chupke se kho gaya. . .

Searching through his list of songs, I chanced upon this gem of a melodious creation – one of those ‘love at first hear’ type songs that I have really come across after so many days. It has been sitting in my collection forever, and I pulled it today, looking for an unheard or less heard song to include in this post. The composition is quite atypical with a different sound structure attempted. A beautiful melody that I am sure you will also fall in love with.

Remembering C Arjun today, on the anniversary of his passing away (30 April, 1992).

Preparation for this post started a couple of days ago. And in the interim, the industry and the lovers of Hindi films have been shaken by the news of two luminaries passing away yesterday and today. Yesterday morning we got the news about Irfan Khan, who lost his battle with cancer at Kokilaben Hospital in Mumbai. The emotions are still to settle, and the second shocking news came in today morning. Rishi Kapoor, the darling Chintu Baba of the 1970s and 80s, lost his battle with leukemia at another Mumbai hospital today. Irfan Khan, 53 – too yuong, too early. Rishi Kapoor, 67 – lively, and a lot of life still to go. But alas no, this is the ‘as much’ that was ordained.

As I check out the dates on C Arjun today, when he passed away, he was 59. Just about midway between Irfan and Rishi, in terms of years. The writ of life is no one’s command – it is what it is. We see, we compare, we critique, we like, sometimes we ignore. But then, when the finality of the process dawns upon us, one is left with a vacuum somewhere inside that says – wish there was more. . .

Very little details are available about C Arjun’s life and times. The article in Pankaj Raag’s book dedicated to this music director is almost completely based on his work, the films that he did, and the wonderful songs that he has composed. Other than that, very little about the person himself.

He was born on 1st Sep, 1933 in Sindh. His full name – Arjun Chandnani, which was later modified to be C Arjun, for the sake of brevity in film circles, and to avoid any confusion with the name of his mentor music director Bulo C Rani (full name Bulo Chandirani). After partition, his family moved to and settled in Baroda.

C Arjun’s father was musically inclined and was a singer. There is no information available about his training. In one place, there is anecdotal mention that C Arjun fondly remembers being present at the recording of a song by Noorjehaan in Lahore. This anecdotal nugget does not carry any other details. We read about his career initiation in early 1950s – appearing as assistant music director working with Bulo C Rani, in films like ‘Shikaar’ (1955), ‘Aabroo’ (1956), ‘Baadshah Salaamat’ (1956) and ‘Jeevan Saathi’ (1957).

In 1958 came the hit Sindhi film ‘Abana’. In this film, C Arjun shared the credits for music direction with Bulo C Rani, and not just as an assistant. Then in 1960, he got his first break as an independent music director in Hindi cinema with the film ‘Road No. 303’. His career remained very patchy throughout, despite some of the most wonderful songs and ghazals created by him. The songs gained popularity with the listening public, but that never really translated into more work for him from the producers in the industry. Following is the list of films he has composed for,

  • 1961 Main Aur Mera Bhai
  • 1964 Punarmilan
  • 1965 Ek Saal Pehle
  • 1966 Chale Hain Sasural
  • 1966 Sushila
  • 1967 Lambu In Hong Kong
  • 1970 Mangu Dada
  • 1971 Ustad Pedro
  • 1973 Guru Aur Chela
  • 1975 Jai Santoshi Mata
  • 1976 Raksha Bandhan
  • 1977 Aankh Ka Tara
  • 1977 Subah Zaroor Aayegi (possibly a re-release of Sushila from 1966)
  • 1978 Nawab Saheb
  • 1980 Karva Chauth
  • 1981 Kaanoon Aur Mujrim

Unreleased Films
Sant Valmiki
O Mere Jaan e Jigar
Gunaahon Ka Mandir

Besides these, he also has given music to films in Sindhi, Gujarati and Haryanvi. He also has composed music for non-film albums in Sindhi. He was actually in a recording studio, rehearsing with artists for the recording of a Sindhi non-film album release, when he suffered a cardiac arrest and passed away.

Today’s song is from his debut Hindi film ‘Road No 303’. The film is produced under the banner of Mahesh Pictures, Bombay, by Bheeku Bhai and Ratan Kumar. The film is directed by Dharam Kumar. The star cast is listed as Shobha Khote, Mehmood, Bhagwan, KN Singh, Tiwari, Sheelu, Helen, Altaf, Maqbool, Raju, Mirajkar, Ramlal, Fazlu, Majnu, Joshi, Kashi, S Kerawala, Master Nisar, Bakshi and others.

The film has six songs, equally shared between the songwriters Jaan Nisar Akhtar and Naqsh Lyallpuri. This particular song is sung by Asha Bhosle. Only the audio of this song is available, and I request our more knowledgeable readers to please add more information about this song, and the movie itself.

