shashikala, AK Hangal, Suresh Oberoi, Lalita Pawar, Tamanna, Aruna Irani, Danny Dengzongpa, Om Shivpuri, Shobha Khote, Jagdeep, Mukri, Bhagwan, Mohan Choti, Birbal, Madhu Malhotra, Shashi Kiran, Manmauji, Prakash, Lalita Kumari, Brahm Bharadwaj, Ranjeet Sood, Jugnu, Chand Usmani, Moolchand, Gopal Saigal, Master Chirag and others.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 06.08.1980 with restricted viewing (Adults Only) certificate.

This movie had six songs, all written by Majrooh Sultanpuri and composed to music by RD Burman. Here is the list of the songs of this movie,

Today’s song, the only Rafi song, in this movie is lip-synced on screen by actor Jagdeep.

Today 29th March 2021 is eighty-second birth anniversary (born on 29.03.1939) of actor Jagdeep. He passed away last year on 08th July 2020. As a tribute to him we will listen and enjoy this entertaining song from this movie. The song is ‘joie-de-vivre’ where other than Jagdeep we can see Mohan Choti, Bhagwan, Mukri, Birbal, Gopal Saigal and others also performing with him.

Also wishing herewith is ‘Happy Holi’ to all. Though the song is not a ‘holi’ song but ‘holi’ celebrations can be enjoyed this year ‘in house’ only – with playing this song and ‘taking a jig’ on this vibrant Pancham composition.

‘Baabu Ji’ (1950) was directed by Bhagwan for Uday Productions, Bombay.  It had Bhagwan, Leela Gupte, Baburao, Usha Shukla, Vasant Rao, Azeem, Jani, Mirajkar, Zafar, Vitthalrao, Dhondu, Anmanta, Swami and others.

This movie has nine songs, all written by Ehsaan Rizvi and composed by music director P Ramakant. Going by the style of composition, it has been commented that the music is composed by C Ramchandra himself, under the name of P Ramakant. I request our more knowledgeable readers to be please comment on this observation.

HFGK Vol-II (1941-1950) lists the songs of this movie as given below; (in order of their appearing on this movie (Babooji-1950) page in HFGK)

Gorey gorey mukh se jo ghoonghat hataawjo Anna Saheb

As we can see above this movie had made its debut on the blog in 2013 and since then only three songs from the movie have been posted so far. As I was noting the song-list I realized that the voice of Sulochana Kadam is appearing in all songs of this movie, but it is not the case as the last song is a solo in the voice of Anna Saheb. And this is the only male solo in this movie.

Today 13th March 2021 is the eighty-eighth birth anniversary of Sulochana Kadam (born 1933) who later became Sulochana Chavan.  Her singing of many famous and popular ‘lavanis’ in Marathi brought her the honour as ‘Laavni-samradhni’ in Marathi music.

On this occasion here is the song from ‘Baabu Ji’ which is lying with us since August’2013.

Actually, during 2013 – 2015 when I was staying in Kachchh, I had shared some of her songs on the blog. And I had enjoyed listening many of her songs from Hindi movies of that era. The today’s song is also a song which I like very much. One other song “Kyun Preshaan Huye” from this movie is also pending with the editors since then. Let us see when it appears 😊 on the blog.

Let us now listen to the today’s song and wish ‘a very happy birthday’ to Sulochana ji on her birth anniversary today and also wishing her a healthy and peaceful life ahead. . .

Saawanwa Umdaa Aaye Ho

Song – Saawanva Umda Aaye Ho (Baabu Ji) (1950) Singer – Sulochana Kadam, Lyrics – Ehsaan Rizvi, MD – P Ramakant

Lyrics

saawanwa umda aaye ho
saawanwa umda aaye
barkhaa rim jhim jal barsaaye
mann mein aag lagaaye ho
saawanwa umda aaye
saawanwa umdaa aaye ho
saawanwa umdaa aaye

geet ke ras mein mann dooba hai
pyaar ke ras mein naina aa
yaad ke ras mein din dooba hai
birha ke ras mein rainaa
dhyan tera aa jaaye jo
bijli ye jo lehraaye
saawanwa umda aaye
saawanwa umda aaye ho
saawanwa umda aaye

tere sundar roop se akhiyaan
hate nahin hataaye
tujhko sabse nazar bachakar
koi dekhe jaaye
chupke chupke mann veena bhi
pyaar ke geet sunaaye ho
saawanwa umda aaye
saawanwa umda aaye ho
saawanwa umda aaye

kali kali par bhanwaraa doley ae ae ae
koyal shor mahcaaye
pihu pihu kare papiha aa aa
piya ki yaad dilaaye
sab ke mann se taan nikalti
mere mann se haaye
saawanwa umda aaye

saawanwa umda aaye ho
saawanwa umda aaye
barkhaa rim jhim jal barsaaye
mann mein aag lagaaye ho

