This article is written by Pradeep Raghunathan, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a new contributor to this blog.
This is my first attempt at reviewing a song, so please bear with me :). I have been glued to the blog off late and am trying hard to catch up with all the posts on the blog. “Nikaah” (1982) was a movie which was produced and directed by B R Chopra. The movie had Raj Babbar, Salma Agha, Deepak Parashar, Asrani etc in it. Those were the days when Indians regarded “phoren” stuff and people as objects of great curiosity value, even if “phoren” only meant neighbours. Thus Pakistani and Bangladeshi artists were welcomed with open arms in Hindi movies. Runa Laila, Salma Agha, Nazia Hasan were some of the artists who benefitted as a result.

Saat rang mein khel rahi hai

On the occasion of Holi today, which is the fourth Holi for this blog, here is a Holi song from “Aakhir Kyon” (1985). The time from 1980s onwards was when my period of blackout from Hindi movies had begun, so it comes as no surprise that I am not much familiar with the music of those days. Personally I came across this Holi song just now and I found it quite a hummable and danceable song.

“Umrao Jaan” (1981) is a treasure of some of the finest ghazals that have been created in Hindi movies. Most of these songs are sung by Asha Bhonsle in the movie, but there are songs in other voices too in this movie.

This blog is about OLD Hindi movie songs. So this blog is expected to attract visitors of a particular age group. What is the age profile of majority of visitors to this blog ? Popular impression, based on hunch, would be that most visitors, regulars and contributors of this blog are middle aged people, in their 40s or more. Let me hasten to clarify though that we all feel quite young by heart though. I have repeated it often that mentally I do not feel one day older than 12 years of age. 🙂 And same is the case with other regulars of the blog too.

“Rajput” (1982) was produced by Musheer-Riaz and it was directed by Vijay Anand. The movie had Rajesh Khanna, Hema Malini and Dharmendra, all of them towards the fag end of their careers, in lead roles.

Ye kya jagah hai doston

Renowned Urdu poet Akhlaq Mohammad Khan, who wrote under the pen name ‘Shahryar’ and immortalized himself as the lyricist of ‘Umrao Jaan’, passed away in Aligarh on Monday (13th february 2012) after battling lung cancer. He was 75 and received the Jnanpith Award for 2008.

On the occasion of Kaifi Azmi’s birthday (19th january), we are discussing a few songs written by Kaifi Azmi.
Here is a song from “Arth” (1982). This song, which is picturised as a get together song, is sung by Jagjeet Singh. It is picturised on Raj Kiran, Shabana Azmi, Smita Patil, Kulbhushan Kharbanda etc. Kaifi Azmi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Kuldeep Singh Chitra Singh and Jagjit Singh.

“Bemisaal” (1982) is a movie which was produced by Debesh Ghosh and directed by Hrishikesh Mukherji. The movie was a big budget movie which spared no expenses and had Amitabh Bachchan in the lead role.