A wonderful creation in my opinion. Listen and enjoy.

Blog Day : 4008 Post No. : 15114

If someone pops up the name Jethalal, and asks for an identification, I am sure you will be puzzled to start with. Yes, surely a strange name, that many of the folks interested in Hindi films, will not be familiar with. This name belongs to the dear and popular actor of Hindi films – Sanjeev Kumar. His full real name was Harihar Jethalal Jariwala. Ah yes, now very familiar, right? 🙂

Remembering Sanjeev Kumar on the anniversary of his birth today. Had he been alive, he would have been 81 years old, having been born in the year 1938.

Sanjeev Kumar – an out and out product of stage and theatre, started his acting career at a very young age with IPTA (Indian People’s Theatre Association) and later continued with Indian National Theatre. He was born in Surat. The family moved to Bombay when he was young. After attending a training program at a local acting school, he joined the theatre while still in his late teens.

From the theatre, the progression to films was but natural for a performer as talented as he was. His first appearance was in the film ‘Hum Hindustani’ of 1960, in which he played a very small role. His first film as a hero was ‘Nishaan’ in 1965. For a few years his assignments were confined to C grade stunt and fantasy films. Then he 1968, he graduated into A grade cinema, with a sizeable role the 1968 film ‘Sunghursh’, alongside the likes of Dilip Kumar, Balraj Sahni, Iftekhar, Ulhas and Jayant. This year became a turning point in his career – ‘Raja Aur Runk’ became a runaway success, and ‘Anokhi Raat’ became the debut film of our blog. 🙂

The most powerful thing about Sanjeev Kumar’s performances has been that he never allowed himself to be typecast into any straitjacket. Whatever may have been the stage of his career, he willy nilly took such diverse variety of roles, regardless of the age and the temper of the character. When he was just 22, he played the role of a 60 year old in a stage play, father of 6 children. Positive or negative, he was simply concerned with a sincere portrayal. In ‘Anokhi Raat’ he plays the role of a dacoit. His comic roles are unforgettable – ‘Seeta Aur Geeta’, ‘Pati Patni Aur Who’, ‘Manchali’, ‘Angoor’, ‘Namkeen’, ‘Manoranjan’ . . . you name it. The diversity and the versatility of his performances is what brought the audiences into the cinema halls, just to see his roles. And for a surprising change, the viewing public never rejected him for his variety,

Today’s song is from the 1967 film ‘Gunehgaar’. From the era when he was still in the C grade stunt and crime thrillers, ‘Gunehgaar’ is the film in which he plays the role of an upright police inspector. His love interest is Kumkum, who later turns out to be the daughter of Sheikh Mukhtar, a wanted gangster. The film takes certain interesting and predictable turns, given the specifics of the relationships, and it ends with note of ‘All Is Well, That Ends Well’.

The film is produced under the banner of Simla Productions, and is directed by R Thakar. The cast of actors includes Sheikh Mukhtar, Sanjeev Kumar, Kumkum, Bhagwan, Madan Puri, Uma Dutt, Neelam, Nandini, Tuntun, Sulochana Chatterjee, Lakshmi Chhaya, Kundan, Dilip Dutt, and Tiwari.

The film has six songs, one of which – “Aankhen Pyaasi Lab Hain Pyaase” is already showcased here on our blog. The songwriting credits are shared equally between Akhtar Romani and Naqsh Lyallpuri. This song is from the pen of Naqsh Lyallpuri. Music direction is by Vedpal.

The song comes in at the start of the romantic relationship between Sanjeev Kumar and Kumkum – it is that initial getting to know each other type of song, performed partly on a beach and partly in a garden. Singing voices are Mahendra Kapoor and Usha Mangeshkar. A liltling and a very hummable song. Listen and enjoy.

laakhon hi chaand ho gaye
roshan meri nigaah mein

chale na jaana chhod ke
hamen khuda ke waaste
nai nai hain manzilen

dil mera ek saaz hai
dekha jo tum ne pyaar se
har phool muskura diya
mehki hui bahaar ne
sajde mein sar jhuka diya
nisar mein us husn ke
jis ne khuda bhula diya

Atul Song-A-Day 15K Song Milestone Celebrations – 3
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Founders of Infosys (who started their venture reportedly on a Rs 10K seed capital) may not have imagined where their efforts will lead to, one day. Apple company, which started their journey from a garage, may not have guessed how big they will grow one day.  Atul Ji when he single-handedly started this blog (with moral encouragement from friends like Raja Ji – as I understand & others who showed thumbs up at that time) may not have had an idea how far the journey will progress.