This Week, That Year – 1
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
16Aug – 22Aug, 2010
————————————————-
Blog ten year challenge (2010-2020)- Song Number 56
————————————————–
Reviewing the week of Aug16 – Aug22, I just thought of doing the analysis in one more way – to just see where all we had been and what all were we listening to during the time from the start of the blog on 19Jul2008 to 22Aug2010. Interesting things appeared.

It all started with thought – what is the distribution of songs across the decades in the week under review. I did a quick sort check and came up with the following data. This week we had seen 31 songs posted in all. And these 31 songs were distributed according to decade as follows,

1930s

1

1940s

4

1950s

16

1960s

9

1970s

1

The distribution is quite as expected – of the 31 songs, 25 songs (80%) are from the decades of 50s and 60s. Goodness, aren’t these the most favorite years of practically all listeners of Hindi film music.

The thought then prompted me to take a view of the total songs posted thus far, i.e. till 22Aug of 2010. By the end of that week, the total number of posts was 2827, and the total number of songs posted was 2928. The 100 odd more songs are due to multiple songs being included in a single post – multipart and multi version songs.

And the results are pretty much along the same lines, as expected. The overall distribution for all songs till 22Aug2010 stands as follows,

1930s 26
1940s 228
1950s 972
1960s 1069
1970s 511
1980s 89
1990s 30
2000s 5

The overall % of the songs from 50s and 60s dips a little – down to 71%, but still, overwhelmingly most songs are still coming from that era. There is a sizeable interest in the 1970s – 17%. I am sure that is due to the fact that we are still listening to our favorite artists from the Golden Era. To approximately round off, the 30s-40s component is 8% and for 80s and beyond the allocation is 4%. In tabular form, as follows

30s-40s 8%
50s-60s 71%
70s 17%
80s+ 4%

Well, much as expected – the distribution of the listening and selection preferences of this group. Well, not maybe every week, but I will try to revisit this analysis after 2/3 months, and see the evolution of our selection preferences with time.

Let’s do the numbers for that week. Total posts that came on board that week is 31. Number of films represented is 27, with four films making a double appearance. Four films had made their debut that week, and no films were yippeee’d. However, since that week over the past 10 years, 24 of these films have been yippeee’d and seven remain pending. Also, that week we had one dot day.

The special event recorded for that week was a blog century. I have now inserted another column in the chart to track the appearance of century milestones. On 16 Aug 2010, the song “Jaan Pehchaan Ho” from the 1966 film ‘Gumnaam’ clocked in on the 28th century milestone for the blog. It was the 2800th post to come on board. Going back to revisit some of these posts, it is very enlightening. It is a delight to recall and refresh the large amount of trivia that is now silently sitting in the electrons on this blog’s storage. About this post – this was a special request post that Greta Memsaab had written for the blog. At 2800 posts, this was only the 12th guest post till then, and the second on by Memsaab. Poring through the article and the comments, one learns and re-learns so much more about these songs – names of the guitarists, name of the dancers, the fleeting appearance by Helen, the fact that the lead in dance music is lifted from the song “Teen Kanastar Peet Peet Kar” (‘Love Marriage’, 1957), and that an ad by Heinken has used this song – the entire lead in music and the mukhda of the song, in the voice of Rafi Sb. It is a revival experience par excellence.

And so, getting into this week. Seven films, and eight challenge opportunities for the team members. I must acknowledge that members are sending in challenge contributions – lyrics and sometimes articles too. And we need more of that. Gear up, and happy posting.

‘Raagini’ of 1958 is one of the two films pending for today’s date. The song being presented is a stage dance song, and as the performance rolls to the end, one finds that it is actually dream sequence song. It is being played out in a dream being experienced by Padmini, as she visualizes herself to be Anaarkali, dancing in the court of Prince Saleem, that is Kishore Kumar, the person she is love with.

