Bimal Roy, Satyajit Ray, Hrishikesh Mukherjee, V.Shantaram etc are some of the directors who enriched Hindi film industry with their offerings. They not only contributed significantly to the industry, but they also helped spread the fame of Indian movie industry beyond its shores.

“Faraar” is a movie title that we come across at ten years gap beginning from 1955 onwards till 1975. We have had “Faraar”(1955), “Faraar”(1965) as well as “Faraar”(1975). All these movies had different star cast and were produced by different production houses. Songs from all these movies figure in the blog.

# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 4 # Suresh Rajvanshi -1

The journey through the HFGK is getting more excited and thrilling day by day, though so far I have been able to glance through only the few preliminary years of this decade 1971-1980. And I am realizing that apart from ‘Bhoole Bisre Geet’ we do also have some ‘Bhoole Bisre Artists’, like the singer of this song that is being presented today.

Songs to Tickle Your Memory – 14

There are many recipes to make memorable songs. In my experience, one of them is – a B/C grade stunt film (the more obscure and forgotten, the better), an unfamiliar name of the lyricist, the voice of Rafi Sb, and the music of one of the lesser known music directors. And voila, you have a fabulous and memorable song. The song itself may be obscure, unfamiliar and possibly unheard for a long time. But once you hear it – it is all a ‘wow’.

OK, so there are many a piano songs in Hindi films, and we have seen many an actor play the piano on screen. In this song, I see Pran playing the piano. This is the first time I have seen this happen on screen. Other friends and readers may comment on this, but for me, this is the first time.

Mohammed Rafi – The Incomparable – 6

Film ‘Benazir’ 1964 has eleven songs – too many by SDB standards and the 60’s fashion. The theme of a muslim social may have something to do with it. It could also be the reason that this time SDB paired with Shakeel Badayuni. Now that I have checked, SDB worked with Shakeel Badayuni in ‘Kaise Kahoon’ (1964) also. After ‘Pyaasa’ (1957), SD Burman seems to have worked with all major lyrics writers, from Majrooh, Hasrat, Kaifi Azmi, all the way up to Anand Bakshi in the 1970s, in films like ‘Aradhana’ (1969) and ‘Ishq Par Zor Nahin’ (1970).

MISSING GEMS FROM THE GOLDEN 50s…. Song No….5
————————————————————————————
Today’s song is from the 1955 film ‘Faraar’.
We have already discussed the happenings in Hindi film industry in 1955, in the previous episode. Name of this film had not featured anywhere, simply because it was neither a famous film nor a very successful film. Its music too was nothing to write home about. Even in such a film, we find a gem or a song special for other reasons. I selected this film song for few reasons.

Glancing through the comments from the past couple of days, I got a shock to see the RIP comment posted by Avinash ji. Goodness no, but Krishna Kalle is no more. I quickly searched for more news online, but am dismayed to see almost nil coverage of this news. A couple of news sites carried brief items of just a small paragraph or two. She passed away last Sunday, 15th March, after a brief but serious illness. The last rites were performed on Monday. She was 74.

Past few days have been very slow on the blog. Concerns have been expressed in the mails being exchanged not only between the regular team members, but also enquiries are coming from other readers and friends. Some expressions include statements saying that this blog has become such an integral part of their individual routine of the day. And on days when we have no posts – dot balls, or even maiden overs, as Atul ji likes to refer to such days, folks have expressed that something seems to be lacking in the day. And personally, I wholeheartedly agree with this sentiment.