But here we – Atulites – are, looking at 15000 posts!!!!. No mean feat in the era of information & social media explosion. No success is without a reason. I would say that sheer commitment, passion, dedication of Atul Ji,  Sudhir ji, Arun Ji, Sadanand Ji and all the other contributors & innumerable visitors to the blog have helped to make it to where we are today. Acha lagata hai na?

This post utilises three punch words, all prompted by today’s song.  They are : ‘achha lagata hai’, ‘seedhe point pe aao na’  & ‘short me batalao na’.

I have covered ‘achha lagata hai’ in first para. I will now ‘come to the point’ in this Para  🙂 . Today’s song is from film ‘Aarakshan’ (2011). After ‘permission’ from seniors, to write on recent songs, I have chosen this one. This film makes its debut in ASAD, with this post.

The film is by Prakash Jha on the topic of reservation. I have seen this movie. It was not at all hard hitting as I expected. But I loved the music by Shankar Ehsaan Loy. The singers are Mohit Chauhan & Shreya Ghoshal. Lyrics are by Prasoon Joshi. I took to this song from the word Go. Fresh tune, feel young lyrics, joyously sung, lovingly enacted by Saif & Deepika, exciting orchestration are what appealed to me. ‘sun ke achha laga‘. I hope aap ko bhi achha lagega . I feel young all over again listening to this song 🙂 .

Today’s generation loves to keep it short – no patience for details/clarity, eh?  ‘LOL’, ‘ASAP’ ‘ILU’ and such short forms are the flavour of the youngsters. Hence, as for the last punch word ‘short me batalao na’, I end this post. 🙂

Song – Achha Lagta Hai (Aarakshan) (2011) Singer – Mohit Chauhan, Shreya Ghoshal, Lyrics – Prasoon Joshi, MD – Shankar Ehsaan Loy
Chorus

Lyrics (Based on Audio Version)

jhatak kar zulf jab tum
tauliye se baarishein azaad karti ho
achha lagta hai
hila kar honth jab bhi
haule haule guftagu ko saaz karti ho
achha lagta hai

oo oo oo
khushboo se behlaao na
seedhe point pe aao na
aaankh me aankhein daal ke keh do
khwaabon mein tehlaayo na
zara short mein
batlao na
seedhe point pe
aao na
seedhe point pe aao na. . .

la la laa laa
la la lal laa laa
la la laa laa
la la lal laa laa

alag ehsaas hota hai. . .
tumhaare paas hone ka
sarakti sarsarahat ki nadi mein reshmi lamhe
bheegone ka

o ho ho
zara sa mod kar gardan
jab apni hi adaa pe naaz karti ko
achha lagta hai

oo oo oo
lafzon se behlaao na
jhoothi moothi behkaao na
haathon ko haathon mein le ke
wo teen shabd tapkaao na
zara short mein
batlaao na
seedhe point pe
aao na
haan seedhe point pe aao na. . .

wo tere dhyaan ki khushboo
main sar tak odh leta hoon
bhatakti saans ko
teri gali mein gungunaane
chhod deta hoon

ho ho ho
tum apni khidkiyon ko khol kar
jab bhi naye aaghaaz karti ho
achha lagta hai

oo oo oo
gali gali gali gali gali
gali bhatkaao na
ghadi ghadi uljhaao na
senti ho
main jaan gai hoon
action bhi dikhlaao na
zara short mein
batlaao na
seedhe point pe
aao na
o seedhe point pe aao na. . .

achhaa. . .

o seedhe point pe
aao na. . .

Atul Song-A-Day 15K Song Milestone Celebrations – 1
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Hullo to Atuldom.

Let me wish all a very Happy New Year.

No, my post is not late by three and half months, it is just that India is a country which follows a calendar called Shak Samvat which the Hindus follow and Hijri which the Muslims follow. The new year by the Hijri calendar starts sometime in September but as far as the Hindu Calendar is concerned every region seems to have a different time of the year when the new year starts. And each region has a name for its New Year’s Day – Gudi Padva (Samsaar Padvo in Konkani), Ugadi, Poila Baishak (in East Indian States), Bighu (Bikhu in Uttarakhand), Bishuva Sankranti, Cheti Chand, Vishu or Chitra Vishu (in Kerala and Tamil Nadu), I am sure I am missing a few names in this list – what do I do, we have a vast country. But the common thread here is most of the above are in March – April of the Gregorian calendar (only in some parts new Year is during Diwali and southern part of Kerala has its new year at Onam). In Punjab it is Baishakhi, celebrated on the Mesha Sankraanti which occurs today for this year (generally it is 13th April). So now that explains why I wished Happy New Year.