The lyrics of this song are penned by Qamar Jalaalabaadi, the music is composed by OP Nayar and the singing voice is that of Asha Bhosle.

Lyrics for this song have been sent in by Prakash ji.

With this post, the film ‘Raagini’ moves closer to gaining yippeee status, with just one more song pending.

[Author’s Note: This post is the beginning of a weekly series that is about the story of this blog. This story has already been appearing as the weekly challenge information being shared on Whatsapp group. In discussion with Atul ji, we agreed that the weekly presentation of this evolving story has become as good as a post by itself. And so we decided that the weekly information post on Whatsapp will also be duplicated as a post on the blog itself, making a more firm documentation of this story. Hence, this series.]

Remembering Kishore Kumar on his 91st Birth Anniversary :

teri gali main aata sanam
naghma wafa ka gaata sanam
tujhse suna na jaata sanam
phir aa jidhar aaya hoon magar
ye kehne main deewaana
khatm bas aaj ye wehshat hogi
aaj rusva teri galiyon mein muhabbat hogi
mere mehboob

Abhas Kumar Ganguly (born 4 August 1929 – 13 October 1987), became the famed Kishore Kumar of Hindi film world. Being a Bengali but born and brought up in hindi heartland and settling down to work in Bombay film industry to follow the footsteps of big brother, must have helped form a cosmopolitan outlook in his attitudes. I have just read the Wikipedia page on Kishore Kumar and found it enlightening in many ways. Some of the eccentric behavior described in the page, are funny and not so funny at the same time.

Reading the detailed page has confirmed many of my conceptions about Kishore Kumar. Chief among them being the fact that S. D. Burman, had a great role to play in shaping him as a super playback singer. For a long time through 50’s and 60’s it is apparent that he only ever gave playback for Dev Anand. He was making films, acting as hero and character roles, singing for himself, composing songs for his own films etc. etc. 50’s and 60’s were the most productive decades for Dev Anand, but he was singing songs on screen with the total range of singers, Rafi, Kishore, Hemant Kumar, Talat Mehmood and even Mukesh. If Manna De also sang for Dev Anand during this time, I don’t know off hand. Even in Navketan films, the songs were divided among Rafi and Kishore, a few were by Hemant Kumar too early on. So it is understandable that 70’s and early 80’s is Kishore Kumar’s most productive period, after he was convinced by RDB to seriously concentrate on playback singing. Even than he was reportedly choosy about the actors for whom he sang.

Kishore Kumar also has a distinction of being the singing star and having enjoyed playback by Rafi Sahab. Only other singer to have this distinction is G. M. Durrani.

Some of the sad melancholy songs of Kishore Kumar are my favourite sad songs which I have listed in another post. The above quoted song “mere Mehboobqayamathogi” is one such song, the lyrics of which were written in a book of songs I used to keep in my childhood.

I had short listed the solo from “Sanam Teri Qasam” – Sheeshe ke gharon mein dekho to patthar dil wale baste hain”, but I found that song a bit depressing. So I shifted to another happy sounding song.

I am presenting this peppy, feel good song from the film “Bezubaan”(1982). It’s a party song, where Shashi Kapoor is singing in praise of his wife Reena Roy and counting his blessings. It is a solo song by Kishore Kumar, witten by Ravindra Rawal and composers are Raam-Laxman. The entire cast of the film is present in this gathering. The party is moving from indoors to outdoors and indoors again while Shashi Kapoor is so shaky and imbalanced with happiness keeps falling down and dropping things 🙂 🙂 . The details of the film are available on imdb site. The songs were quite good in this film especially the song “harek jeewan hai ek kahaani par ye sachchayi sab ne na jaani”, story- telling solo by Lata Mangeshkar.

Song-Tere jaisa koi khoobsoorat nahin (Bezubaan)(1982) Singer-Kishore Kumar, Lyrics-Ravindra Rawal, MD-Raam-Laxman

Part I (Happy version)

Tere jaisa koyi khoobsoorat nahin
Tere jaisa koyi khoobsoorat nahin
Mere jaisa koyi khushqismat nahin
Ye mera chhota sa jahaan
Aisa swarg hai kahaan
mera chhota sa jahaan
Aisa swarg hai kahaan
Tere jaisa koyi khoobsoorat nahin
Mere jaisa koyi khushqismat nahin