14th April also happens to be the birth anniversary of the architect of the constitution of India, first law and justice minister and one of India’s founding fathers – Bharat Ratna Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar or Babasaheb Ambedkar as he is popularly known the world over.

He was a jurist, economist, politician and social reformer who inspired the Dalit Buddhist movement and campaigned against social discrimination towards the untouchables (Dalits), while also supporting the rights of women and labour. My tributes to him on his 128th birthday without spelling his biography here.

There is another event which takes up my day on 14th April every year. In addition to it being our New Year (what we call Vishu) it is the birthdate of a very special person. There is a departure from the usual this year in that the New Year is on the 15th but birthdates don’t change, do they?

So, 14th April is the birthdate of part-time Atulite, full-time Satulite. He is at that year of life when people hang up their boots (he is not hanging them yet) and try to find time for other pleasures and hobbies that took a back seat when they were working hard to make ends meet. This Satulite calls himself Peevesie’s Dad. He takes pleasure in the achievements of his family – his son, daughter, brothers-sisters, brothers & sisters -in-law; is a big bhakt of his parents and parents-in-law; and is generous in encouraging his wife and kids towards whatever they are good at and forever supportive.

Infact he tried his level best to teach me to ride a two-wheeler and didn’t actually give up on me, but I must say I was a bad student who took a whole decade to master riding a two-wheeler. And was rewarded with a two-wheeler to ease my work load as soon as I mastered it. 🙂

As a teenager and right upto the end of my student days I was a staunch hater of any kind of automation and computers in particular. I had a feeling that each computer would eat up the job opportunity of two or three deserving humans (people called me crazy, maybe I was). But it does seem to have replaced a lot of things in people’s lives. Now, today’s birthday boy tried to change my mindset vis-à-vis computers and persuaded me to enroll myself in one of the many match-box size training institutes that tutored commoners about Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc, in addition to teaching a crash course in Corel or PageMaker. He thought it will be a useful skill, I must admit he was not wrong. Then he initiated me into the World-Wide Web and emails, and I am 100% sure he is ruing the day I agreed to learn all that he tried to get me to learn. He finds me at the desktop most of the time these days, and zooming in and around Bangalore (never unnecessarily) on a two-wheeler. And am also sure (secretly) he must be thanking my nervousness of being behind the wheel of a four-wheeler 😉

Oh, there are so many things that I can thank him for – he has lived half his life trying to understand me and my ways and moods. We have common interests in most aspects of life, possibly a little too much of compatibility, according to our children. The song with this post is ideal to express everything that I need to tell him. And the best part about the song is that it is not a lovey-dovey young couple song but a song choreographed on a motley group of honeymoon tourists which has a middle aged couple (Shabana Azmi – Boman Irani), mismatched couple (Ameesha Patel – Karan Khanna), small- town couple (Kay Kay Menon – Raima Sen), seemingly perfect couple (Minisha Lamba – Abhay Deol); and two other couples (Sandhya Mridul – Vikram Chatwal & Dia Mirza – Ranvir Shorey) who are on honeymoon but not exactly in love. (Dia Mirza and Ranvir are not in this song but they are part of the tourists in the Honeymoon Travels bus.) It is from the 2007 Reema Kagti directed “Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd.” The music for this song is by Vishal- Shekhar and Javed Akhtar is the lyricist. Sunidhi Chauhan and Shekhar Ravjiani are the playback. The movie was produced by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani. I am in love with the choreographer of this song who has allowed the actors do their own thing which adds to the sweetness of the song.

Today’s song is a party song filmed aboard a cruise ship in Goa. I think the song is ideal for one more occasion – partying for the post number 15000 (FIFTEEN THOUSAND Phew!) of the blog. Let me try to list out all that we are celebrating in this series of celebratory posts – 10 complete years of the blog, 10 year challenge (on-going series); 1,15,40,016 hits (as I write this); 3919 days of existence (at the time of writing this) AND 11032 posts by our fearless leader (as Sudhir calls Atul ji) – we celebrated Atulji’s 10000 individual posts but missed complimenting him for tirelessly giving us 11000 posts. And the biggest point of celebration – post number 15000. In addition to celebrating the New Calendar in various parts of the country.

It has taken five years to get to 15k from 10k with numerous milestones and centuries strewn enroute.  The blog has bonded all of its regular followers, some of who are contributors in various avatars, in a bond like none other, a whole bunch of unrelated people who had never dreamt of being friends and don’t mind being called Atulites. For all this and more to come I thank ASAD the blog which is our collective addiction.

Also a very Happy Birthday to our Satulite.

Blog Day : 3898 Post No. : 14946

Little earlier in the day, Atul ji mentioned about the timing of posting of Holi songs, and I quote,

Different festivals remain topical for different duration of time. If we do not post a write up within this time then the post loses its relevance. In case of Holi, it is the first half of the day mostly when people are mostly in festive mood, though it spills over to the afternoon as well.

As I am rushing to complete this post, it is already around 6 pm. Yes, the festivities for the day have been over for some time. Mostly the people have cleaned up and many would have had their afternoon siestas too. Maybe the only remaining sign of the festivities from earlier part of the day are the splashes of colored water on walls and floors, which most people would address tomorrow morning. Ah yes, another lingering evidence of the celebration could be some people still in the hangover of the bhaang, maybe still sleeping it off, or if awake, not yet back from the cuckoo land. 🙂

This post is coming somewhat late in the day, but the attempt is cover an important aspect of the celebrations of today. The festival of Holi, for ages now, has been intimately associated with the story of Lord Krishna. And so, the celebration somehow does not seem to be complete without having one song about Holi in Biraj, or Brij, the native place where the child Krishna grew up. There abound many a legends and folk songs that tell of the Holi celebrations when Krishna was in Brij. And the same has also been carried over into the Hindi films. Many a songs of Holi in Hindi films revolve around the stories and pastimes of Krishna.

I present this lovely Holi song from the 1970 film ‘Mastaana’. The lyrics for this song have been sent in by dear Prakash ji.

Produced under the banner of Suchitra and directed by A Subbarao, the cast of actors in this film is Mehmood, Padmini, Vinod Khanna, Bharti, Rehman, Bobby, Shyama, Ramesh Dev, Manorama, Mukri, Leela Mishra, Kamal Kapoor, Shivraj, Paro, Narbada Shankar, Mumtaz Begum, Raj Kishore, Jankidas, Ravikant, Prabhat Kumar, Habeeb, and Guddi.

The song is written by Anand Bakshi and the music composition is by Laxmikant Pyaarelal. We have three singing voices in this song – Mohammed Rafi, Asha Bhosle and Mukesh. Interestingly, Asha ji’s voice is used as playback for three artists on screen – Padmini, the child actor Bobby who plays the role of child Krishna in this song, and Bharati. Rafi Sb’s voice is used for playback for Mehmood and Mukesh’s voice for Vinod Khanna. Another dear song that I was not aware that it has not yet been posted here.

Interesting part of the song – it uses four different folk dance forms. Initially it is the typical filmi style choreography that is used. Then later in the song, we see the four flavors, and the language of the chorus also gets modified accordingly. First we have the typical Brij rendition and folk dance. Then we have the Punjabi bhangra and Punjabi words in the chorus. This is followed by Gujarati dandia raas, with Gujarati words in the chorus. And then we have the Maharashtra folk dance steps, and Marathi words in the chorus. Very interestingly done. 🙂

Greetings for the festival yet once more before the day is out. Well, it is still daytime in other parts of the world. Khyati Ben is probably just in the process of waking up, and for her, the planning and cooking and the celebration is still to happen. 🙂  Krishna makes his appearance for the festivities and we all wish everyone, a very happy and colorful ambiance of this festival to last and continue through to the next year. And then, we shall have more songs to post. 🙂

Happy Holi.

Colorful greetings to all readers and friends. May this festival of colors, bring happiness and good health, to yourself, and to everyone you know. 🙂  May these colors multiply and spread good cheer across every day in the calendar.

Happy Holi to all.

On this blog, we are celebrating the eleventh iteration of this festival. Statistics is one thing – apart from that, the wonderful fact is that the songs of Holi in Hindi films, seem like a supply with no end. Of course yes, when the films and their directors continue to add more songs celebrating this festival every year.

I bring to your attention, this wonderfully fabulous song of the spirit of Holi, from a really very recent film – ‘Ye Jawaani Hai Deewaani’ from 2013. This film was one of the most successful films of that year, and I am sure you must be aware of it, even though it is possible that your tastes and preferences are rooted in the 1940s and 50s which is the gold standard for melody and music in Hindi films. However, that does not mean that music of the decades after the golden . . . – well it does deserve credit. It does catch your attention, and the music and songs still grow into your mind to become darling memories.

Although I have myself not been paying much attention and time to the music of the current years. But quite decidedly, along comes a film with a blast of music that forcefully captures your attention, and insists on becoming part of your list of favorites. Something quite of this sort happened with this 2013 film, for me. And it started very much with this song.

After a long time, I must say, that I have encountered a song of this festival, that simply takes your breath away. The spirit of celebration, and all the emotions that uniquely make this festival what it is – is not so totally and carefully represented every time. But surely, this song does it.