Sooraj chaand taare gagan ke
Jaise raushni dene chamke
Yoon hi teri bindiya ke dam se
Meri duniya din raat damke
Sooraj chaand taare gagan ke
Jaise roshni dene chamke
Yunhi teri bindiya ke dam se
Meri duniya din raat damke
Tere hansne se achcha mahurat nahin
Tere jaisa koyi khoobsoorat nahin
Mere jaisa koyi khushqismat nahin

Main bhi aaj yeh maanta hoon
Kal tak jo yeh duniyaa thhi kehti
Jag mein har safal aadmi ke
Peechhe ek aurat hai rehti
Main bhi aaj yeh maanta hoon
Kal tak jo yeh duniyaa thhi kehti
Jag mein har safal aadmi ke
Peechhe ek aurat hai rehti
Munh chhupaane ki koyi zaroorat nahin
Tere jaisa koyi khoobsoorat nahin
Mere jaisa koyi khushqismat nahin

Kitna mujhe tujhpe yaqeen hai
Hamdam tujhe kehna hai mushkil
Itna tujhe kehta hoon bas main
Tujh bin zinda rehna hai mushkil
Kitna mujhe tujh pe yaqeen hai
Hamdam tujhe kehna hai mushkil
Itna tujhe kehta hoon bas main
Tujh bin zinda rehna hai mushkil
Nainon mein bin tere koyi moorat nahin
Tere jaisa koyi khoobsoorat nahin
Mere jaisa koyi khushqismat nahin
Ye mera chhota sa jahaan
Aisa swarg hai kahaan
mera chhota sa jahaan
Aisa swarg hai kahaan
Tere jaisa koyi khoobsoorat nahin
Mere jaisa koyi khushqismat nahin

Part II (Sad version)

Itna mujhe tujh pe yaqeen hai
Hamdam tujhe kehna hai mushkil
Itna tujhe kahta hoon bas main

Mere jaisa koyi khushqismat nahin

“I worshipped Bimal Roy. For me, his worth as a man was more than his films… It is impossible for me to describe what a man he was.”

The above quote was by Ritwik Ghatak, one of Bimal Roy’s desciples who later became an internationally known director of parallel cinema in Bangla films.

In Hindi film industry, there are many film artists, directors and those connected with the film music who are admired for their excellent professional performances. But there would be very few among them who would also be admired as the good human beings. Among few such personalities, the name of Bimal Roy comes to my mind because for the last few months, I have extensively read on the life and works of Bimal Roy. I have found that those who have closely worked with him like Dilip Kumar, Balraj Sahani, Vyjaynatimala, Kamini Kaushal, Nutan, Dharmendra, Shashi Kapoor, Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Gulzar and many more have highly talked about Bimal Roy as a fine human being besides an being an outstanding director. What touched me most about Bimal Roy was what Manobina Roy, his wife had said in an interview. Just a few minutes before his death on January 8, 1966, Bimal Roy had called her and said that he was deeply worried about his workers in Mohan Studio as to what will happen to them after his death. Only when she assured him and repeated her assurance that she would take care of them, Bimal Roy closed his eyes never to open them again.

Today, July 12th 2020 is 111th birth anniversary of Bimal Roy (12/07/1909 – 08/01/1966), one of the greatest Hindi film directors who rose from a still photographer to a cinematographer and then as a producer-director of some of the classic and socially relevant films. Although, there were many film directors from Bengal – especially in the Bombay Talkies who had directed Hindi films in Mumbai in the 1940s, it is said that it was Bimal Roy who brought ‘Bengaliness’ in his Hindi films in Mumbai. He was a trend setter in introducing the ‘middle of the road’ films.

Arunkumar Deshmukh ji has already discussed Bimal Roy’s biographical and celluloid journey in his article covering the song, chale re chale raam vanwaas. I would, therefore, skip his profile and his sequential journey in the film industry. I propose to concentrate mainly on three important phases in his filmy career which led to his meteoric rise in the film industry – as a Cinematographer, as a Director for films produced by New Theatres and as a Producer-director of Hindi films in Mumbai. In my view, the three phases were also the important turning points in the career of Bimal Roy.

Bimal Roy joined New Theatres (NT) as an Assistant Cameraman to Nitin Bose in 1932 during which he assisted him for ‘Chandidas’ (1932, Bangla version and also Hindi version in 1934), ‘Meerabai’ (1933) etc. He was promoted as a cinematographer in NT and shot films like ‘Devdas’ (1935), ‘Manzil’ (1936), ‘Mukti’ (1937), ‘Abhagin’ (1938), ‘Abhinetri’ (1940) ‘Meenakshi’ (1942) etc.