There is color, lots and lots of it.
There is water – it starts off with that.
There is cheer – for every person who is part of this song, and everyone else who may be listening and enjoying it.
There is music – yes of course.
There is dancing – goodness you must be kidding.
There is ‘bhaang’, and there is noise.
There is a large dipping pool – nay, a large dunking pool.
Oh yes, there is “छेड़ छाड़” – chhed chhaad, there is “ज़ोर ज़बरदस्ती” – zor zabardasti.
There are fair maidens running away to save themselves from being smothered with color and water.
And there are insistent and forceful young charmers who will not take ‘no’ for an answer. Or rather they do not even care what the answer is – they will force the color into your face and hair. They will chase you, and run you down, and cuddle you – and they will be more insistent, the more resistance one puts up.
There are drums.
There is singing – very loud, yes.
There is nonsense lyrics – like “लट्टू पड़ोसन की भाभी हो गई” – lattu padosan ki bhabhi ho gayi.
There are meaningful verses – “ज़ुल्मी ये हाजिर जवाबी हो गई. . .” – zulmi ye haazir jawaabi ho gai.
There is “नोक झोंक” – nok-jhonk – that is very verbal and very physical too.
There is humor, and there is suggestive propositioning – like “अरमानों में बेहिसाबी हो गई” – armaanon mein behisaabi ho gai.
And there is flights of fancy.
And there is uncharacteristic expressions of festivity from unexpected quarters
And there is a glimmer of surprised realizations.
The matters of heart, unexpressed, are just beneath the surface sheen.
And of course there is a shock of unexpected and amazing realizations – yes, this could surely be it.
There is joy of shared happinesses.
There is a loud cheer of good spirit.
And everything, each and every one of these ingredients put together into the mix to convince you – yayyy, it is Holi – get colored, and get wet, very wet.

Amazing, simply and truly amazing – after a long time, comes along a new sound that astonishes the mind with the honesty with which the true spirit of the festival is so sweetly captured. Needless to say it – but yes, I am quite truly floored.

I have not yet seen the complete film. I got introduced to the songs of this film over the past many months. Especially this Holi song was forcefully dumped into my notice just about a year ago, yes around the last iteration of this celebration. Enthused as I was, I could not make and present a post in time for the festival; now coming around to it after a wait of a full year. Even with this passage of time, the charm of this song has not diminished even one bit. I simply do not seem to be getting enough of this song. 🙂

The lyrics are written by Amitabh Bhattacharya and the music is by Preetam. Singing voices are of Vishal Dadlani and Shalmali Kholgade. On screen, the song is performed by Deepika Padukone, Ranbir Kapoor, Kalki Koechlin, Aditya Roy Kapoor and a ton of dancers. Deepika and Ranbir are so truly convincing in the complete free form enjoyment in this song. The movie makes its debut on our blog with this song.

Wishing a grand celebration of this festival today, to all friends and readers. Go out, get doused in colors, make up some fun lyrics – like “लट्टू पड़ोसन की भाभी हो गई” types, and sing it out at the top of the voice. It does not matter – it is Holi. Just down one glass of bhang and then blame it for everything. 😀 😀 😀

Happy Holi – – – celebrate.

Missing Films of 1960s – 97
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Goodness, what a lovely duet this one is. The film is ‘Sampooran Teerath Yatra’ from 1970. I have heard of this film earlier, but never did get an opportunity to listen to its songs. As I planned to bring this film on board in this series, I was checking out the songs of this film. And when I played this duet, I am verily bowled over by the sweetness of this composition.

The film is produced by Roopesh Pictures, Bombay. Now this is a very interesting co-incidence that I notice. The previous song in this series, “Ae Aasmaan Waale Is Waqt Tu Kahaan Hai”, is from the film ‘Ziarat Gahe Hind’. As discussed in that write up, that film is a story of pilgrimage to the Muslim places of worship. Today’s film is a story of pilgrimage to the Hindu places of worship. And guess what, both are produced by the same company – Roopesh Pictures, Bombay. And both released in the same year – 1970. Very, very interesting. 🙂

The film ‘Sampooran Teerath Yatra’ is directed by Dhirubhai Desai. The cast of actors includes Sushma, Ashish Kumar, Jeevan, Niranjan Sharma, Anand Tiwari, SK Shukla, Sahu Modak, Lata Arora, Zeba, Radha, Rajshri, Pal Sharma, Vishnu Pandey, Hari Ram, Dalpat, Master Kukku, Vidya, Ramlal, Deenanath, and Dalda.

Geet Kosh lists 5 songs for this film. All the songs are written by Madan. The music is composed by Pt Shivram. The singing voices are of Mahendra Kapoor and Hemlata. On screen, the song is performed by Ashish Kumar and Sushma.

It appears to be a wedding night song. The couple is meeting for the first time in their private chambers. And they sing this duet of promises of love that go across the cycles of birth and death, and even transcends the aeons. It is such a beautifully constructed song, and has been equally charmingly rendered by Mahendra Kapoor and Hemlata. Mahendra ji is at his softest best – yes, actually in some places, the voice of Hemlata overshadows his voice.

A lovely song, a must listen.

Blog Day : 3737 Post No. : 14688

This song from the film Suhaag  (1979) has been waiting in my drafts for a long time now. It is a group song based on Punjabi folk and a popular one at that.

It so happened that when I saw Peevesie’s Mom’s post yesterday on Rekha’s birthday, got an idea in the mind to do a post for Amitabh & Rekhas birthday together with a song of both of them.  There are a lot of songs featuring these two as a couple yet to be posted in the blog.

Somehow I  thought of the song “Naam Re. . . Sabse Bada Tera Naam, O Sheronwaali” from Suhaag, as a trio celebration of Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha’s birthdays plus Navratri.  But when I looked up the movie in the list, this song is already posted by Peevesie’s Mom in 2016. So that choice got ruled out.

Further yesterday was blue day for Navratri, there was a photo session of all ladies in the office, which is the norm all over nowadays in Mumbai offices at least. A colleague made a collage of those photos and put it on the status of the office ladies whatsapp group. It so happened she had mistakenly included one group photograph from another office.

When I pointed it out to her, she said “galti se ho gaya re. . .” . I asked my husband if there was a song with the word ‘galti‘ , he said there was no such song but there is a song with the word ‘bhool‘,  e.g. “Hum Se Bhool Ho Gayee Hum Ka Maafi Dai Do” (‘Ram Balram’, 1980). I remembered the song “Hum Se Ka Bhool Hui Jo Ye Sazaa Hum Ko Mili” (‘Janta Hawaldar’, 1979). But since the song from ‘Ram Balram’ has both Rekha & Amitabh I shared the link to that song in the group. I am appreciated for thinking of a song at the drop of a hat, since we have a Hindi film song for all moments and occasions. I have reliable help in this endeavor, what with my husband being a filmy buff, YouTube etc. 🙂

So back to the song – today is yellow day and in this song at least Parveen Babi can be seen in full yellow, sunny splendour. And it has both Rafi  & Asha Singing for Amitabh & Rekha.  Asha Bhosle in giving playback to Parveen Babi too and Shailendra Singh is doing the honours for Shashi Kapoor. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist for this song composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal. Amitabh Bachchan is in disguise in this song to hide his identity from friend Shashi Kapoor, which is uncovered at the end of the song by Shashi Kapoor. Overall a colourful and enjoyable song to suit a celebratory occasion.

This bhangra song is filmed in the old Blighty’s Hyde Park – London, if I am not mistaken.

pehle kyun aankh ladaayi
gori ki neend churaayi
kar ke badnaam kisi ko..oo
banata hai ab harjaayi
iss jatt yamle se darna
ab tu inkaar na karna
chup kar ke ban ja dulha
ye laathi dekh le varna
mat baandho zabardasti se..ea
mat baandho
o mat baandho zabardasti se
mere sar sehre ki ladiyaan
o ladiyaan
tumhen lag jaayengi hathkadiyaan..aan
ho..oo

sach bole duniyaa saari..ee
ye ishq buri beemari
tu ne mera dil todaa..aa
mar jaaun maar kataari
chal chhod isey deewani..ee
mat kar barbaad jawaani
laakhon hain is ke jaise
laakhon mein ek tu raani

saun rabb di main mar jaawaan
o saun rabb di
o saun rabb di main mar jaawaan
ladaaayi thhi ye to jhoothi
o jhoothi..ee
pehen le pyaar ki ye angoothi..ee
ho..oo
teri rabb ne banaa di jodi..ee
teri rabb ne
o teri rabb ne banaa di jodi..ee
teri rabb ne

o teri rabb ne banaa di jodi..ee
teri rabb ne
o teri rabb ne banaa di jodi..ee
teri rabb ne

There is always a freshness – a freshness as fresh as the cool early morning breeze. Pick up any film, and you will find this freshness wash all over you, as the music and the songs of that film play. Be it “Nadiya Kinaare Heraaye Aayi Kangna”, or “Naina Diwaane, Ik Nahin Maanen”, or “Thandi Hawaayen, Lehra Ke Aayen”, or “Ye Raat Ye Chandani Phir Kahaan”, or “Phaili Huyin Hain Sapnon Ki Baahen”, or “O Nigaahen Mastaana”, or “Mehfil Mein Aaye Wo Aaj Dheere Se”, or “Khoya Khoya Chaand”, or “Dil Ka Bhanwar Kare Pukaar”, or “Haule-Haule Jiya Dole”, or “O Mere Bairaagi Bhanwra”, or “Megha Chhaaye Aadhi Raat”, or “Sun Ree Pawan, Pawan Purvaiya”, or “Sandhyaa Jo Aaye Mann Ud Jaaye”. . . the list seems to be endless.