The high point in his career as a cinematographer was ‘Mukti’ (1937) – the first film from NT which was extensively shot outdoors, mostly in the forest of Gauripur (Assam). It was a challenge for Bimal Roy as a Cinematographer to shoot outdoors, the scenes with proper lightings. Even his indoor shots were exceptional. His camera works in the opening scene of the film itself is marvelous. The camera focuses on P C Barua who walks through three rooms, one after another before knocking the door of the fourth room. Here, only the camera ‘speaks’ in the scene in complete silence without any background music to create suspense as to what is going to happen next. The light and shadow effects have been effectively used to convey the mood of the situations in the film.

Kanan Devi, in one of her interviews had said that in ‘Mukti’ (1937), Bimalda through his camera work, made her more beautiful than what she looked in reality. P C Barua, the director, was so happy with his camera work in the film that in the publicity poster of ‘Mukti’ (1937), he made the name of Bimal Roy to appear next to his name with names of the actors appearing in the side. Probably, this may be the first occasion in NT that the publicity poster had prominently carried the name of the cinematographer.

Bimal Roy entered his second phase of his career when he turned as a director for the first time for the Bangla film ‘Udayer Pathe’ [(1944), ‘Towards the Twilight’]. A year later, a Hindi version of the film was made as ‘Hamraahi’ (1945), also directed by Bimal Roy. Manobina Roy, the wife of Bimal Roy was surprised as to why he chose the subject of exploitation by upper class of the lower strata of the society when he himself had the background of a landlord’s son. Probably, he may have seen such scenarios in his teenage days in his family and he wished to bring them to the notice of masses.

The challenge for Bimal Roy in this fiim was that NT boss, B N Sarkar has personally told to direct the film with the left-over cut pieces of the raw stock of negative film as those days, raw stock of films was rationed. There was no scope for wastage of the raw stock of films by way of reshoots. On the top of it, he had taken newcomers, Binita Bose (Roy) and Radhamohan Bhattacharya as the lead actors. With these backgrounds, it was imperative that he should also take the responsibility as a cinematographer. When the shooting of the film was completed, B N Sarkar was surprised that the film was completed by Bimal Roy without taking any extra stock of raw films.

The film though made with a small budget was one of the top box office grossers for NT. The film ran for more than one year in Kolkata’s Chitra theatre. With its Hindi version of the film, the name of Bimal Roy became well-known all-over India. In the Bengali speaking regions, ‘Udayer Pathe’ (1944) became one of the highly discussed films. The film became a trend setter for some subsequent Hindi films having ‘rich girl poor boy’ love story with the background of a class conflict. Chetan Anand’s ‘Neecha Nagar’ (1946) followed, more or less, the similar pattern in the story.

The extra-ordinary success of ‘Udayer Pathe’ (1944) did not help much in Bimal Roy’s career as a director as fortune of NT had taken a down turn due to the adverse impact on the film industry of the World War II and thereafter partition of Bengal by creating the then East Pakistan. Bimal Roy did direct two films for NT – ‘Anjangarh’ (1948) and ‘Pehla Aadmi’ (1950). The highlight of ‘Pehla Aadmi’ (1950) was that it was made on Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. It was a challenge for Bimal Roy to shoot the battle scenes of the film in the studio itself which should look real in the film. I have watched the clip of the battle scene and it looks real. Though these two films were critically acclaimed, they did not fare well at the box office.

The downfall of NT in post-partition period and the emergence of Bombay (Mumbai) as the main film production centre prompted many artists and technicians in Kolkata to migrate to Mumbai. On the other hand, the Bombay Talkies was also going through the bad times. An opportunity came to Bimal Roy when he was invited by Ashok Kumar to direct ‘Maa’ (1952) for Bombay Talkies which he had to reluctantly accept due to the adverse conditions of the film industry in Kolkata. Bimal Roy came to Mumbai with his team consisting of Hrishikesh Mukherjee (Editor), Asit Sen (Assistant Director), Nabendu Ghosh (Dialogue writer) and Paul Mahendra (Hindi dialogue writer and actor). Later, some more artists and technicians from Kolkata like Kamal Bose (Cinematographer), Arvind Sen, Asit Sen, Debu Sen, Basu Bhattacharya and Salil Chaudhury joined Bimal Roy.

In terms of box office, ‘Maa’ (1952) did not add to the coffers of Bombay Talkies. Bimal Roy was all set to return to Kolkata along with his team when Ashok Kumar gave him another film, ‘Parineeta’ (1953) which was produced under the banner of Ashok Kumar Productions. Simultaneously, something was cooking within Bimal Roy’s team. Hrishikesh Mukherjee had revealed in an article that after watching an English film in Eros Theatre at Churchgate, Bimal Roy and his team were returning home on a BEST double decker bus and were discussing as to why they cannot make film like the one they watched. Bimal Roy asked as to who will write the story for the film to which everyone in his team offered to share the responsibilities. That was how Bimal Roy Productions was born on a double decker bus of BEST. And this was the third turning point in Bimal Roy’s career.

Bimal Roy embarked upon his maiden film ‘Do Bigha Zameen’ (1953) as a producer-director. Bimal Roy had read the story ‘Rickshwala’ written by Salil Chaudhury, based on the Rabindranath Tagore’s poem, ‘Doi Bigha Zomi’. This was perhaps the first film in Bollywood depicting what is called ‘neo-realism’, a term normally used for post-war effects on the poor class of the population who tended to migrate to urban area for sustenance. Many in his team had reservations about the selection of Balraj Sahani in the role of Shambhu, the farmer because of his urban look. But Bimal Roy struck to his choice. He had seen him acting live on the sets of ‘Dharti Ke Laal’ (1946) when he had visited Mumbai at the time of the release of his film ‘Hamraahi’ (1945) and thereafter in ‘Hum Log’ (1951).

‘Do Bigha Zameen’ (1953) put Bimal Roy on an international pedestal. The film won for him the Prix International Prize at 7th Cannes Film Festival (1954). The film also won him National Award for the Best Film and also the inaugural Filmfare Award, 1954 for the ‘Best Film’ and ‘The Best Director’. With the success of this film, the seeds of the ‘middle of the road’ cinema was sown in Bollywood.

One of Bimal Roy’s film which did not fit into his psyche of film making was ‘Madhumati’ (1958). The reincarnation story of the film was written by Ritwik Ghatak who was an assistant to Bimal Roy during his Kolkata days. He was without work in Kolkata and had come to Mumbai for work. Bimal Roy assigned him to write a story and screen play for his forthcoming film and also direct the film. This was how the film ‘Madhumati’ (1958) was born. But, at the last minute, he had to go back to Kolkata as he could arrange finance for his Bangla film, ‘Ajantrik’ (1958). ‘Madhumati’ (1958) was thought of mainly for the financial survival of Bimal Roy Productions. Hence, the commercial elements in the film was evident with Dilip Kumar and Vyjayantimala in lead roles, Pran as villain and Johny Walker as comedian and 11 songs. With Bimal Roy handling the direction, the mix of classic touch and commercial elements led the film to attain the status of the most commercially successful film for Bimal Roy Productions and the highest grosser among Hindi films released in 1958. The film won 9 Filmfare Awards.

Bimal Roy has shown through his films like ‘Udayer Pathe’ (1944), ‘Do Bigha Zameen’ (1953), ‘Sujata’ (1959) and ‘Bandini’ (1963) that the victims of oppressions have superior morality than the oppressors. Bimal Roy had not been known to have leanings towards any political ideology. It is, therefore, a surprise to observe that in most of his films, the exploitation of downtrodden by the superior class of the society is evident though he belonged to a wealthy family of the landlords in a village near Dhaka in East Bengal (now Bangla Desh). The reasons for his ‘dislike’ for landlords or upper class probably stem from having been a victim himself when after the death of his father in 1930, his family was denied share in the estate and was expelled. He along with his mother and brothers had migrated to Kolkata where they may have initially faced the same problem as Balraj Sahani in ‘Do Bigha Zameen’ when he migrated to Kolkata.

Rinki Roy Bhattacharya believes that some characters in his films may have been modelled on the traits of a few of his family members. For instances, the arrogant and authoritarian fathers in ‘Udayer Pathe’ (1944), ‘Parineeta’ (1953) and ‘Devdas’ (1955) may have been based on Bimal Roy’s authoritarian father. The character of a whip cracking school master in ‘Devdas’ may be a whip cracking Head Master of Bimal Roy’s school in Dhaka. Pran’s character in ‘Madhumati’ (1958) may have been inspired from his uncle Jogeshchandra Roy who loved wines, women and dances.