Other authors have written about this; this and the daily routine of his morning walk – creating the rhythm with snapping of his fingers, and humming the melody softly in his breaths. That is where most of his masterpieces have come from – plucked out of the cool and fresh morning breeze during his morning walks. One can almost feel as if he saw the peacock when he contemplated on “Mann Mor Hua Matwaala. . .”. And one can feel the whiff of cold breeze in “Thandi Hawa Ka Shor Hai. . .” as the stanza lines of “Chupke Se Miley Pyaase Pyaase. . .”. Maybe it was an encounter with a dreamy eyed young lady that brought to life “Yaad Aa Gayin Wo Nasheeli Nigaahen. . .”. Or that the “Khoya Khoya Chaand. . .” melody came about on a day when the moon was still visible in the early morning gray skies. Conjectures all, but surely, the music came with the early morning breeze.

One also wonders where the eternity of melancholy came to him – “Pyaar Ne Kitne Sapne Dekhe. . .”, “Dukhi Mann Mere. . .”, “Bharam Teri Wafaaon Ka. . .”, “Badi Sooni Sooni Hai. . .”, “Jaane Wo Kaise Log The. . .”, “Jaayen To Jaayen Kahaan. . .”, “Saathi Na Koi Manzil. . .”, “1 . .”, “Tum Mujhse Door Chale Jaana Na. . .” – and many more. Maybe so, that these compositions simply cannot be believed to exist outside of Sachin Da’s regime.

Celebrating the anniversary of his birth today (1st October), I present this completely forgotten and unknown piece of music that is a very short song that plays when the credits of the film ‘Tere Mere Sapne’ (1971) are rolling on the screen. Practically all the songs that Sachin Da has sung for the screen, have all been accounted for on our blog. But not this one.

The unmistakable folk flavor, that is Sachin Da’s favourite genre, is present predominantly in this music piece. As the prelude of this music plays on, one is struck by how the maestro has melded the music with the sounds of machinery and the hammering sound of the miner’s picks and axes. Really remarkable.

Fabulous Foot Tappers – 9
– – – – – – – – – – – – – –

O boy, after almost one year – well, nine months to be precise, the next episode of this series. I had posted the eighth song – “Dekhne Waale Dekh Karishma Yaaron Ka” on 7th November, last year. In the interim, many other things happened – but that is an old story by now. One thing happened was that inadvertently, a couple of songs that I was saving for this series, got posted otherwise, and so I had to wait for locating a few more to complete the series, i.e. reach a number of 10 at least. 😉

This song is from the 1959 film ‘Mr John’. This was a period when Johnny Walker was still commanding lead roles. In this film he is paired opposite to Shyama. Seems to be a romantic comedy. The rest of the star cast consists of Helen, Lalita Pawar, Iftikhar, Krishna Kumari, Mumtaz, Tuntun, Mohan Choti, Kamal Mohan, Sampson, Uma Dutt, Ravi, Champaklala, Rasheed, Daraaz, Wahid, Genius, Tiwari, Ram Lal, Anil, Singh, Jaani, Gaus, Tarun Kumar, Ajay Kumar, Ajeet, B Fazle Kareem, Mukhtar, and Pandit Baijnath. It seems as if the last dozen or so names are just henchmen in a gang. 🙂

The film is produced by Nigam for the banner of NK Productions, Bombay, and is directed by Inder. When I read the director’s name in the film listing, my mind is now wondering whether he could be IS Johar. The complete name, as you are aware, is Inder Sen Johar. Maybe a question to be investigated; being a comedy, there is a good possibility.

The film has seven songs, three of which are already posted here on our blog. This is the fourth one to come on board. All the songs are written by Jaan Nisaar Akhtar and the music is composed by N Dutta. This song is duet in the voice of Geeta Dutt and Mohammed Rafi.

I request other readers to please add information about this film and the picturization of this song. It appears to be a club dance song, which has a lead pair performing, supported by other dancers. It is possible that the song is performed by Helen and Johnny Walker, but that is just a guess. As I said, request for more information from other knowledgeable readers.

So, introducing another rollicking foot tapping number. Listen and enjoy.