During his filmy career, Bimal Roy directed 15 Hindi films which included his classics and popular films like ‘Parineeta’ (1953), ‘Do Bigha Zameen’ (1953), ‘Biraj Bahu’ (1954), ‘Devdas’ (1955) ‘Madhumati’ (1958), ‘Yahudi’ (1958) ‘Sujata’ (1959), ‘Parakh’ (1960), ‘Prem Patra’ (1962) and ‘Bandini’ (1963) which was his last film as a director.

Bimal Roy also produced 7 Hindi films which he did not direct but gave the opportunity to direct most of them to his assistants. These films were ‘Amaanat’ (1955) directed by Aravind Sen, ‘Parivar’ (1956) and ‘Apraadhi Kaun’ (1957) both directed by Asit Sen (comedian), ‘Usne Kaha Thha’ (1960) directed by Moni Bhattacharya and ‘Kabuliwaala’ (1961) directed by Hemen Gupta who was unemployed at that time. ‘Benazir’ (1964) and ‘Do Dooni Chaar’ (1968) were directed by S Khalil and Debu Sen respectively due to Bimal Roy’s illness.

Those who had worked closely with Bimal Roy had said that he was a man of few words. It was very difficult to initiate a conversation with him. Dilip Kumar had said in an interview that he found the most peaceful atmosphere among the studios when he worked with Bimal Roy because no one was allowed to talk loudly. Nabendu Ghosh, his screen-play and dialogue writer, has said that Bimal Roy spoke little but smoked cigarettes a lot. Probably, his cigarette smoking may have resulted in lung cancer at a later stage which took his life on January 8, 1966.

At the time of his death, Bimal Roy had started work on ‘Do Dooni Chaar’ (1968) and ‘Sahaara’. While the first film was completed by one of his assistants, Debu Sen and got released in 1968, ‘Sahaara’ which was based on Bengali novel ‘Chaitali’ by Ashapoorna Devi got sheleved. In fact, Bimal Roy had done some shooting of the film with Dharmendra and Sharmila Tagore when he got ill on the set after which he never recovered. When Dharmendra became a top star from early 1970s, he convinced Bimal Roy’s wife, Manobina Roy to revive the film for which he arranged the finances and pursuaded Saira Bano to act in the film. Hrishikesh Mukherjee directed the film under its new title ‘Chaitali’ (1975).

One of Bimal Roy’s dream project which was very close to his heart was a bilingual film ‘Amrit Kumbh Ki Khoj Mein’ (Hindi and Bangla). He had started the work as early as 1960 when he had shot about one hour of footage of Ardha Kumbha Mela held at Allahabad in 1960. Gulzar was entrusted with writing the script for the film. It was his intention to complete the shooting of the film during the next Poorna Kumbh Mela. During the last stages of Bimal Roy’s illness when he was bed-ridden, Gulzar used to visit him every day and read out what he had written for the script of his favorite film. With the death of Bimal Roy, the film remained a dream. However, scenes shot for the film were converted into a 12 minutes of documentary film ‘Images of Kumbh Mela (1960) by his son, Joy Bimal Roy.

On the occasion of Bimal Roy’s 111th birth anniversary, I have selected a song, ‘main na boloon na boloon na boloongi’ from ‘Maa’ (1952), his first film in Mumbai as a director. The song is sung by Geeta Dutt which is picturised on Shyama. The song is written by Bharat Vyas which is set to music by S K Pal.

With this song, all the songs of ‘Maa’ (1952) have been covered in the Blog.

Lyrics

main na boloongi
o main na boloon na boloon na boloongi
aaj mere chhote se dil mein
chhupa hai kya raaz main na kholoongi
aaj main na boloon na boloongi aaj

kya raaz hai
hai to bataao

saawan ki ithlaate baadal se poochh lo ji
baadal se poochh lo
kajraare nainon ke kaajal se poochh lo ji
kaajal se poochh lo
bhole baalam
mohe laage sharam
haaye laage sharam
bhole baalam
mohe laage sharam
haaye laage sharam
ye bharam apne man ka na kholoongi
aaj main na boloongi
aaj main na boloon na boloongi aaj
main na boloongi
ho main na boloon na boloon na boloongi
aaj mere chhote se dil mein
chhupa hai kya raaz main na kholoongi
aaj main na boloon na boloongi aaj

achcha

o o o o o
suna maine jo
wo kaise sunaaun
wo baaten tumhe main kaise bataaun
kaho ji kaise bataaun
kuchh khud samjho
kuchh khud samjho
kuchh meri palkan se samajh lo ji
palkan se samajh lo
kuchh dil mein chhupi dil ki dhadkan se samajh lo ji
dhadkan se samajh lo
bhole baalam mohe laage sharam
haaye laage sharam
bhole baalam mohe laage sharam
haaye laage sharam
ye bharam apne man ka na kholoongi
aaj main na boloongi
aaj main na boloon na boloongi aaj

Blog Day:

4362 Post No. : 15688

I would prefer to stop counting the numbers, and rather go by the impressions in the memory. Well, it sounds so unbelievable that Nitin Mukesh turns 70 today. It seems like just a little while ago that we heard him sing for the first time in ‘Mera Naam Joker’ (1970). It was actually an unlisted song, in English. A song of good wishes and greetings – “Wish Me Luck”.

Then in 1981, when the song “Zindagi Ki Na Toote Ladi” from the film ‘Kranti’ was doing the rounds of popularity, my first impression on hearing this voice was – how come, was this song recorded earlier? The voice sounds so close to the voice of Mukesh, his father. Well yes, the voice is distinct, if one is listening carefully. But it also has an unmistakable shade of Mukesh’s voice.

Nitin Mukesh was born this day in 1950. Although he made his singing debut in 1970, his songs are few and far between in that first decade of his career. His more active years were the 1980s and 1990s. And even so, one cannot count his career as being prolific.

Today’s song is from the 1981 film ‘Nakhuda’. It was a big banner film of its time, produced by Yash Chopra for Yash Raj Films. The film is directed by Dilip Naik. The star cast for the film is Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Swaroop Sampat, Raj Kiran, Madan Puri, Javed Khan, Vikas Anand, Sudhir Dalvi, Bharat Kapoor, Madhu Malhothra, Mac Mohan, Yunus Parvez, Asha Sachdev, Jagdish Raj, Mahaan, Murlidhar, Bandini, Nandini, Umesh, Murari, Chand, Raj Verma, Chandu, Pardesi, Amarnath, Rajesh, and Rauf Khan.

The film has 6 songs. One song is a composition by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, and also sung by him. The remaining 5 songs are from the pen of Nida Fazli, and have been tuned to music by Khayyaam. One song of this film is already showcased on our blog. This is the second song of this film to make its appearance here today. Lyrics for this song have been sent in by our dear Avinash ji.

On screen, the song is picturized on Raj Kiran and Swaroop Sampat. As the words indicate, this is an ‘expectant parents’ song, with the characters expressing happiness and love for each other, with the knowledge that another member of the family is on way.

Wishing Nitin Mukesh, a very happy birthday, and also many many more years of good health and active singing. All the best wishes to him.

tumhaari baahon mein
chhup ke hum ne
tumhi ko tum se
chura liya hai
tumhaari baahon mein
chhup ke hamne
tumhi ko tum se
chura liya hai
churaane waale ke
haath hum ne
jo kho diya tha
wo pa liya hai
tumhaare honthon ki
khaamoshi mein
ye kya chhupa hai
ishaare jaisa
tumhaare honton ki
khaamoshi mein
ye kya chhupa hai
ishaare jaisa
haseen hai ye
hamaare jaisa
shareer hai ye
tumhaare jaisa

naye musaafir ke
kaun hain hum
naye musaafir ko
ye bata do
naye musaafir ke
kaun hain hum
naye musaafir ko
ye bata doi
woh tum se khud hi
karega baatein
kareeb aa ke
isey jaga do
tumhaari sharmilee
shokhiyon mein
ye kya chhupa hai
sharaare jaisa
tumhaari sharmilee
shokhiyon mein
ye kya chhupa hai
sharaare jaisa
haseen hai ye
hamaare jaisa
shareer hai ye
tumhaare jaisa

tumhaari palkon ki
chilmanon mein
ye kya chhupa
hai sitaare jaisa
tumhaare khwaabon ke
aayeene mein
ye kyaa chhupa hai
hamaare jaisa
jawaan hai ye
(hmmm…hmmmm)
hamaare jaisa
(hmmmmm)
haseen hai ye

tumhaare jaisa
